The beast from the east stranded me for 12 hours, 1st of March 2018 I found myself negotiating a fully loaded HGV in the worst conditions I have witnessed on UK roads when the beast from the east met storm Emma.
I spend 6 hours on Millbrook Road in Southampton after the Redbridge Flyover was closed to traffic and then another 6 hours sat on the A31 where a major incident was declared by the emergency services who also requested assistance from the military to help free the hundreds of cars and HGV's that had been trapped for over 10 hours.

NEW JOB ALERT!!! Yes, I have an exciting new job collecting salvage cars using a multi-car transporter, really interesting if you're a petrolhead and into your cars also. Check out the first video of many using the link ------> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sJifa7xoyJjSmYE.html

I was taught when leaving the yard do not expect to be home as scheduled FYI traffic,weather,accidents,breakdowns and anything what can go wrong will go wrong so be prepared if you don't like it change career because this is the nature of transportation everyday is different and when you think you know everything stop driving for a living because your dangerous you should remember it's always learning and you will never know everything and after twenty years driving from Dublin to Moscow from Helsinki to Istanbul ,from driving from the yard to my house I never had the same trip twice every time it was different and still lots to learn ps hope you enjoy your career as I loved it everyday

I got stuck in an 18t. Rigid after it took me 4 hours to get from a drop in Poole to Bournemouth airport that afternoon, then stuck at the airport that night. Didn’t even bother trying to get to Weymouth after I’d done the Poole drop. Left at 6am next morning and followed behind a snowplough gritter all the way out, through Hurn and back along the A31 M27 then went up the M3 towards London. Got back to Cambs later that morning with most of the load still on board. They shut down A34 A35 A31 M27 and M3 during that snow and ice storm and got the army out to help clear the roads.

I remember this well, recoverd an artic from Portsmouth to chandlers ford.. 8 an half hours later i finally got back to fareham. Everybody doing 5 mph on the motorway didn't help, you go slow and the snow can settle. I carried on down in lane 2/3 in deep snow to keep grip not a problem,

I can't believe they directed traffic off the A34 onto the A343 at Wash common and then directed towards Andover rather than through Newbury/Basingstoke. That A343 is abysmal for large vehicles (e.g buses that I drive), and in snow, the hills out of Highclere and Hurstbourne would be extremely risky. great videos and keep safe.

It really does annoy me how many wankers have no clue how to drive in the snow and half the time have no real reason to be on the road. They could work from home or get their hair done another day. I got stuck behind some knob the other day crawling around a roundabout at 5mph and then got stuck trying to get up the hill and blocked the road and got me stuck behind him. Luckily i actually have snow chains and put them on and managed to turn around and go back and got to work another way.

Given how little it took to bring the low loader ahead of you to a halt, it makes it so clear why the Norwegian authorities stop all the trucks arriving without winter tyres. Given the UK doesn't get extreme snow often, I reckon even just swapping 1 tyre on each side of the drive axle to a proper winter tyre that can grip in the cold and snow might have been enough to at least get most trucks far enough to get to somewhere safe to stop rather than the middle of the road. The other thing that stops them here is the Eastern European trucks that are 4x2s, most Norwegian artics are a 6x2 with lifting tag axle, so if it's bad weather, they simply lift the tag axle (knowing the roads authorities will overlook the temporary axle overload) which gets them further before they need chains.

I had a Southampton to Stansted drive to do Friday, so Thursday night I went to check the car out and see driving conditions. By 2100 Soton city centre was as clear as I’d ever seen it, but then I made a poor choice and pulled onto Millbrook Road West, which was completely clear until half a mile further when I guess I got the end of what you were stuck in, took me half an hour to go 200m before I could do a U turn and go back! So annoying! Up the M3 was absolutely fine and empty by Friday afternoon, M25 was slushy and freezing rain but not bad.

I've had several people take the piss out of me for having an emergency bag in the car during the winter months. I tend to keep packet soups, noodles and those sorts of things with me, along with a flask of boiled water and a sleeping bag. If I'm going any distance I add a gas stove to that and a large container of water. It's come in handy a couple of times; got stuck heading back from Holyhead a couple of years ago, so I camped for the night in the car...norra problem. :)

@KevTee
@KevTee 6 жыл бұрын
Hi mate, I started at 06:00 and finished at 04:30, I didn't exceed my driving time and took regular breaks/sleep to ensure I wasn't tired. I exceeded maximum working time of 15 hours and 9 hours rest in a 24 hour period from start of shift but this was unavoidable. There are allowances for exceeding drivers hours and extreme weather conditions are one of them, otherwise you would be more of a hindrance blocking access routes for emergency services and snow ploughs.

Lol i remember this, my parents were flying in so I was doing the whole m4 m5 and upwards from cardiff to manchester, went super early in the morning and theyre like oh yeh itll be snowing be careful, as the day went on the speed kept on shrinking and it went from be careful to do not drive at all, theres me hiding behind a lorry cab without a trailer as he clears the way for me, in summer tyres but in a 4x4 and we are doing like 30mph, so fairly quick with how bad it was, and a mini is like neh even though the cab infront and the 4x4 is drifting at times my little mini can just jump the snow bank, he indicated and i put my hazards on basically trying to say dont, he goes for it, does a 360 at 30mph and then somehow recovers and gets back behind me with his hand in there air, completely defeated like yup, i done fckd up XD

KevTee This is true. Multi drop can suck sometimes. I will try my hand at class 1 soon & see if I’m any good. Burdens are a good company bit of burden mind you hahaha. Well done & thanks for the videos.

The roads from where I live to Okanagan or Kamloops for work includes the Coquihalla Highway. I don't drive it in winter because the EEPmobile has no snow tyres and that's illegal on the Coquihalla in winter. One time on the overnight Greyhound from Kamloops I was awakened at 3 am and the bus was casually weaving between big-rig trucks just stopped for the night in the deep snow in all three lanes at random on the long hill down to the snow sheds, and the bus stopped, driver got out with a big parcel and handed a big parcel into the cab of one of the big-rig trucks, got back in the bus and drove on, at 3 am. Eat your heart out FedEx.

This video made me think to look for truck videos and I found a snow one on the stretch of Coquihalla Highway hill to Coquihalla Summit at the Great Bear snow shed where the overnight Greyhound from Kamloops gave truck driver a parcel at 3 am in my prior comment. Apparently, truck drivers call it "the smasher" east of the snow shed at 1:25 on in kzfaq.info/get/bejne/lb1yeqSa0bLQl40.html

Hate to say it Kev, but for me this was your best video yet!!! Great choice of music, and great footage! I know a few people have commented already, and please don't take my comment the wrong way, but reading other vloggers comments.... you can 'get away with' poor video, but, you cannot get away with poor audio. If you want the channel to really grow, that really has to be addressed mate. Congratulations on the Volvo FH...she looks virtually new !!! A bit different to that rented 'pile of poo' you were driving before eh? Looking forward to the up and coming video's !! Stay safe mate.

Thanks for the feedback Paul, I know the audio is holding the channel back and it's something I'm working on sorting as soon as I can, I just wish it was an easy fix without spending a shed load more money 😔 Yes the new truck is a whole world away from what I'm use to driving 👌 take it easy mate.

I missed most of the fun stuff as I was in loughborough trying to do my Class 1 but they abandoned my test on Thursday :( due to snow on the reversing bay rebooked now for the 12th lets hope the show does one as I have had to contend with that during every outdoor part of my HGV training ...... Class 2 DEC 11-14 we had snow that week it was showing on my CPC and I got the beast during my training for class 1 :D

I like your new ride. Volvo (hp ?), is that your permanent tractor unit or will you swap around a bit ?. The driving you did was great. I think, had there been less road users, you'd have probably kept going, seemed very confident. Still, 'variety is the spice of life'. Great video. Loved the ending, great snowman. ;)
@KevTee
@KevTee 6 жыл бұрын
Cheers Chris, yes the Volvo is my permanent unit I've been allocated, I'll have to get back to on the hp though. Your right, my only issue was the other traffic, bit you can't expect everyone to have the same level of confidence in the snow.
@chrisb718
@chrisb718 6 жыл бұрын
Very true regards the 'confidence in snow' comment you made. Its nice that the Volvo is your permanent tractor, you can deck it out inside just how you want it. Takes time, I know. Good luck with your new path. I'll keep watching.

I was out getting photos in that what a night...are is the opener for this video some video of the news if so how did you get permission ?
@KevTee

Yeah it was a pretty terrible conditions that night. There is the odd news clip in there but they are used under the fair use policy such as a limited transformative purpose, which you don't need permission for.
