What do mesmerism, hypnotism, Mozart, glass harmonicas, animal magnetism, and Ben Franklin have in common? They were all part of Franz Mesmer's discoveries of how to put people in a trance and relieve their symptoms! In this video, the first in a short series on hypnotism, you will learn about Mesmer, the man who discovered what we now call hypnosis. Despite his accomplishments in this field, Mesmer's career and personal life were shrouded in controversy. The video covers Mesmer's mysterious beginnings, his association with musical celebrities like Mozart and Haydn, his use of the glass harmonica, and his interest in magnetism, which led him to treat patients with magnets and his own supposed animal magnetism. The video also includes the story of Mesmer's most famous patient, Maria Theresia von Paradis, who claimed that he successfully restored her sight, and Mesmer's creation of the "baquet," a tub that could mass-produce magnetic cures. The video concludes with Mesmer's fall from grace, thanks to the skeptical medical establishment. Here's a quick look into the life and work of Franz Anton Mesmer, a man whose discoveries continue to influence modern psychology.

Great video. It's important to note that, in light of then current medical practices (which included Bloodletting, sometimes even with leeches - which more often than not would lead patients to their demise), it's kind of complicated to brand Mesmer as a charlatan given the context of his times. As the commision officially registered, the patients did improve somehow, whether it was by Magnetism or the power of suggestion. There is a hypothesis by which Magnetism is but an ancient non-verbal form of semiotic communication, directly influencing the subject / receiver's subconscious to kickstart his/her own healing mechanisms. Hence Magnetism being the father of Hypnosis and one of the grandfathers of Psychology.

IMO this is a very important point which seems to routinely go unnoticed in the various send-ups of Mesmer. As this video points out, Mesmer himself was a member of the contemporary medical establishment

The use of "negative magnetism" was well depicted by the actor William Macy in the movie the cooler if I recall correctly.
