Straight onto the motorway! Am I crazy - what the hell is that noise - Land Rover Series 3 Project

To find my brothers video on this project, click the link below to go to the Dizzy Cap Car Show Land Rover video:
This videos see the results of around 2 years of work, the first test drive of this series 3 land rover that has undergone a full mechanical restoration. I take it straight onto the motorway and hammer the new engine to bed in the piston rings. I find the top speed of this Land Rover (legally) and discover that there is a rather nasty noise, likely coming from the rear differential.

Unpleasant gearbox noises are not uncommon- quite often detected under very light throttle on the overrun. Sometimes it's just backlash but that sounds quite "bearingy", one thing that is a common fault is for the gearbox rear mainshaft bearing housing to spin in the casing. The front prop shaft is fitted backwards, the sliding joint should be closer to the diff. After a decade of series ownership and many motorway miles, my advice is to keep the speed down 50-55mph is a comfortable speed with overdrive and will give your vehicle a longer life between overhaul. Start driving fast and you just break stuff- they are very vintage technology wise and that gearbox was designed in the 1920's..

Thabks for the comment steamwally, I don't suppose it will ever go this fast again. I did this run just to bed the new piston rings in really. If it were mine I certainly wouldn't be making a habit of it. That's amazing to think it was designed nearly 100 years ago! I cant imagine for a econd that the owner will be driving it very fast either. The noise turned out to be the rear diff. It was a really nasty noise :) Tha ks for the comment, it's a great compliment getting views and expecially comments from a big channel such as yourself. Many thanks again

Yes it was pretty awesome. I am a Volkswagen beetle guy but recently I came across a one owner 109 landRover here in Kenya and have already asked for the owners if they could sell it to me as it's been parked since 1991 and just waiting for their good response now hopefully I get to own it soonest.😊

Just a comment on your wipers. They are wrong as they should both come down together. You have your wiper mechanism upside down. You have to remove the dash and turn one of the gears upside down. Sorry for bad news.😭😭😭😭😭
@lozl
@lozl Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment :) you're only the second person to spot it. Someone with a very keen eye spotted it when I was assembling the dash (big delay on the videos being released). I have now swapped it over, you're right though..... it was a pain in the arse.

Wow, i was scared to death watching you driving along at 65 in the rain! I max out at 50 in my Series 2a, and that's its happy spot. To answer your question about you and your brother's channels- i thoroughly enjoy them both; yours for the rich technical content, and your brothers' for the sheer joy of sharing messing about with these classic gems. But the magic happens when you two get together and video the event- great. Thanks for having us along. 😆👍

Thats great to hear, you're too kind 😊 I want to do more filming with him. I think the brother banta probably makes the videos easier to watch. Hopefully he might come help out when I have the rolling road up and running (first test is happening this week). I really need to start sorting that footage and make another video..... Yeah that first test drive was pretty scary,... really scary! But it went pretty well after all. I'm sure you saw but the gearing is quite long in this one with the Ashcroft high ratio transfer case upgrade. I don't suppose it will be doing 65mph much after this run. Thanks again for the comment its great getting comments like this.

I do like the sound of the petrol land rover but too expensive to run as a everyday use so i have the 200tdi in mine just wish it sounded like the petrol

@@lozl It's very good, I've put in discovery diffs as well. It was originally a petrol but I put in a 21/4 diesel but the mpg was terrible so then put in a 2L turbo from a montego that was a good conversion but after a few years it needed a rebore but parts were very expensive so i got a 200 tdi, rebuilt that and that's been in for over 15 years now

@lozl
@lozl Жыл бұрын
@@alexmccowan2298 I can't remember going up a steep hill specifically but I did need to drop it down to third on several occasions perhaps for hills. It can easily sustain speed and a think gentle inclines are no problem. But the thing I would say is that if/when you do have to change down, 3rd gear feels quite sensible, the revs are appropriate and it all felt quite normal. Worth noting that this is a fresh engine I guess.

Keep thrashing it and you wont be driving it for long. Redline is 4350 which is about 55. I think it is foolish to drive a series Landy on the motorway.
@lozl
@lozl Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message Harry and thanks for your concern. It has the high ratio transfer case fitted taking all gears up in speed by 31% so that 55 is raised all the way up to 72mph. It was well within that max rpm.

Weird how my old 2.25 petrol used to do 65, I think your rev calculations are a bit out. I also recall being driven at 70 in a six cylinder station wagon, it drove lovely.
