46 years old today and have been training for 30 years myself I am an expert in all fields to do with health and fitness. You took the words right out of my mouth. The new generation has forgotten everything's the last generation learned to do with health and fitness. A lot of the stupid things people are talking about today we're already solved with tests and studies 30 years ago. But because the new generation has no education on the subject the market takes advantages of them and sells them the same crap that we know better than to take. The human body is the most complex piece of machinery known to humans. Walking into the gym without being an expert in what we do is like building your own space shuttle to go to Pluto with a first grade education. I've met two people in my life that have anywhere near the education I do in the industry. They have KZfaq now and I did the hard way. I make my living from the industry and I am $100 an hour and I will only train people that are not bodybuilders and that are serious and usually have problems that other experts supposedly had not been able to figure out. There's so much misinformation out there that a newbie would not be able to tell the s*** from shinola. The only reason I can is because I have three almost four degrees on the subjects. You want to know something the only reason people listen to me is cuz I'm the biggest guy they know. 30 lb of muscle made a difference between they listen to me not The Three degrees I have that are masters degrees. That's how stupid people are. They will listen to the person they want to look like more than a person that has five doctorates and usually that person got their by using piles of drugs and completely lying about how they got their physique. I ran into it thousands of times. I am the only person I know that is one a state show that was truly natural. Well Ronnie Coleman did do. He was able to get as big as I was natural when I actually used the gear. When he got on gear it was over with and he dominated for a decade. Talk about genetics right. What you brought up really bothers me because I spent my life trying to fix that problem and there's two or three channels on KZfaq use to save them decades of wasted efforts and save their lives potentially. But honestly it's only about three the rest don't know what they're talking about and it's all bro science not real information. Glad you're still around as long as me cuz I know bodybuilders are dropping us flies there's been in the business for 30 years like we have. Only thing good about a long life is proving that I knew what I'm talking about because knowledge is power and now knowledge is life. We have the information now to completely stop all the stupid mistakes that are done in health and fitness. Unfortunately we cannot stop to people lying about how they got there. Take care of yourself I hope you're in there another 30 years brother. Stay safe and healthy

I used to think this man. There are so many you tube videos, fitness mags and social media channels that surely there is no excuse for incorrect form? Then lockdown happened and I tried to learn a spanish and play bass guitar.... long story short, I suck. Lol. Made me think just because these things come so easily for me does not mean it will for some people who go gym. I figured everything out for myself and after a few years of training comleted in my first show and come 2nd. I was the only person there who was competing for the 1st time yet I blew people off the stage who had been competing years. However, no matter how much I practice on that damn bass I just can't see any improvement. Its got to be the same for most of these people. No matter how many videos and clear intructions they follow they just can't seem to preform a simple deadlift or lat pulldown ect.

@@Perun.Tha.Unvaxxd Agree with you there pal..Most of the young guys at the Gym I go to now, Don't look they have ever lifted. I was shocked when two mates told me they started 2 years ago! I notive they rest wayyyyy too long between sets (looking at their phones and chatting, when they should be focusing on their next set)..They also seem to do 20 sets of benches?? Why? I'm very glad to hear this. I have that shoulder pain he mentioned from doing that same shoulder exercise with the narrow grip, and I used the easy curl bar, and would haul the weight up to my chin. I did that one through my 20s. I have times I can't even lift my hand up over my head at all. Very sharp pain halts the movement. I can use it more now because I've modified my movement to what I perceived as a natural movement. It seems I'm on the right path. I think I know who he's alluding to. I watched a video last week where a body builder used three different shoulder excercises. But, all three excercises, excercise the shoulder the same way. But, the worst excercise of the three was the behind the neck, or head, if you will, excercise. Impingement. That word alone sounds like pain. Great if you're into self annihilation lol. What a needed wake up call to all well meaning weightlifters.

Yes. I am seeing more and more kids do behind the neck presses and lat pulldowns again. I did those in my youth and attribute them somewhat to my shoulder pain. It's been many many years since I have seen gym members do them but now they are being done again. I also see trainers having clients do exercises and getting the name of the body part being worked wrong. Basics, people, basic information.

Great and relevant pitch on training misconceptions! Viewers should also be aware that poor squat form and bouncing with weight across the shoulders also compresses the gelatinous substance called nucleus pulposus found in each disk. This material cushions the spinal column and under heavy load can bulge, be painful and often require surgery.

@@steroidsR4losers all steroids do is decrease the time frame of how long you need to lift to get results, so if someone natural trained for 10 years correctly, a person on gear could get the body in 5, and it allows someone to put on more weight while being lean, they aren't fake muscles so I don't even know why you say that, and if it was as easy as you say everybody would look like arnold, either way both people work out hard, gear or not you still have to diet you still have to go to the gym, you still have to do cardio, you still can't eat cookies everyday

I stopped shoulder pressing movements early on in my journey because I always felt the load in my front delt and never my side delts which is what a lot of books and websites still tell people to do. I switched to cable lateral raises but only after a high rep dumbbell lateral raise warmup to get the lactic acid softening up the tough muscle fibres. It’s been the only way to feel the DOMs the next day for me.

Hello, Jerry Brainum! I'm glad to see, and hear that you are on KZfaq. I used to read your articles, and always followed your writing in the 1990s of Iron Man Magazine! Great, and truly helpful advice, that's also real, and practical. Thumbs up. I subscribed a couple of months ago, and I'm happy I did. As for shoulder injuries, with me it is more about a strange sort of dysfunction - not much about pain; I don't have much pain in my shoulders any more. If I'm careful. I've got what is called by a doctor, subluxation, especially in my right shoulder. If I tense my arms I don't feel this clunk, very slight dislocating feeling; most evident in my right shoulder. I perform mostly side raises with dumbbells, or at the gym with cable; and bent over laterals 2 work sets. However, it is mostly side raises for up to 3 sets, one set for warm -up. Anyhow, I still do presses, with dumbbells by training with light to moderate weight. As for thighs, and calves, dumbbells squats, or lunges work for me; and one leg calf raises 1 warm-up set, 2 works sets. What a coincidence that you also perform single leg heel raise, too. When I started exercising in the end of the nineteen seventies, 1980s, then back again from the early 1990s we did not actually exercise the midsection with a weight. Actually no weight at all, except for one's body weight; and that's could be another reason why today's bodybuilders have big, wide waistline.

Once again Jerry, you're spot on, we've had so many conversations about this over the years. You'd think with all the information out there today at ones fingertips people would know better. As you so rightly say it doesn't mean that if you've won a or numerous contests, that you're knowledgeable about training in fact I wouldn't advocate what I see most of these guys do, I watch clips of their training and biomechanically and physiologically, they're way off, just like some of the exercises you describe. I wouldn't trust them to train any of my clients. I recently saw a clip of a former multi Mr Olympia advocating the Smith machine. There is nothing good about the Smith Machine, it's completely linear and has no natural curve when pressing or doing squats, it's disatorous for your joints. The only ecercises that a Smith machine could be good for is seated calf raises or pull ups, in the abscence of a seated calf machine or pull up bar. The Smith machine is a waste of floor space. Furthermore I've never understood the benifit of barbell or dumbell front raises or close grip upright rows with a barbell or staight bar on a low pulley. The Gironda upright row as you describe is fine andxeven better with two dumbells, as you're not locked into a fixed position. Reg used to do a one dumbell or single handle low cable combination upright row / lateral raise with his free hand resting on the back of a bench at about eighty degrees and standing leaning slightly forward in a push up type position so the rear delts are also engaged. It's one of my favorite shoulder exercises as there's no impingement on the joint. One also needs to be conscious of lateral raises or flyes. People use these exercises to build size but they don't replace compound movements I.E. Presses which are multi joint exercises. There is no joint support on lateral raises and flyes only connective tissue. If you consider that there is a distance of 10 inches between your hand to your elbow, you then need to multiply the amount of weight you're using in lateral raises or flyes by x 10 and that would equate to the amount of weight your placing on the connective tissue. The safest way to perform lateral raises is with your palms forward which causes no impingement and notcallow the hands to raise higher than the shoulders and with flyes to never allow the hand to go lower than or if using cables behind the sudes of the body. Jerry you don't just know about supplements or nutrition, inbwhich there's no one more knowledgeable than you., but you know about physiology too. As Reg said you are the most knowledgeable person he ever met re supplemtation and nutrition. I have learnt so much from you and feel privileged to have worked alongside you for many years and have you as a dear friend. You're the best.👍

I did all those wrong exercises for shoulder and it teared... And I was supervised at the time by a personal trainer (another glorified mistake, Most of them are only interested on your money). I'm recovering from a surgery on my shoulder. I did about 10 surgeries before. I never have a more annoying, slow and painful recovering than this. Hear this man. Just hear him. I wish I have someone to tell me what he is saying here... FOR FREE.

With regards to the frontal raises, it has to be distinguished between empty and full can reises. I saw Franco Columbu suggesting the first, but nowadays there is consensus that empty can raises cause shoulder impingement. On the other side, full can is useful to target, among other, the supraspinatus. Extrarotation exercises are also needed for other muscles of the rotatory cuff.

One thing I would like to add on shoulder training is this. Many were taught to do dumbbells' side laterals with arms slightly dumbbells bent and to act as if you are pouring a picture of water aiming thoubs to ground as you raise the dumbells. WRONG! They should be done with no bend in the arm and NOT making the motion of pouring a picture of water as this adds impingement and does absolutely zero. Keeping elbows stiff also allows the better transfer of the weight load lifted to go more directly to the lateral deltoid muscle by not bending the elbow. I Agree on all you said on the pressing behind the neck and front delt dumbell raises though. Funny that that exercise seemed to be a favorite by Arnold though. It amazes me the nonsensiocal bio mechanical form many pros use when training but I was always of the school learn the PROPER way and do it that way only. Now did my first bodybuilding show in 92 and still not one major injury from training not one! I have competed and trained natural in all that time too. 5 5 200 LBS 17 AND half inch arms wide shoulders small waist like my father. As this is all genetic and that is another topic that is hotly debated but it is true to a large degree. I even called former IFBB pro Lee Priest on his comment on "shaping exercises" I told him sorry there is no such thing as a shaping exercise as your muscles are the shape they are since birth. You can make a muscle bigger, smaller even, but not change it's shape. He got mad and started with what have I done etc and I said look it is factually right what I said. Then I got the what do you look like and sent him my pics now he sees what I look like and NOT talking out of my ass. I AM 5 FT 5 200 LBS SOLID MUSCLE natural almost 18 inch arms and never took a dam drug to achieve it in my life. So much of bodybuilding is inherited from the parents A BIG PORTION!

I enjoy doing multiple different exercises for the same muscle group. Yes they do the same thing , but It keeps the workout from getting boring and doing the same thing over and over which will keep you in the gym longer which will get you more gains...jist my two cents. Great video. Lots of great points.

Great guy love his attitude and personality . Regan I’ve been training over 40 yrs . I train with high intensity , very heavy with very strict form without the negatives, and low volume .I do drop sets instead . Now 57 I going more of the Giant type sets high volume higher Reps , I do 3 drop sets each exercise for a total of 8 exercises per body part . Of course I use max weight in each set . The pumps are wow but I don’t get deep sore . Recovery is terrible as I’m exhausted using such light weights high Reps with drop sets . Anyway, I will wait and see if I can can add muscle mass with this type of training . Wishing you the best in the Arnold. Are you actually gaining muscle size from the Giant sets with drop sets and higher reps ?

I do upright rows with a grip as wide as my arms get using cables or dumbbells with the cables or bench angle face down at about a 60 degree angle. At about a 60 degree angle face down until my hands are under my fully extended upper arms. I then do a couple of sets of laterals at the same angle. I never lift the weights above my shoulder joints. I made this up. but it seems to really pump my medial delts. It seems to work my shoulders well without the weird close-grip angle, and if I need more trap work, I do shrugs. My traps get a lot of work from simply lifting the weights, so rarely do I do shrugs. Doing benches too high only chest also hurt my shoulders, so I bench a little further down my chest and I can feel it in the chest muscles instead of hurting my rotator cuffs.I'm an older guy, and I don't want any joint damage.I got arthritis in my knees when I was sitting at a desk at work and walking on concrete and tile too much. so I use wraps to keep my knees warm and help hold in the synovial fluid, and I try to use very good form. I had a several year layoff, and this is when my knees got bad.

I always worked abs every day, and did a good 400 and upward for total reps of abs. Before a contest, I’d move that up to as many as 1,000 reps a day. This did two things. First it trained the abdominals and second it helped shed some of the unwanted pounds before a bodybuilding contest. As depicted previously on this site, a common approach by ‘old school’ bodybuilders was to increase the number of repetitions per workout prior to a contest. Zane, it seems, was no exception. At its longest, these ab sessions took Zane roughly thirty minutes to complete. It’s perhaps no surprise that the results spoke for themselves. What then were the exercises of choice? In true Zen form, Zane stuck to the pure fundamentals, a point he observed in the training of ‘Zabo’ Koszewski. ‘Zabo’ as many iron heads will remember, was famed for having the best abdominals in Venice, which at the time, was a highly coveted title! To maintain his supremacy, Zabo would would do 500 Roman-chair situps in the morning and 500 leg raises in the afternoon. After observing Zabo in training, Zane decided to do likewise. Thus ‘The Chemist’ as he became known focused on doing a few ab exercises but doing them in a marathon style. For the upper abdominals, Zane emulated Zabo by performing crunches and/or Roman-chair situps ad nauseam. These were interspersed with leg raises or hanging knee-ups and seated twists for his obliques.

Cardio should never be done prior to weight-training unless it's used as a short, 5 to 10 minute warm-up, which itself is not necessary.
