Love that you love our country, but what I love most is that you are so respectful, so many people not just Americans traveling to the UK but anyone travelling abroad think it is funny to say nasty mean things about the country they are in. Visit Wales when you're next in the UK. Beautiful country with its own distinct culture and language; also famous for its castles. Caernarfon and Conwy Castles in North Wales are super impressive as is Caerphilly Castle in South Wales.

The crimped edge of the pasty is used as a handle when your hands were work dirty to allow you to eat the main body. The crimped edge could then be thrown away . Particularly useful for the miners in cornwall who used to eat them at work.

For those visitors to the UK who do not know anything about the Celts who lived here before the Romans arrived you might be interested as to how the the river Avon got its name. Some Roman surveyor or official, seeking the local name for the river, pointed at it and asked what it was called. The local gave a very logical answer he said River, which in Welsh ( a celtic language) is Afon or Avon. So the River at Stratford is the River River

6:06 Stratford from the Anglo-Saxon Straet-ford, for here was a ford by which an ancient Roman road (street) crossed the River Avon. The ford eventually was replaced by a bridge, the present structure (Clopton Bridge) dating from the late-15th century. Any place in England which has Stratford as a part of its name is situate where a Roman road forded a water course, whilst Avon simply is the anglicized version of afon, the Celtic word for river. There are five rivers in England named Avon, the one flowing through Stratford-upon-Avon sometimes referred to as the Warwickshire Avon or Shakespeare's Avon.

You're not 'on campus' lol. You're in Oxford. The colleges of Oxford University are spread throughout the city. There is no, 'Oxford University Campus'. Though each college will have their own grounds. :)

Thought you might like to know that the clock tower you admired at 3:30 is known as the American Fountain -- it was donated to the town by the Philadelphian publisher and philanthropist George Childs and unveiled by the renowned actor Henry Irving in 1887. Also (since you asked!), the riverside park at 6:17 is called the Recreation Ground.

I love Stratford. I work there once or twice a year but also have played there many times with my band. When I have visitors it is the first place we go to. Glad you had a great time there. Looking forward to my next visit when this lockdown is over.

A word of advice to visitors to the UK that want to visit castles etc. Many castles, abbeys etc charge an entrance fee but if you join English Heritage you can visit most of them and places like Stone Henge for free as many times as you like

I watched this and was hugely impressed by your respectfulness; thank you. It's fantastic that you were able to go to some of the generally lesser visited areas when it comes to tourists visiting the UK. Genuinely, you really had a great checklist of places to visit (Warwick Castle is beautiful I agree! Also just a quick heads up; we generally pronounce Warwick as you might say Warrick. We do tend to pronounce things quite strangely and I get some place names wrong all the time so it's very understandable!) and I hope you had a nice stay here in England and if you ever come back here then we welcome you all warmly!

Melissa coming out with new names for the Eagle & Child is not without precedent, as some locals refer to it as "The Bird & Baby" 🙂 The round building you see at 11:55 and later walk past is called the Radcliffe Camera. It was finished in about 1748, so it is only a paltry 3 decades older than the USA! It is now part of the Bodleian Library (2nd largest library in the UK) and serves as a reading room. The camera is joined to the main library building by an extensive two storey underground archive room and tunnel called the Gladstone link; as you walked around the camera, people were probably studying under your feet! I like Oxford a lot. The feeling you expressed of being inspired to learn by the architecture was captured by the Victorian poet Matthew Arnold, who called Oxford the 'city of dreaming spires'. British comedian Russell Brand (Katy Perry's ex) made an interesting point once about the architectural similarity of Eton School, Oxford University & the Houses of Parliament. They all look much the same, giving the privileged elite like ex-PM David Cameron (who moved through all three) a feeling of comfort and familiarity not accorded to other people moving into British politics.

It was lovely to see Hill Close gardens as I visted them a couple of years ago there were so many flowers. With my tribal style belly dance troupe I have danced in the grounds of Warwick Castle several times during the Warwick Folk Festival at the end of July.

Not far from Warwick Castle there is Kenilworth Castle about £6.00 to get in as I remember but it is a bit of a ruin. Once a very important castle in England.

Great vlog. So glad you enjoyed our lovely country. Also did you know spiral stairs in castles usually go upwards from left to right. This is to give the advantage to those defending the castle as most people are right handed and can swing their sword downwards onto the invaders.

Hire a row boat on the river and see the castle from an unusual angle for just the cost of the boat!

Coming from Oxford, I can't imagine what it feels like going inside universities that are older than your country. It's a shame we won't be around to see what American culture will be like once it's fully matured in another few hundred years. Glad you enjoyed the food!

Just wanted to add that if its castles you're interested in, most historic towns and cities have at least one. If you go further west into Wiltshire, Dorset and Devon you'll find Iron Age hill forts in abundance and they are all free to enter. (Wiltshire also happens to be the home of many famous Neolithic monuments like Stonehenge, Avebury and West Kennet Longbarrow).

You guys should get the English heritage trust memberships. They're really good to have in your pocket and you can visit any heritage sites listed.

Warwick castle is a privately owned venue. It's expensive because if all the activities there. Actors, maintenance, props, etc. It's also the most complete castle as it was of no strategic importance at all and thus avoided Cromwell's castle wrecking tantrums. The best English castles I've been to are Tutbury, Lincoln and Ludlow. Ruins all, but full of history. Lincoln also has a Victorian experimental prison that is fascinating, as well as a stunningly beautiful, massive cathedral that was once the largest outside if Rome. Tutbury is the most ruined of the three as it was of major strategic importance and was a real threat to Cromwell. It has stunning views. Ludlow is massive and looks incredible from the river.

Curiously Avon is also Welsh for river. Spelt afon but f in Welsh is prounounced as a v. Double f - ff - is prounounced as f.

At certain times of the year Warwick castle (pronounced Warrick) holds jousting competitions and have medical markets.

If you get the chance you should visit Warwick Castle itself, it’s a little pricey but it’s worth it.

If you plan on retiring in Stratford then I suggest that you get saving. House prices aren't cheap there. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed watching

Should at least have a bit of a look up north - Liverpool, Manchester, whitby, Edinburgh. So much to see, but the north is best for walking and outdoors holidays. Wales is also extremely nice btw.

I’m so glad you decided to visit here. A lot of foreigners think that London is really British. It’s far from British now. If you really want a taste of England it’s places like in the west of England Bath Bristol Cornwall Devon. That’s where you really see England at its finest.

Josh & Melissa, it was a pity that you never actually got to see the inside of Warwick Castle as its stacked with old armour and weapons etc. Part of the castle is still actually lived in and not open to the public. My son got married at the castle 2 years ago and spend his first honeymoon night there in their honeymoon suite with a four poster bed!

"Avon" was the Celtic name for "river" so there are River Avons all over England. The City of Bristol sits upon one River Avon and the City of Salisbury sits upon another, entirely different, River Avon. Cornish Pasties (or "Tiddy Oggies") originated in the Royal Duchy of Cornwall where they were the staple diet of the tin and copper miners. A proper Cornish Pastie has meat in one end and fruit in the other!
