Tony, thanks again for another brilliant video. Love your improv at about 4:30 mins. What metronome do you use buddy? Ive seen it feature in a lot of your videos. Also fascinating were your insights into being a "pro" musician. I know just what you mean about those "jam" sessions, you never know just what you're letting yourself in for when you take that piano stool. Your videos are always very clear and informative and I find them very useful in my quest to be a better player. Thankyou.

I know it's a different world now but I got lots of work that led to more opportunities from playing at jam sessions.

Join the Army band. Google it. They still use jazz trios and quartets and sometimes larger jazz ensembles.

You just made my month with your harsh cynical yet brutally honest comments about Jam sessions. Thank God it's not just me. I been wondering or trying to pinpoint WHY the last year-and-a-half my attitude has been so sour towards something I used to love doing. But I think all the reasons you gave hit the nail Square on the head. It's a sad painfully frustrating process to see people that have talent but NO ability (willingness?) to listen to the other musicians. And I won't waste your space here with angry rants about egotistical freudian-shredder looking guitar players and insecure drummers who play excessively loud Buddy Rich-solos on every single measure.

Bar four on this lead sheet is an odd way to play this head. The second note is usually just a quarter note A without the Bb.
@TonyWinston5 жыл бұрын
Barry O that's funny, I think I recorded it that way and when I was editing I saw that I left that note out and spliced it in. Bad move. Thanks for pointing that out
@barryo51585 жыл бұрын
Funny. I have seen that version in some fake books but I'm not sure who recorded it that way or if it is just a mistake. I just listened to a version by Monk and he played it as a quarter note.
@barryo51585 жыл бұрын
Great videos by you, BTW. Thanks.

@@barryo5158 I prefer the version without the Bb note too , miles and monk also played it like this on recordings i heard. The realbook has the added Bb note . I wonder how people on jams play that bar.

Unfortunately you've summed up jam sessions perfectly, especially rock jam sessions. They're the worst - Rhythm guitar's too loud so the lead guitarist turns up to make himself heard and so and son on 'til it's literally aural torture. Naturally some headbangers think this is nirvana (state not the band...) At least at jazz jams they have other instruments than too loud electric guitars, which is definitely a huge plus...
