Thank you for having such a thorough review of this bass. I fell in love with it just from the appearance. My name is Cliff and I'm from The West Indies. Caribbean music is my thing, though I Play other genres. The many things I like about this bass, including the fact that it's light, it's headless, and it's short. Your review has convinced me highly of all other things I find very interesting about it. I'm 67 years old. I've been playing for about 40 years or so - and would love something lighter, something different. I believe the Strawberg is the way to go, Thanks again. You're a wonderful demonstration.

I love the body shape and love that it can be played on the left thigh! I love the fact that it is really light which saves your back on long practice sessions. I love that it comes in a 4 and a 5-string as i am currently shopping for a 5-string for a more melodic approach to bass playing. Strandberg makes awesome instruments, i might pay them a visit when i visit Germany. Thank you Julia!

Very interesting. I follow Sarah Longfield who has several Boden guitars, both 6s & 7s and she loves them. Initially because of the lightness, but she had the same response to the fanned frets. She is quite small and has small hands so the angle of the frets makes it much easier for her. The basses sound great, and it looked as if the action was nice. I used to play a Rickenbacker 4001S so one of these would be only about half the weight! Very nice playing Julia.

I'd go for the Original 5-string. I'm usually much more into vintage-style instruments, but I also appreciate progressive approaches like this very much! And this somehow strangely reminds me of the vintage Guild B-302! 😄 Recently I checked a Dingwall, and it felt really nice and smooth! I'd wish Strandberg took it up a notch and also put 3 pickups inside, the Dingwall pickup switching is really nice and versatile!

They make great instruments. Two things that make me wonder... Some of their own signature artists don't use the Strandberg design neck. Also, they have the pickups at strange angles. They aren't angled in between the angles of the bridge saddles and the frets. Maybe they are angled this way due to experimenting with tone relative to position, but I've never seen angles like these, relative to the bridge and fret angles. I don't doubt that they are really nice, and sound very good. I think all the body shapes in the video are nice looking, and would all feel very good n my large hands. Is this the company that closed its original shop and has all their instruments in Asian facilities? I don't recall. If so, then it's good to hear that they are still making higher quality basses.

I've been looking at the bass for a while and watched several reviews. I managed to snag #1 of the 5 Gold 10th Anniversary Editions 4 string. Having played it for several months, every time I pick up my 1960 Fender Jazz it feels so "old school". The neck shaping, body shape & weight make SUCH a huge difference to the feel and playability. Not played it at a gig yet, so no idea about audience reaction..... May need to wait a while as on lock down

As a guitar player with fan fret experience looking at basses the "traditional" fingering for some chord shapes are less effective depending on where on the neck you're playing. I have yet to try playing chords on a bass but I wouldn't be surprised if that minor 7th voicing you were struggling with would be easier to play entirely inverted as in index on G, middle on D, and ring on E.

And if anyone wonder, Strandberg in Swedish means Beach-Mountain. And the little military verse about the place Boden: "Det finns en plats på jorden där solen aldrig ler, den platsen heter Boden. I couldn't tell from the video but I wondered whether the strings were clamped at the "head" end, because if they're double ball ended like the Steinbergers, you'd be limited in choice to the manufacturer's range, but if they're clamped, you could use any. That aside, really good and engaging demo, Julia. If you like 'em light, you wouldn't be too keen on my current favourite bass: a Peavey 5 string Grind bass - it's a real neck-bender, weight wise. I might just have to hollow out the back with a router. 😱

I know I’m super late to this conversation but they both sound great. The strandberg I prefer simply due to the neck. It’s unbelievably comfortable and I really think I can’t buy a bass without that neck in my life. The Ibanez is still incredibly light and sounds great of course, but the strandberg is the first time it’s felt genuinely comfortable to play for hours on a bass, with zero stress on my wrist despite previous carpal tunnel issues. That’s worth the price hike for me, even if it isn’t for others. If you get the chance, try that neck shape out, it’s really something else.

Great demo. Thanks so much. Great concept and sound. However for an Indonesian built instrument the pricepoint of any Boden bass is just ridiculous and leaves me puzzled.

Love your review, but the darkglass preamp has no high knob, its low, low mids and high mids.

I've had a hard time getting one of these (at a normal price) for this past year. I guess I'm too lazy to order one and just wait for them to be in stock to get one. I finally got my hands on one and it comes Friday. I'm a .strandberg* nutcase and this will be my 4th instrument from them.

So no neck dive? How does the weight compare with the Hofner violin bass? The Hofner has neck dive depending on where you hang the body. The Epiphone Viola has terrible neck dive.
