TRANSCRIPT: criminologyweb...
In this video, I explain strain and anomie theory by sociologist Robert K. Merton. Merton developed a deviance typology based on the idea that strain and anomie (lawlessness or normlessness) elicit responses in people, one of which may be to commit crime. Strain / anomie theory is Robert K. Merton’s best known contribution to sociology and criminology. The American Dream, its opportunities and lack thereof are central to the theory. I discuss the meaning and definition of anomie and strain theory as well as real life examples.

I have a criminology exam this Monday and this was the only thing I could not get straight in my head, the textbook we use does not explain things well or clear and this explanation finally actually told me what his main objective and what he believed anomie was in his perspective. so thank you!

Being in the Security Asset Protection business, I can say that these theoretical studies do aid in analysis, providing predictive counter measures to theft, sabotage, and treachery. These concepts should be revisited regularly because they are broad and complex; keeping them in mind keeps us from getting short sighted, it's not about over analysis, its about avoiding anecdote based decisions for derived peer reviewed consensus to direct our efforts, efforts that often collide with US 4th Amendment rights in particular, and civil rights in general. Thank you, Professor.

Thank you! Taking an accelerated criminology course and reading Durkheim & Merton's writing is so time-consuming for me. This really helped condense their ideas and fill in the parts that confused me!

This is nothing but blaming society for the aberrant behavior of those who hold sociopathic ideals. The American Dream has no contractual obligation, no etched in stone prerequisites. The two kids an a three bedroom house standard was derived long after the American Dream Came into common usage. The American Dream appeared in the late 1700's and was well understood to have its foundation in a frontier mindset which called for a rugged individualism. There was no specified 2.3 children and no 3 bedroom house in the suburbs. Those were all machinations that came out of the Progressive era. No Conservative would ever make such a patently ludicrous promise regarding outcomes far beyond any mortal's capacity. History, reveals it was promises the Left couldn't keep. Why? First, because government shouldn't be determining what rugged individualists want. Second, Because the curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design. Third, We shall not grow wiser before we learn that much that we have already done in the name of improving society was very foolish, and will manifest the polar opposite results of what the central planner claimed as intent.
