I remember years ago when we, the kids of the neighborhood, dared each other to eat nightcrawlers (long, thick worms used for fishing). Despite the fact that I did this eons ago, I'm not sure I would have the fortitude to do it again. I remember being at a party in Davao right after our honeymoon when the "balut boy" rode by on his bicycle and honked his horn. My sharp eared mother-in-law ran out and bought some. It was time to "make a man" out of her son-in-law. They got me one egg and a liter of ice cold Coke from the Sari Sari store down the street. All of my new relatives began howling for me to eat the balut. I cracked the egg... slurped down the soup inside it, and quickly took the shell off. I closed my eyes and shoved most of it in my mouth and immediately sloshed down a whole mouthful of Coke. Somebody yelled... "Hey, I think I see a feather in your mouth!" It didn't taste too bad at all... like a hard boilded egg... but the feather comment made me a little nauseous. That's the extent of my brush with unique food in the Philippines. I will say, however, that I have a hard time with bagoong. For some reason, I really fear eating it, which means that I steer clear of pinakbet. Perhaps I'll give it a try in the very near future. The very very near future... Summer vacay starts next week for me... but for Jennifer and the kids... it starts today. I'll be dropping them off at the airport later tonight. They're on their way on the overnight flight to Manila and then down to Davao. Dad's in Abu Dhabi for one more week for work... Then, it's down to Davao and then to Siargao!!! Perhaps it's time for me to try something weird to eat. If you suggest it... I'll try it!!! I'll even try bagoong again. Gotta run... Keep on keepin' on!

Just to add to your tamilok info. They are sometimes referred to as mangrove worms and wood-ship borers. They take the taste of the wood that was immersed in the water, if the water is much brinier it taste a lot salty, but in some areas, like in our mangroves in Mindanao, it has a slightly sweetish aftertaste because apparently the salt content in our areas is lesser because we have a large body of fresh water nearby (Lanao lake). And indeed if you take out the wood muck from their insides it just taste like your eating fresh oysters. And by the way, the part that Alodia ate in 8:28 is the part that you usually spit out because its their sucker... and its usually the bitter end. Congratulations WilOdia for your tamilok experience... :-)
