There was nothing as special as strolling into your local game store and looking at the walls of strange used ps2 games. So much interesting cover art, so many crazy games that will probably never be made again. It truly was a wonderful time for games. Anyone else ever play steambot chronicles?

The years between 2012 and 2015 (let alone 2014) were when the longest-running console (even in the long-awaited (I know a lot of people wanted it stop at the seventh generation era of gaming, myself partially included, but part of me is glad the eighth generation era is over) ninth generation era of gaming) found a time to quit as a 2000s (to (a tiny extent because of how little games it could pump in the) early 2010s knowing its commonplace 3D style looking dated depending on the person. I think they can age either well (like Crash of the Titans, Ratchet & Clank (except for Secret Agent Clank), Jak & Daxter and Pac-Man World 2) or poorly to the point where they didn’t even hold up by sixth-gen/early 2000s standards) console. But with games like the one in the thumbnail, I wanna make a version where that hot thicc chick is fully naked!

Yahtzee talked about this. It was a perfect timing thing where the console had enough processing power to render a ton of stuff we couldn't before, while the price for making games hadn't ballooned to where they are today, so publishers could experiment with a ton of different kinds of games. This was the perfect time for the "AA" game, games not high budget enough to be AAA but still backed by a large enough team and budget to not be considered an Indie.
@flatterghast
@flatterghast 2 жыл бұрын
@@dyldragon1 It is kind of a shame that that kind of thing is a niche now. Nowadays most focus is on sketchy AAA companies that use tactics to rush games like crunch, and I feel that you see less games that are made with the passion of an indie dev but with a very large team and bigger budget.
@BloodRedFox2008

@@flatterghast I am aware of one publisher that is keeping the “AA” torch lit. Indie games are no doubt cool, but I miss when double-A and even some triple-A games from the PS2 era delivered gloriously strange experiences, not just pretty graphics. Like, nowadays your choices are limited to small indie games that are super-creative, but don’t have the manpower and budget to make the game “big” or have equally-crazy 3D graphics, or triple A games that look pretty but can’t do anything interesting with the gameplay and graphics because the it costs a lot of money to make and they need to appeal to EVERYONE just to break even. In the PS2 era, though, it was like you could have your cake and eat it, too-if you find the right obscure game, you could have BOTH creative gameplay and visuals AND good-for-the-time triple-A 3D graphics!

Freaky Flyers reminsd me a ton of Cartoon Network Racing. My sister and I had so much fun with that way back. Being able to play as Powerpuff girls, Courage, and Dexter's Labatory, plus more. It was so fun. I remember vividly playing on a Courage The Cowardly dog Map, with Jonny Bravo as my driver. I don't know why or what about it stuck out to me so much. But I loved that game. I couldn't find a physical copy that would arive any time soon. So I last year went and emulated it on the PC. Played it with my sister, found out there are cheat codes! I never seemed to have realized this, I found one that unlocked everything. It turns out, that all the maps and characters my sister and I played back as kids, wasn't even half the content. Since they locked away a bunch of maps and one extra character of all the shows in the game. Took me 15 or so years to realize this. But that was such a fun time.

It's odd because people have gotten more into niche stuff but at the same time you just see less of it. I think the main reason why PS2 games kept getting made was because of the fact that the wii was so under powered. Like, If they already have to dedicate a seperate studio to making the wii port, the hardware between the Wii and PS2 is similar, So why not also make a PS2 port because it's the highest selling console of all time next TO The wii? Plenty of people still have a PS2. The Wii is THE MAIN REASON the PS2 stuck around for so long.

There was also a lesser-known spin-off of vib-ribbon on ps2 that i never hear anyone talk about, Mojib-Ribbon. it's themed around calligraphy, philosophy, and rap. Never made it outside japan, and i can understand why. The gameplay is dependent on the Japanese spellings of words and uses tts voices for everything, it is downright impossible to localize. you play using only the right stick, pushing and holding it down to the beat. kind of difficult imo but a fascinating game and still fun to play.

The Ps2 is a relic of a time in video games that will never recreated. There was over 14,000 different titles released on the ps2. You could do 100 videos on ps2 games and still have obscure games to talk about. Now a days game devs focus all their time on making one game as graphically impressive as possible. Which is smart, I'm not hating, the have better quality assurance now... but I still can't help to long for the time of gaming variety. So much weirdness.

I don't know what's worse, game publishers and hardware manufacturers understanding the horny edginess of the stereotypical gamer and exploiting the shit out of it like mid-90s to late-2000s advertising, or modern stuff where they push so hard to be "inclusive" and "diverse" that half of the audience is irritated with it, and the other half can tell they're just signalling the virtue to try to look good. Both are embarrassing.

Surely there’s some way to advertise to the majority of gamers who are not fooled by corporate “wokeness,” but at the same time want the hobby to have more games they can comfortably play in front of their own mothers and doesn’t make them feel like stereotypical date-less nerds when playing it.

When he screams or had some sort of reference/self aware "joke" it doesn't come off as "try hard." It feels genuine... much more than a radio DJ. Oh on top of all of that, good games, bad games, movies or shows, this man does it all and keeps it interesting. He's not relying on high views or IGN meme status, you know "it has a little something for everyone, it makes you feel like Batman" and Dead Cel review plagiarism.
