In honor of National Service Dog Month, in this video, I tell three stories about strange experiences my service dog Champ and I have encountered while out in public. These stories include someone trying to feed him while he was on duty, a random lady stopping my mom in the mall to tell her what gear she thought he should be wearing, and my high school asking me illegal questions! Enjoy!

How you and your mom keep your cool in the midst of barriers and rude people is amazing to me.

One time at the grocery store someone was eating a bag of cheese puffs and asked if my dog could have one. I was so surprised I just said "uh, sure" and that's how my dog had the best working day ever, cause food is life.

Just came across your channel. I’m a service dog handler and always love finding new handlers to follow. I can’t believe the male person actually waving pepperoni in your dogs face and trying to feed it to them. First of all like you said why would you do that to any random dog particular service dog and when you said no they should’ve realized how ridiculous they were not kept insisting upon it. Also good for your dog for not taking it my dog is good about ignoring food distractions but I think she may not of been able to resist someone holding out a piece like that.

I always want to pet and love on service animals. I know I'm not supposed to so I don't, of course. But the urge is still there.

That is absolutely absurd that someone could think they could pat let alone feed a working service dog. To interrupt the animals routine, perhaps distract it etc, and regardless I would never pat someone's dog just randomly. As for feeding and getting all indignant about it, that just takes the cake. Fellow chair user myself, and gees I have had some run in's with stupidity but that is just lunacy.

I never let anyone feed my dogs. I tell them they can hand the treat to me, and if I approve, I will give it to my dog as I see fit. If it’s a treat, he has to work for it. If it’s regular food and I approve, I will place it in my dogs food bowl. This is how I have taught my dogs not to beg for food.

It's so odd that you're school didn't give you an IEP, I got diagnosed with ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder, but I got an IEP when I was 5. The school 504 or IEP system is very odd sometimes.

While I can understand not asking about cuing, feeding, toileting, I think you might want to flip the script and see emergency protocols and transportation concerns as definitely under school purview...for your safety, for your animal's safety, for the safety of others in your school. Especially considering this was all new to the school, as you said. Hindsight is 20/20, but it might have been nice to approach the school with saying you are getting a service dog and you would like them to understand how it impacts them and their services. I can also see that exhaustion of fighting for 504 accommodations would make that less likely. People fear what they don't understand. Only you can help them understand. As a classroom teacher, I had a student with a wheelchair, and I can remember being woefully unprepared for what to do in an emergency. We aren't trained for it. I didn't have personal experience to rely on. I fretted so much over fire drills and knew I wasn't ready for an actual emergency. Fortunately there wasn't one. So, sometimes it's ignorance not rudeness. Not trying to do anything illegal. Not trying to make your life harder. Just ignorance. Btw, I just found your vids today (I'm not on the other media platforms) and have already learned so much. Thank you for posting!

an old woman tried feeding treats to mine while my back was turned. my dog refused to take it (now i have a lab, shed happily take anything from anyone 😭) i was looking in a shop window so saw her reflection feeding my dog. i chose not to say anything though because she was old and probably just lonely and interacting with dogs could have been the highlight of her day. and since my dog wouldnt take anything i didnt have to worry about him being poisoned or anything

I know some customers at work that do train these service dogs and all I say to the trainer is good luck with the training. I do hear some dog barking in the supermarket which should not be allowed in the supermarket because the only time the service dogs should bark is to get help from a worker if the person fainted on the floor due to having a seizure attack.

Service dogs can bark to alert their own handler to an on coming medical episode. Not just for seeking help for a down handler.

In my ignorance, I would have asked if it was okay if a water bowl and dog bed were provided in the classroom for your use. And I would have suggested the best place for potty breaks. It surprises me that by doing so, I would be breaking the law. Water and potty breaks just seem like a natural thing to accommodate as a pet owner. Not saying it's wrong or anything. Just surprising.

There are subtle differences in what you suggested and what the school did, but they are important differences. If, for example, the school offered to provide a bed or water bowl, that would likely be fine (depending on how they worded it). But what they did here was absolutely make a legal inquiry. Arguably they demanded answers. And she's right that's very *VERY* wrong. But, Cassidy's explanation, with all due respect, is a bit broad and lacking nuance. The law is full of nuance. She says "question." The correct term is "inquire." They are legally distinct. For example, "Is there anything we can provide or do to help?" Or "Would you like us to create additional space in the classroom for your service animal?" These are undoubtedly questions... legally actionable? Ha.

So a lot of people use a stiff handle for mobility and other guide tasks for people who are not blind, however, that handle wouldnt work with your height, and for his large size,

Ummmm, thats honestly creepy, for anyone watching with pet dogs or working dogs, NEVER let strangers even feed your dogs like that people! Especially out of nowhere like that! psa, it could be laced or poisoned food!! They could he pre meditating a massive crime springing out of nowhere like that! I would have called the cops tbh, she was distracting your sd so that was already a good reason to call,

I think they're allowed to ask anything they want, but you're not required to answer. So ignore those questions if you choose. Putting the school aside it seems like your major problems are by misguided people who simply love dogs or want to help. Annoying yes, but I'd prefer that to hostility.
