Birds and other wild animals operate on instinct to procreate. Not training and or morality. While many systems and behavior among species are common, there are exceptions and this nest seems to demonstrate that. The male bird isn't a bad bird doing anything wrong and Iris isn't a victim; it is after all the same instinct to abandon the eggs if the right conditions aren't met. This nest provides an example of the crossover pattern possibilities that can occur under certain conditions, for instance, there are nests that have two males mating and providing for a single female and the nest. Exceptions are natures way of insuring the production of offspring continues if conditions change. Its also our instinct to project human attributes and characteristics on animals and nature.

Louis has another mate with a nest somewhere. He is now preventing Iris from having fertile eggs. He will not help her incubate when she does lay. He chases other males away. Time for Iris to move on.

She's been with him since Stanley didn't come back from migration in 2016, so Iris is as much the problem as Louis. I don't know if Louis' wife down the river is back and they have set up housekeeping for the year. But Louis is a lousy bum. Stanley was so good, why Iris selected Louis is beyond me.

@@DoubleDogDare54 I remember Stanley. Louis could be the reason Stanley did not come back. Louis probably prevented Stanley's return. This would give Iris no choice because she is 'attached' to this nest...so she accepts this male.

@@earthtwin2409 Stanley didn't return from migration that year. I'm pretty sure something happened to Stanley during migration and Louis had nothing to do with it. The upshot was Iris had multiple suitors from which to pick a new mate. She chose Louis the Louse. I believe that year Iris laid a huge clutch - four or five eggs - and none of them hatched. So she and Louis spent the summer knocking around getting to know each other. Fun times for Louis. I believe since then raised one chick to fledging, mostly because Louis wasn't providing for Iris and a couple of clutches just starved to death. Ol' Lou picked up with Star after Star was widowed and I believe they have fledged clutches the last couple of years. But now Iris lays eggs and doesn't even bother to incubate. I think she knows the routine, sticks around until fall, then leaves on migration.

Since Louis has been the resident at this nest in 2016 Iris has only seen one chick fledge. ONE CHICK. On the other hand she has had almost a dozen chicks starve to death. I'm dumbfounded why Iris doesn't try to tear Louis to pieces...that being said Ospreys are pretty non confrontational and she has been at this nest for so long that leaving isn't an option. I would love nothing more than to someday see Iris tear Louis apart piece by piece and parcel him out to her nestlings so at least once before he dies he can provide a good meal to this nest.

I was confused by this too. I feel like he got his wires crossed and was treating her like an intruder until the last minute when he was like "Oh ok it's you!" and mated.

He seems to be very clumsy. I thought raptor males usually close their talons when doing this to avoid hurting the females. It is nice to have an Osprey nest in a car park for easy viewing.

Yes he's supposed bend his elbows so he doesn't hurt her and he's not. ☹️

I thought it was determined that Louis already had a "wife" at another nest and Iris was the "side chick"

Poor Iris, she doesn't deserve this treatment. Wish Louis would stay away, permanently.

Yeah, his wife lives about a mile up the river. I believe the nest is on the lights of a ball park or something. No camera on it. I think when Louis first teamed up with Iris he was cheating on her as he wasn't spending much time with her or providing food for the nestlings. I used to joke he had a girlfriend up Rattlesnake Creek somewhere. But he teamed up with this other lady and flies down the river when he wants a little nookie on the side with Iris.
