5:09 I wouldn’t recommend that! I mean: put the screw and hammering on it. Cuz you can easily damage the thread! You could use a metallic cylinder for it. As you said: “better safe than sorry”

Thanks for this! I have an old MIK squier with a cracked trem block. It’s a 2-point bridge but the screw holes are the size that would be for a 6-hole. The original bridge and trem is apparently not sold anywhere anymore. I’m planning to install a Wilkinson but need to widen the holes obviously. Does that sound reasonable? Any tips?
@BOBANDVEG3 жыл бұрын
The sell rear 6 screw fix bridges, and 4 point (just each corner) that cover the entire trem hole now. This is rather outdated. Make sure you use your wording when looking for it
@yoyofargo Жыл бұрын
I wish they would just outright abandon the 6 point trem in general it's so bad. Especially on their cheaper lines.
@iLL_Corvo3 ай бұрын
Perhaps you should abandon the guitar altogether yourself
@yoyofargo3 ай бұрын
@@iLL_Corvo the 6 point tremolo is a defunct design and there is no reason for it to exist. Two point trems are a lot more stable by the nature of how they function. Knowing this is easy, but I can understand how it might be difficult for some.
@TheMcstevester6 күн бұрын
Completely agree. I imagine they aren't any more expensive to make, if anything maybe even a buck or two cheaper
@jdogb13 жыл бұрын
Very cool. What height do you put the two rocker screws ? I have a couple two point trems and I’ve been setting the posts so that the base of the plate is around 3-4mm above the body. I’m curious how high others float these two point bridges 🤘
@hoovboy143 жыл бұрын
It somewhat depends on the neck and the frets but generally around 1/8” or 3-4 mm is where mine end up too. My rule for myself is that I need to get the string height right and then I want the plate to be floating parallel to the body. Thanks for watching!

I messed this up, I bought an Araucaria Wood body to make a "charvel san dimas" with hardtail, it was done on cnc, and the guy also drilled the holes to pass the strings, I attached my bridge over those holes, but I had some trouble on my drill press to attach the neck, so, I didnt measure the bridge and its 0,2 inches too close to the body, it doesnt tune well on any fret. If I fill the bridge holes, may I redrill it correctly again, or should I cut a little of the bridge plate to take it further and make the string complete the scale?
@waylong252 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't see much reason that filling and re-drilling wouldn't work just be sure you're using a good strong wood glue (NOT Elmer's 🤢) and hard wood such as maple or mahogany.

So my strat has 2 1/16 mounting spacing and I know that this bridge has 2 7/32 string spacing. My question could I still swap this bridge onto mine even tho it's different spacing? Because you have to drill holes in it could I be able to drill in hole for mine?
@JoseLuis-kx2dz2 жыл бұрын
Hello friend, have you had a problem with changing the bridge, since I want to do it, but I don't know if it affects the wood of my guitar
@poly5037 ай бұрын
You didn't do any widening to the bridge cavity? I saw some videos where they did take some wood off of the cavity
@maxmustardman2982 жыл бұрын
did you clamp the body down otherwise, or did you just go ahead and drill the holes like that ? I'm wondering bc I wanna do exactly that with a small drill press
@hoovboy142 жыл бұрын
I did not clamp it down, although doing so is not a bad idea. I was working on my rubber pad which helps against slipping, but it probably would be even safer if clamped.

Nice job, I want to do a similar upgrade, what drill sizes do you use for these kind of studs?
@0Imtheslime04 жыл бұрын
not all studs are alike. It all depends what manufacture of tremolo system you want to use.
@hoovboy143 жыл бұрын
I can't remember off the top of my head- a good thing to do is to measure the diameter of the studs with a digital calipers and then subtract 1/32 of an inch.

What’s size but did you last use?

Maybe it is a dumb question, but may i use a conventional drill (hammer drill), the same one that I use for make holes on a concret wall?
@HLS69353 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't use a hammer drill on a guitar body!
@hoovboy143 жыл бұрын
I'd avoid using a hammer drill- the turning motion is a series of powerful torques instead of a smooth rotation like on a normal drill. They're great for driving a screw through sheet rock or 2x4s but you risk chipping and tear out drilling with them.
@thorvelizelos Жыл бұрын
Just a question. Are the screws that go into the studs supposed to be a bit loose and able to wiggle back and forth a bit? I just hammered in the studs with the regular screws inside with s rubber hammer and worried perhaps I damages the threads in the studs.
@hoovboy14 Жыл бұрын
Not gonna lie, there is a risk of that- another viewer actually correctly pointed that out a while ago. So sorry about that. That said, I think you’re fine. The screws can be a little bit loose, they’re supposed to be able to move easily. It’s especially encouraging that you used a rubber hammer. They’re not super loose, right? If they’re just a little bit wobbly that’s ok.
@Inspector-712 жыл бұрын

What if you get a guitar body with no holes drilled for the tremlo how do you find out where to drill them?

There are lots of helpful guides and templates available online for that. Make sure when you’re searching for them that you have both the correct body and correct bridge model.

How’s the longetivity of this mod? I’m thinking of doing this but am concerned about the durability of the wood over time from the stress it endures from string tension.
@rodrigomartins96923 жыл бұрын
Some Ibanez guitars (made of baswood i guess) get broken in right there on the bridge block cavity. But if it is a cheap guitar (like my Squier Affinity) i would try to do this. Actually i will
@hoovboy143 жыл бұрын
The wood holds up just fine! The added bonus there is that the wood glue used to fill the holes is stronger than the wood itself, so you shouldn't see it moving around at all.
@patrickbrady8326 Жыл бұрын
Instead of using chop Stix I use dowels I made the hole bigger and put a larger dowel in them for more stability and longevity
@stonehartfloydfan Жыл бұрын
Old video I know but before you drill run the drill in reverse and use a brad tip and you will avoid chip out as it scores the edge through the paint. Areas around a bridge suffer from a fair amount of stress and while you cannot see it under that paint the adhesion may not be as good as you think or cracked, moister gets in there and loosen things up over time and before you know it you have a big chunk of finish flying off over the bench (have had enough customers guitars over the bench to know that).. in the end you get a much cleaner job. Happy guitar repair.

Nice video mate , the chopsticks thing sounds like something my adhd brain would think of lol. Any reason why you chose bot to use a non shrinking wood filler suited to the gap ? Would be quicker and less fiddly with the glue
@hoovboy142 ай бұрын
Thanks! Wood filler would be fine too. The chopstick is just what I had on hand and is based on a trick I picked up at school. For 4 of six of the holes it doesn’t matter what you use but for the two I had to widen I’d still lean towards using solid wood as I don’t know how a wood paste mixture or wood filler would react to being under string pressure. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

is this good for basswood bodies? im tryna swap a 6 screw trem to a 2 point trem on it, im not sure if basswood is strong enough to be modded as shown in the video
@hoovboy143 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, basswood should be able to hold a two-point term without any problem. If you’re feeling unsure, you can fill all six of the original holes.

How dramatic It could be if the point where the string rest on the saddles is a little far or close in the new Bridge than the older. I mean...you really gotta check Up if the center of the old screw really matches with the center of the new one in order to keep the instrument intonation right?
@hoovboy143 жыл бұрын
Yes, that’s important, although if it’s a little off front to back you can adjust the saddles for it. I’d be even more wary of straying side to side.

I always hook the spring to the block first and then its all about extending the tension with a flathead screwdriver or a testpen further to the hooks until they take each other on naturally. Its easier that way, I couldnt find any methods to extend the spring and try to hook them to the block last.

You never said how to tighten the trem post screws. Do you snug them right up or what? No one explains this part.
@hoovboy142 жыл бұрын
So the screws just determine the height- you don’t need to tighten them all the way. Once you start putting the bridge on them, you determine how high they need to be and turn them to get that height.

Hello! Do you know if I can make the inverse mod putting a six holes bridge to replace the 2 point trem of my American Standard Strat? I feel more comfortable with that kind of trem that's on my MIM Strat.
@ryanmorin64303 жыл бұрын
hey bud, yea you could. Basically, you'd have to go to your local building supply store and buy some wooden dowels to plug the holes of your 2 point trem system... small amount of glue, hammer it in, sand them flush to guitar body, and let dry for a day or 2. then just drill the 6 holes for the new tremelo :) May not look perfect though.

@hoovboy143 жыл бұрын
You need glue to plug the old holes but not to fix the new studs in place. In fact, it would be a mistake to glue them in because if you ever needed to remove them, it would be extremely difficult. If the holes are sized right, the friction of the fit should be plenty to hold them in place.
