Same for other things too. I actually don’t like ppl who are always nice. I’ve found with experience that basically ppl who are nice like that tend to not tell the truth when something is unpleasant. Or when they actually don’t like something. One friend I had for years literally lied to me the entire time about hating her nickname. And then out of the blue she told me that she was bullied literally 10 years ago and that person used that nickname. And asked me to stop using it. I did-but it was really tough because it was ingrained in me. And it was a form of endearment I had used for years. And I can’t explain how unpleasant it was to accidentally say the nickname and then to get the stares from everyone. And also how all my memories with my friend were now full of me wondering if all that time when I was being caring if I was hurting her unintentionally. It just ruined all my memories a bit. And it just makes you wonder what else she’s lied about. So…anyways, long story short, I don’t look for nice personality ppl. I look for honest ppl instead.

I don't see that as a flaw of the movie. The movie is supposed to send a message with a romance story. Also what you're saying has a bit of a flaw. The guy can only see a person's appearance based on their personality. We are seeing everything thru his eyes. If he saw an "ugly" person while hypnotized we wouldn't know if he/she was actually unattractive or not. So if there was an actual ugly person in front of him but that person had a bad personality, the protagonist would still see the person as ugly.....inside and out.

The funniest scene in Shallow Hal is when Jill starts begging Hal to go to dinner with him after rejecting him early in the movie. Women are so predictable and simple. Except when it comes to genuinely intelligent women, you can generally tell exactly how women are going to behave when it comes to dating. They'll always gravitate toward the assertive guy who fits every standard the media claims is in vogue and who is desired by other women, even if he's a complete buffoon. Shallow Hal, as much as it is a comedy, is also a social critique of how easily manipulated most people are by cultural influences. It was a hilarious movie when it came out and is still hilarious today.

I remember watching this in a full theatre and when Hal turned around to talk to Cadence and the look of disbelief that crossed his face (I knew something impactful was going to happen) When she said, It's me Cadence and the camera panned up to see Pediatric Burn Unit an almost entire row of people sitting next to me "gasped" aloud. The camera then panned down to reveal Cadence 'soutward appearance and I then heard many people start sniffling... For a silly little Jack Black Rom-Com movie that scene certainly tugged at your heart strings.

It is a curse, what if you love someoen who, if you could see them, would very obviously have a health issue or some problem that they don't notice. Body positivity and all that but obesity is a very serious health concern. And not being able to see your partner for how they really look is dangerous. What if they lose sleep and their eyes are baggy and their skin is pale and they have severe bumps or are malnourished? you'd never see any of that. they'd always just look "pretty" Plus it doesn't make you less shallow, Hal is still only going for someone based on their looks. he just has filters on

@@kendivedmakarig215 fair enough. So if there's anything wrong with her healthwise that he'dnormally view as "ugly" like skin lesions or marks or turning purple or such, he wont ever see it. He's also living in a delusional state where he physically sees everything as different than other people. So when he describes how his gfs look to other people or what he likes about how "beautiful" they are to them...he'll list off a bunch of traits they dont actually have. His 200+ unkempt short haired gf will be told by him how much he loves her long beautiful hair...cause hes into long hair. How much he likes how she keeps herself in good shape which would come across as mockery if she knows she's obese and so on. I'm not trying to just be cheeky. I truly think you haven't considered the implications of this affliction. And in the end he's STILL dating women for their looks. Really all that's happened is that he doesnt have to worry about looking past their appearance as hes being decieved by his own eyes. And he's just too stupid yet to notice this. Women he wouldn't normally be attracted to he's now being made to see as physically attactive. Boy wouldn't it suck if they ever knew that had he not been forced to see them as models he would not have given them the time of day. True love indeed. How can it be true love if hes forced to live a lie? Bottom line is that physical appearance matters to people. Try watching "dating in the dark" sometime. Men and women alike find themselves REALLY liking someone....till the lights come on and you can see them. I'm sure even you have people who'd make great partners and would love to be with you. You just arent into them physically. And that is okay. You shouldn't be forced to see every "nice guy" as a model just cause he's nice...see?

I once knew a guy who was a little too late to acknowledge his poor eye sight. He only discovered the problem because he didn't see a pretty large obstacle on the road, however he changed the lane for no reason and so he randomly didn't die that day in a horrible collision. And so he started wearing contact lenses, but then he silently stopped using them altogether. This was years before I met him. He told me this story at some point and admitted that he was depressed for years, because he saw for the first time how ugly people were, and how filthy everything was. I am still thinking about this to this day, but it's not about him and his eye sight experience. I'm wondering what kind of truth lies there that I'm missing out by not being able to see it properly. Would I also be disappointed and depressed if I could see it? And are such feelings childish and immature, or just as inevitable as we decide to start wearing "contact lenses"?

While looks aren't everything, the people that say looks don't matter when picking a partner are either full of shit, or asexual. If men are picky, they are called shallow. If women are not picky, they are called sluts. Both are toxic judgement. There's nothing wrong with wanting to bone people you're attracted to. Likewise, there's nothing wrong with not wanting to bone anyone you find unattractive. Honesty and consent is what matters. Also, if you're out of shape and want to get with people that are in shape, I guarantee going to the gym and eating better will help with that.

I really like this movie but the biggest flaw in the logic of the premise is that Hal sees the different women as beautiful (or ugly in the case of the gold digging nurse) before he even meets them, let alone gets to know there character. I like 2000's - early 2010's movies like this that just show you a whole different perspective and teach you a lesson at the same. I've always thought to myself and noticed that as people we tend to dismiss someone's personality, habits, behaviour and everything that may be attractive about them on the inside when we look at them from the surface level. Like for example, if a girl were to giggle a certain way or have a certain corky or weird mannerism about them. If they were perfect physically attractive we would attribute that as being cute and unique but we'd rarely acknowledge those certain unique traits with someone with average or commonly undesirable appearances.

@@kawaiixtc I think they showed the song in a pretty good way. I like when some movies play music during certain times of the film, and then afterwards; will often think of those songs, with those scenes replaying, when listening to them. My similar vibes song and scene to this; probably in Celeste And Jessie Forever, when "Baby by Donnie and Joe Emerson" was playing, and the scene was at a backyard wedding, with the shot starting off slow mo. It's another great movie, imo, and with a stellar soundtrack. It turned me on to "Rescue Song (RAC Remix) - Mr. Little Jeans" too. Lol I like music, and am grateful for productions that choose things that suit the scene or, by themselves, are good to listen to 🤷 I used to spend a large amount of time searching for music, before SoundCloud and Spotify, on music blogs.
