Wonder Boy, a series of excellent games closely linked to SEGA, although in reality they were the productions of a small independent company called Westone. This episode will tell the story of the small start up company and their ever changing series; Wonder Boy / Monster World.

As a Brazilian I'm so happy that you talked about Turma da Monica version. Actually was my first contact with the Wonder Boy series. That's why I love this channel so much. All the care about the content being made. Thank you very much! And TecToy was a amazing company here in Brazil. Some people may know Tectoy because they release genesis for decades, but they were a really dedicated company on the 16bit era. They completely translated a lot of Sega games for Portuguese. Games like Fantasy Star for example. FS has a immense language barrier if you don't know English, but they completely translated. There's so many great stories about Tectoy, like they foolish Capcom with the Master System version of Street fighter or of course the Zeebo.

6:15 suddenly I get where have I seen this game before! in Brazil, we had an amazing Sega distributor called Tec Toy among other amazing things, they did a new skin of this game (like Nintendo switched Oki Doki character for Mario characters) for a popular comic book character called Mônica at the time, we simply couldn't believe a brazilian character had her own game!

Re-uploaded so I have to comment again. The Mas System still selling in Brazil. I got my around 2003 that came with Wonder Boy (and others 73 games) and was one my favorite. I rediscovered the series thanks to dragon's trap remake and now the Wonder Boy games are one of my favorites franchises and so glad that it's alive again. This is an amazing video as always!!

Excellent work, here. Very well researched and full of interesting details that I, even as a hardcore fan, hadn't known or thought much about. It makes me happy to see Wonder Boy have such a renaissance, after being ignored and underrated for many years. Even the older games get their due in a way they never did in the past.

This series meant a lot to me growing up. Only knew of it because my family bought my cousin's Master System after he got a Genesis, and he happened to Wonder Boy 1 and 3 for that system. Once we eventually got a Genesis, I made sure to snatch up Monster Boy in Monster World. That game really perfected the original formula, and I still regularly think of some of the musical tracks from it. Thanks for making this.

I had The Dragon’s Trap as a kid for the Master System. Was happy to rediscover it for the Switch many years later, and finish what kid me couldn’t. And then a year after that, Monster Boy came out and was even better! Great video as always guys. Some of the best stuff on KZfaq 👌

Thanks so much! Luckily I have a little more than 2k subs these days ;) But don't worry I'm already very satisfied with the amount of subs I have. I only upload a new video once every 3 months and sometimes they are catered towards a niche audience like this video for example, So it's only natural that it took me a longer time to pass the 100k.

@@strafefox whoops typo, yeah it's good you have more than THAT sheesh. So long as you're motivated and enabled to make more videos yourself and others enjoy, I guess that's all that matters. But I still thibk there have to be more people than this who'd appreciate these vids given the popularity of similar channels such as Ahoy. But I guess It's easy to forget just how enormous 200K is in the wake of these "Big" 1 Mil plus gaming channels. You've done so well for yourself regardless.

Another triumph of a video from this channel. Love to see it. The original wonderboy game was something I played on master system. I played in the early nineties as a little kid and while the game itself was ok it was no super Mario bros and SMB was what I wanted to play so the wonderboy games I had (also had wonderboy in monster world) didn’t have a fair chance with me. I appreciate the info about Westone’s business relationship with Hudson and the explanation why adventure island and wonderboy are so similar. I actually liked the adventure island games more than the wonderboy games 🥲 But having watched this video I have a lot more respect for Weatone and their wonderboy/monster world games.

Very well documented video! Wonder Boy is now one of my favourite game series. Since I'm lived in Southern Asia where NES bootlegs had been commonly sold back then, Adventure Island is what got me into Wonder Boy. However it wasn't until 2018 that I start to become a fan because of interesting business pattern Westone had gone throught and small yet dedicated fanbase to share sheer amount of appreciations to it despite its then-dormant status in gaming scene. Any Adventure Island, metroidvania and even Shantae fans should look this up!

The Wonderboy titles in the Mega Drive will always have a special place in my heart. I managed to play them as a kid, but my English wasn't any good at the time (I'm from Argentina). Later when I was on my 20s I was able to fully enjoy them, and to this day I consider them some of the best games on that console. Funny enough, I'm quite fond of the original 4 titles of Adventure Island as well, with III being my favorite Famicom game ever. Master Higgins, Asha or Shion are some of my favorite videogame protagonists 😁
