I've been reloading for years, almost exclusively to COAL, and never completely pleased with my groups. I will now religiously load to CBTO to eliminate the variable jump to lands. CBTO is altogether essential for each bullet type and I will be noting the CBTO in my loading manuals for each bullet I load going forward. Thanks for the evidence and advice!

I just started reloading and this is EXACTLY what i was thinking when reading posts on loads. With different bullet shapes ...coal doesn't tell me anything. I noticed that rounds that were within a certain range of measurement from the lands gave the me best groups. I started seating my bullets based on distance from mouth to ogive (from an empty case to seated bullet ogive).... WRONG ! I was close but you just clarified what i actually need to do. Base to ogive of a seated bullet ! Thanks.

Couldn’t agree more. When I first started out I was unaware of CBTO and now it’s all I go by as it’s the most important measurement. As you say, only use COAL for magazine length, it your loading rounds into a mag. Otherwise, forget about it. One of the most important tools when reloading is a ogive gauge for each different calibre being loaded.

Hi Sam. As you no doubt know, the Hornady device measures from the case shoulder to the bullet ogive; Which if done correctly guarantees that you will never be able to jam the bullet on the lands. But for consistency of jump distance (and correct measurement), shouldn’t one be measuring from the cartridge base to the bullet ogive? As this is the measurement that results when seating the bullet on the press, because the press is pushing from the base of the case (which results in consistent seating depth, but probably not the same jump distance one is looking for as measured by the Hornady device). Whilst I use the Hornady device myself, this dilemma has always played on my mind and I was wondering what your thoughts would be on this? Or to put it another way. The Hornady device doesn’t seem to allow for variation in case lengths. So if a long case is used, it will give a different result, than if a short case were used.

My problem with this concept is that I get very different CBTO@lands readings for different bullets. If you take your Stoney Point gauge and do CBTO readings for all 8 bullets, do they come out the same? When I've tried a test like that I get numbers all over the place. I've always assumed a test like you did with CBTO @ 2.040" would still have a wide range of distances to the lands. I assumed that the diameter of my bullet comparator insert does not match my rifling perfectly and causes varying readings depending on the ogive shape. I feel like I'm definitely missing something because a lot of people rely on CBTO a lot more than I do.

And now that I type that out I see you have already covered it in another comment. I'd love to see numbers in your gun with the 8 bullets you have on hand! Seems like I'm not the only one with this confusion.

You are not the only one that's confused with this, this is making my brain hurt. I always thought that once I had set the seating die to a particular measurement for a specific bullet then all of the same bullets would be seated the same. What the heck am I missing ? I just cant work this out.
@neilharris4462
@neilharris4462 6 жыл бұрын
Johnny's Reloading Bench I think it mostly has to do with the diameter that Hornady cuts in their comparators. I've seen where other people have the same issue and have switched to other brands. I believe Sinclair makes steel ones rather than the aluminium that may be cut to more of a true diameter for getting closer to the actual ogive/bearing surface line but will still work in the Hornady tool. Just as long as we all understand that it's just a reference number and treat each bullet separately the numbers don't really matter too much though.

Hello Sam. Great video's and I've picked up some good tips from you vids on reloading; really good stuff your doing. My question is when looking for accuracy, have you noticed or do you find with loading all those different bullets for your 260 or some of the other guns you shoot that the jump to the lands seem to be about the same for other bullets when loading up different brands of bullets that have the same shape/design. Something like the 142 SMK compared to the 140 Berger?
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but I've also come to the conclusion that the barrel/ machining is more a limiting factor than the particular bullet. I've had too many barrels shoot a broad range of bullets very well, all seated to the same CBTO, to think otherwise. I don't have a lot of patience for tinkering with seating depths.

A question Sam; the CBTO with a modified cartridge and a range of 140gr bullets from different maker varies almost .020”. Loaded rounds would then be variable, ogive to lands, by that .020” and could affect accuracy also. Has this been your experience also?

How would you load a Tikka 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser that when checked with an oal gauge on a Sierra 120 gr. HPBT literally has the bullet fall out of the case when touching the lands? Much appreciate your video's and information!
@Jacob-si1xx
@Jacob-si1xx 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Decoelec! The 6.5x55 SM is a different design. It has a "build in" long bullet jump. Ex the max coal for 140gr match bullet would be as much as 82.00mm. When loading for the 6.5x55 SM aim for optimum concentricity and full bullet/neck guidance. With a 140gr match bullet this would be close to 79.00mm... This is a very typical design for old military cartridges to avoid the bullet to jam in a dirty gun. The same goes for the conical shape of the cartridge... I have shot several 6.5x55SM's with excellent results. My best 300m, 5 shot group to this date was printed with a Tikka Varmint and 143gr ELD-X... measured 10mm - just followed the above mentioned recipe All the best J.

Thinking it could also be the amount of different pressure applied when seating the bullet in case. So if I push the handle down hard on one round an not all the way on another round. Even when seating primers I try an use same amount of pressure to seat primer all evenly.
@whiskeybravo11
@whiskeybravo11 5 жыл бұрын
Pressure on primers doesn't matter. Depth on primers does. You should always seat bullets the same depth or stroke witch should be too of the stroke obviously. The difference in pressure has to do with case mouth size and friction on the bullet surface as well as case mouth. Clean brass and bullets with lite lube will go along way. But to get everything consistent to the desired tension you will need to turn necks or use a neck bushing die. Quality brass makes for more consistency in this case as well. If you have big differences in handle pressure using all the same components something needs to change in the process.

Lance V I’d like to know the same thing. I’ve got 5 different bullets now and have different numbers for all 5. Also I think the Sinclair comparator bites into the bullet since it is stainless steel giving me different numbers also.
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 6 жыл бұрын
It happens. I think a lot of it is the angle of the chamber/throat cut causes a different "feel" with different bullets, depending on their ogive. The best way to get a precise reading is to use the bullet you want to shoot for your barrel measurement. Be sure you're getting multiple readings with the same bullet, though. It does take some repetition to learn how to get consistent readings.
@lancev7186
@lancev7186 6 жыл бұрын
odd766 Right or wrong, what I am viewing is the initial measurement I made was with the Barnes LRX. I will use that measurement as a reference for throat wear. Now that I am loading multiple bullets, I’m using the measurement from each individual bullet that I load. Theoretically the ogive should not change bullet to bullet so not sure what the deal is. I agree on the comparator digging in. I think just getting used to the feel of the device so each measurement is consistent.
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 6 жыл бұрын
The insert is slightly beveled, so you could get different readings if you change the pressure with the anvils. If you're getting a "bite" into the bullet's jacket, you're pushing on it way too hard.
@alpha6five528
@alpha6five528 6 жыл бұрын
Lance V I was having kinda the same issue. Every time I seated a bullet it was different measurements. If this helps , Try this : when you start to seat the bullet in the case , only seat about a 1/4 of the the way down into the case, then turn the bullet about a1/4 or a 1/3 , seat down another 1/4 and then spin the bullet again. Do this until seated is complete. I usually do about 3 or 4 turns in my process. I have noticed it gets my seating depth within about 0.001 to my desired measurements. I hope this helps as well .

When changing CBTO, would this not affect internal pressure, thereby affecting velocity ?
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision 6 жыл бұрын
K BikeRider Yes and no. Pressure is needed to create velocity, but you can increase pressure without a gain in velocity. In my experience, the quickest way to do this is to seat the bullet into the lands. For instance, if you’re .010” off the lands with no pressure signs, seating the bullet .010” further out (contacting the lands), can give you pressure signs without an increase in velocity.

Some of the Lee presses have been known to flex, also make sure you are firmly mounted and your bench is rock solid stable. I also have a Lee press that has some sentimental value to me, I just use it as a permanent decapping and neck expander press as these operations require little to no real force. I'm no expert but that's my .02.

Measuring base to ogive effectiveness. Is that measurement effective? If i understand the measurement, it is to help understand the amount of each bullet as it sits inside the case? To help determine the pressure changes from the different lengths inside the case? The seating depth (ogive measurement in relation to the lands) has a bigger impact than the pressure change from .002 .003 length difference when measuring bullet measurement base to ogive??
@PanhandlePrecision
@PanhandlePrecision Жыл бұрын
I don’t pay any attention to BTO measurements of the bullet itself. I think measuring the overall bearing surface, and understanding the effect it has on pressure is more important. CBTO is cartridge base to ogive, and is a better measurement to use than OAL using the tip of the bullet.

Or is it the cheap Hornady Calibers and Hornady Comparator body?
@carcrazyification

Unfortunately, CBTO is somewhat irrelevant if you are using the factory Pmags with the Ruger Precision rifle. You can’t actually load to the factory COAL with 6.5 CM or the noses won’t reliably clear the mag wall. In that case the hard limit is the the mag limited COAL, in that case 2.810 to 2.815 depending on how comfortable you are with the nose on/at the mag wall.
