Nikki, that is Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) as Victor Creel. His appearance plus all the 80s horror references has really made this show even more special to me. Max deserves an award for that performance. It really blew me away. I’ve been listening to Kate Bush on repeat since watching the episode. And yes I did watch all of season 4 volume 1 in the dark 🖤

Lots of little twisty intertwined nods. Vecna's appearance (the big clawed hand) and modus operandi of killing people in dreams mirroring Freddy Krueger, Robert Englund playing Victor, the jock leader being named Jason and stalking Eddie around a lake, when Jason delivers his speech it's playing a song called Psycho Killer. Now all we need is a Freddy (Vecna) vs. Jason. :P

I wrote this comment in another video: Vecnas power is really a metaphor for suicide. The reason he couldn’t stop Max from escaping is because she had the will to live despite the trauma because of the memories of her friends. Vecna’s victims so far unfortunately didn’t have the positive memories or friend group to pull them out. Although Vecna himself seems like a physical threat I don’t think he really is. The falling rocks and debris could be seen as a representation of the challenges a suicidal person has to go through to choose to live. For many suicidal people choosing to live is an incredibly difficult challenge. That’s why Max’s run for survival is so meaningful. Even though she has so much trauma and pain she still chooses to run to her friends. She runs with all she can back to the people who she loves.

Couldn't have said it better. The allegory for depression is incredibly powerful and hits me really hard. I love that sort of psychological horror where the villain is really just a manifestation of our own internal demons. Fantastic and meaningful in equal measures.
@Lilah1848
@Lilah1848 2 жыл бұрын
I agree. I saw it more as a metaphor for depression. Having been depressed before, you isolate yourself because you think you're a burden to other people, even though they tell you they are there, you just can't feel it. You feel nothing. You give up mentally until you make little steps to pull yourself out of it, which is what I feel Max did at the end. You have to remember that you and your life are worth fighting for.

I know a lot of reactors have been frustrated with how Max didn't want to talk to people but I can relate so much with Max especially when I was in a very dark moment of my life. @TheNaughtyFrench
@TheNaughtyFrench 2 жыл бұрын
That's the reason why she wrote letters, actually it's better than talking sometimes, writing helps people to focus on what they have to say, because sometimes it's complicated to find words and also it's frustrating when someone in front of you push you to talk, we don't wanna talk because seeing the reaction in front of us it's more painful and makes the brain difficult to handle.

In earlier episodes Lucas tells Max "it's like you're not even here anymore", in regards to how disconnected in all her trauma and grief she's become. This really adds an extra layer to the end of the last scene where Max is repeating "I'm still here", as it seems to illustrate her last minute escape, as not only managing to get away from Vecna, but as the moment she is making the decision she WANTS to stay and reconnect with people she loves. Ironic, that by preying on people's traumas Vecna unintentionally led to Max's breakthrough in dealing with hers.

This is honestly one of the most emotionally powerful episodes of tv I have ever seen. As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety my whole life I knew exactly what Max was thinking and feeling. Like you’ve fallen into a frozen lake, your strength starts to leave your body and you just want to stop fighting, sink and let the darkness take you. But then like with Max hearing her song and seeing the hole that will lead her back to her loved ones you yourself have to just look for where you fell through the ice, dig deep to find a strength that you never knew was there, swim to the surface, and drag yourself out of that cold dark and lonely place. Obviously I burst into tears of relief when the episode ended. To everyone else out there who feels like they are alone and in pain know this, you’re not broken, and you’re not alone.❤️❤️

Sadie really gave 120% for this episode. She'd written letters to everyone and resigned herself to her fate. She was so ready for Vecna to take her. To listen to the dark thoughts in her mind. The lyrics of the song, "I'd make a deal with God, and get him to swap our places" and Max thinking about Billy seems to imply she wishes he could be alive right now. Even if it meant she wouldn't be. But when she thinks about things that make her happy, her friends, all the wonderful memories she has, she decides to run. She decides to live.

Fun Fact: That song that was playing while Max was about to die at the hands of Vecna was "Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush. After this show, it hit #1 on the iTunes Charts.

Friggin’ incredible episode! The sheer amount of things they managed to put into this episode, without making it feel bloated or too long, is… mind-boggling! From Hopper’s escape, the one-shot shootout scene, Victor Creel’s story and Max’s trip to hell and back… wow! And yes, the Vecna suit is practical, albeit with a few digital alterations (removal of the nose, etc.)

I needed some time to just sit and collect myself after this episode and stop crying. For people who have experienced traumatic events and/or suffer with depression and suicidal thoughts, this all hits very close to home. An exceptional episode of Stranger things and brilliant performance for Sadie Sink. Celeb also need some real credit too. The line "We though we'd lost you" was delivered so perfectly, I think that's the moment I broke down.

Well Nikki that song "Running Up That Hill" is now charging up the singles charts across the world! Perhaps this timeless song with the expert use of it in Stranger Things will finally result in Kate Bush getting the recognition that she deserves in America, elsewise she's considered to be a Musical Icon and pioneer. Thank you for your great reactions to a fantastic episode

I thought the same thing. I was worried about Max, but for the most part, I thought she would get through it and make it out alive. Then that flashback montage started and it scared the hell out of me and made me think Vecna was actually going to kill her. That cut back to her being okay was relief to an insane degree.

It looked like Max was in Vecna's mindscape. I have a feeling that either everyone in El presence has somehow absorbed some of her psychic abilities, like in Stephen King's "dreamcatcher" or the fact that they know about the upside down has changed their perception of reality to the point they can resist and enter Vecna's mind to a degree.

Hey Nikki& Steve , Your reactions and comments for this episode had me so tuned in . I was feeling the tension and my shoulders were up around my ears. Ugh.... this was a tough one and it took me a minute to sigh relief at the end . This is definitely a new one on my favorites list and I am here for the journey . The whole scene with the New "house" for Victor's family added Nancy and Robin getting Victor to tell them what happened... that felt so crazy intense for me... the burning crib and baby screaming was Horrific . I agree with you both.... the Horror level for season 4 has catapulted from previous seasons ; this was already a brilliant series from the beginning but season 4 is Mind Blowing and I appreciate Everything you both bring to your channel and I am looking forward to more here .

Love this episode, even though it was extremely stress inducing. My emotion level turned up to 11, so much so that my roomie started knocking on my door asking if I was "OK". I assured her I was fine and why I was so vocal. She didn't realize that season 4 dropped and said she was going to start watching immediately. Fast Forward several hours later, I hear my roomie yelling from her room. I went out to the hall and waited a couple of minutes. When she came out of her room, she was shaken. All she said to me was, " At least Max is alive" with a half sobbing, half laughing voice.

Finally getting to watch a reaction video in current time lol! I’ve wanted to comment on so many previous videos y’all have done , but I was always like 2 years behind 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣 Love you guys!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I feel like the thing that separated Max from the rest of Vecnas victims, is her having the benefit of friends who have already been involved with the supernatural world… the others had no one to talk to about it, bc they knew people would think they were crazy, so they stayed completely isolated and easy targets…. She appeared to be this way, bc she was isolating herself for a while… but once things really got crazy , she had her supernatural fighting buddies to help ❤️

I love the Max scene at the end, it's so touching. In my opinion, it's such an incredible visual depiction of trying to come out of depression as well. She had been depressed since Billy's death and literally separated herself from the world and her friends. She was beginning to accept death as an option and then she literally ran and fought for her life and her first words to say ' I'm still here'..... talk about tears 😭

I gotta say I certainly enjoyed that The Cable Guy reference that Nikki snuck in there. lol This was definitely another great reaction video and can't wait until you guys react to episode 5. Also Nikki was correct in identifying the infamous Robert Englund (aka Victor Creel) at the asylum scene which I found to be particularly amusing since it involved Robert once again encountering a character by the name of Nancy.
