Four years after the Galwan clash and the military standoff between India and China that continues to this day, what lessons can one draw from it? Is there a way forward? Will China continue its belligerent course or does a recent statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the appointment of the Chinese ambassador to Delhi after a gap of 17 months suggest that both sides are looking at some breakthroughs in the near future?
All these questions and more came up at a roundtable organised by StratNews Global almost a month before the 4th anniversary of Galwan. Among the participants were China scholars Jayadeva Ranade of the Centre for China Analysis & Strategy, Lt. Gen. Rakesh Sharma, who commanded 14 Corps overseeing Ladakh, Srikanth Kondapalli, head of East Asia Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University and Sriparna Pathak associate professor at Jindal Global University.
Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale and Editor Surya Gangadharan anchored the nearly an hour-long discussion.
Ranade believes Galwan was China’s effort to show India its place, that Beijing did not take kindly to Delhi’s efforts for a place at the international table, and that India was trying to rival and outshine China.
Gen Sharma acknowledged that China’s current military posture will remain a challenge to the Indian military planners for a foreseeable future. China has ensured the border is “benign” for them, he noted, but the unprecedented military build up has ensured that the next time India will not be a pushover in any future conflict.
Prof Kondapalli pointed to the difference in the understanding of the concept of strategic autonomy. The Chinese see it as independence from the US but India sees it as allowing freedom of manoeuvre vis a vis China. He faulted India for its failure to mobilise and bring together all those countries embroiled in territorial disputes with Beijing-Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and the Philippines.
Sriparna Pathak underscored China’s declining economic growth. Although it claims more than 5 percent GDP growth rate, the reality is that the Chinese economy has not grown more than a little over 1%. That crisis, she argues, suggests Taiwan will have lower priority, at least no move likely on the island this year.

Nitin should invite Pravin Sawhney to discuss this issue. He is very knowledgeable about 🇮🇳 / 🇨🇳 disputes n above all he is respected by all. This group of peoples have ax to grind against China n can’t be trusted to be objective. What’s needed is an unbiased voice. Not a group of converts, preaching to each other’s.

The reality is that neither side can "win big". Neither China nor India can take a big piece of land from each other. If either manages to do it in a sneaky fashion, the result is a fierce battle. It is time for these two countries to accept the reality and cede whatever they do not control now. Make today's line of control the official border. And concentrate your energy and resources on solving problems of your own society. Education, pollution, healthcare.

Most of them are clueless about economy. Why China has become India's largest trading partner? There are synergies between the 2 big economies. China's economy is far from collapsing and India gets components from China for all the main sectors of India in automobile, pharmaceutical and telecommunication industries. Indian doesn't really buy lamp shades, toys and plastic baaltees from China.

Adoption and implementation of an integrated command and control was the major fallout of Galwan episode. A little misnomer to describe, Galwan was the blessing in disguise. India woke up to greater possibilities of two-front war. Therefore, major thrust to defense manufacturing and deployment is being provided. Faster implementation of each defense initiative is the positive outcome of Galwan

Very interesting conversation. Thank you for bringing several different voices to enlighten this issue. Few points of order - General public does not use 'he' when referring to Chinese PLA forces or China per say. Seems to me mostly military folks in India use such jargon. Why not use "they" or China as a better placeholder for "enemy forces". Kindly include the high definition maps when it comes to addressing China related border issues. Maps help tremendously when these experts are talking about difficult terrain at LAC. Using simple graphics is a much needed feature of any KZfaq public outreach now . Greetings from Atlanta 🙏🏽

I think the border conflict between India and China is being overinterpreted. They are both nuclear powers, and if their conflict is limited to cold weapons, it is actually peaceful and is more like a conflict between two groups of people rather than between two countries. But, both China and India have risen under leaders who leverage nationalistic sentiments to rally their people.Even if both governments are very restrained but neither wants to show weakness.

How many of you have read the 1996 agreement with China? It is a very well-taught agreement. This Agreement strategically advantages to India. In Arunachal Pradesh, there was a problem with the supply to the Indian army. That problem has been solved by constructing a tunnel. Before 1962 the Himalayas and the Passes were all no man-land. The Indian army officers and soldiers were not conversant with beaten tracks connected with the main roads, particularly in the NEFA area. "The Himalayas constitutes an imposing crescent-shaped mountain range extending for over 2500 km from the south of the Indus Valley beyond Nanga Parbat in the west to Namcha Barwa in the east (Fig. 17.1). The range varies in width from 350 km in the west to 150 km in the east". To feed the PLA the Chinese Govt, their vehicles should cross the Himalayas Passes covering 150 to 350 Km of inhospitable and dangerous terrain. So, the Indian Govt is not worried about the Chinese presence in the Himalayas. Otherwise, Indian Govt. has to protect 18 Passes in the Himalayas.

Of India needs to intervene, as these guys who make it in India ( are charging exuberantly), these factories and organisations cannot charge exuberantly ( 30-40 %) maybe ok on some items, but we cannot have people looting in the name of “ make in India”.
