Awesome video, one pitfall of streaming music is you end up with music in general being more generic and less artistic or experimental...... artists are no longer creating albums but rather singles. Over the decades how many songs on albums didn't make number one....but are now considered some of the greatest songs ever written. In todays tiktok/twitter world Frankie's Pleasure Dome would never be enjoyed all the way through. Who has 13 minutes to listen to one song anyways?

I bit the bullet just over a year ago and got into records. I'm loving the thrill of actually having to find an album that I'd otherwise just open in 3 taps on my phone. RAD (80s bmx movie) one of my all time favourite films. And I was born in 97. When I started buying LP'S, the soundtrack to that movie was one of the first I looked for. It took me 11months and 13 days to find a copy here in Australia and it wasn't even me who found it. Thanks to the anniversary of the film, the record was re pressed and then thanks to my dad, he was able to snag a copy and keep it a secret for months until my birthday. The pure joy of placing that record down on my turntable, lowering the tone arm and just sitting back and listening to the first track, Break the ice by John Farnham was... immeasurable. That is something streaming will never ever have.

I copied all of my CDs (over 450 at last count) to my iMac in their LOSSLESS format. I then access it via my new Apple TV connected to my new Samsung TV and tap the optical jack to feed an analog converter that can feed my Marantz 2252B receiver I bought new in 1978 that feeds my JBL L-100's I bought new in 1974 and for fun I still listen to all my cassette tapes I handcrafted back in the 70s/80s on my Nakamichi cassette deck I bought in 1990. I also watch all my TV/movies via this old-school 2-channel system and am very happy. But I'm 71+ years old so what do I know.

What I don't like with most things anymore is that people don't own anything anymore. Any and all streaming services can just take your favorite artists off on a whim, same goes for movie streaming services, wanna watch an old movie from your childhood? It's either edited because one scene is deemed 'too much' for what ever reason, well, you don't own it, too bad.

While I'm fine with digital, I have issues with streaming, I like to own my music and have my own copy, even if it's a digital copy stored on my PC, at least then it's mine and I don't pay some company $15 a month they can't come and take my own personal music collection away from me and I can move it around physically from one machine to another and make backup copies of it. Also, I don't need to be online to hear my music. Not everything has to be online.

I'll purchase my music, but I WILL NOT rent it. My dilemma is, CD's are beginning to disappear, and the streaming services want customers to pay a high premium if they prefer to download/purchase high quality music files. The music industry fails to realize that their tactics are shutting me (and my dollars) out forever. I'll say that again. Forever !

High Premium? What does Apple Music, $6-7 a month? Not living in the USA, so not sure how much exactly you would pay there. Not much for the convenience to discover what you want to buy. For that money I can download files as much as I want and listen to them as long I pay my subscription.

I was surprised to find last month that the Spotify (2012 remastered) version of the holiday classic "A Charlie Brown Christmas" by Vince Guraldi, sounded (to my ears) much better than the 30 year-old CD in my library. It really enhanced the listening experience for me when switching between the 2 formats. The stream was clearer, more dynamic, and enjoyable to listen to than the CD. Not to mention the convenience factor when selecting other individual tracks/titles for playback.

I don't know about you guys but I can't enjoy my music unless I run Roon through HQPlayer and upsample to 1.536 MHz, then send it over galvanically isolated USB to my DDC to eliminate jitter, then I2S, to my R2R DAC set to NOS. Both the DDC and the DAC are clocked using the same oven-controlled crystal oscillator. The balanced output of the DAC is then sent through XLRs (all silver coated OCC copper) to a tube preamp (for warmth and flavour), then balanced XLRs to the solid-state monoblocks (for power and control). I like pure OCC copper for my speaker cable runs, surrounded by a PFA dielectric and shielding of course. It goes without saying that I run everything past the USB on power coming from a direct line I had my electrition install with 8 gauge copper wire, which is then conditioned by my power regenerator, and run to my gear over heavily shielded IEC connectors. To mitigate vibrations the whole stack is suspended above the ground by the hairs of a nordic virgin, who was raised on a diet consisting entirely of sorbothane.

Right on! I'm old school. I grew up listening to music on my turntable, my cassette deck and the radio. All three formats had their advantages and disadvantages. Today I listen on my turntable, cd player and my streamer. Streaming helps me explore new music (like radio did) and my turntable is the preferred mode for me, like the old days, then CD's, since they are easier to handle. But most of all, I just enjoy the music however I can play it.

OK, I do understand that this was satirical, and that's fine. But I have heard no one anywhere talk about the issue of the record companies changing our content on us without our permission, adding contact without our permission, and removing content without our permission. And then there's the issue of if you go to listen to something and it isn't available in your region, you're out luck. The thing that makes vinyl, CDs, cassettes, mini disc, or whatever physical media format you like, so special is the fact that once you've got it in your hands nobody anywhere can do anything to it except you.

Streaming music companies are fantastic for some... Personally I like my music library on my own private server. Why? Owning the music will become important once one or more of these companies become insolvent and shuts down... Then people will regret paying "just to listen" when their library suddenly vanishes. If anyone remembers what Netflix went through with movie companies converting to a streaming service you know what happened. The movie companies CHARGE Netflix just to have the movie listed in the library on top of the fees per view. That's why movies are ROTATED in and out of availability. These streaming services can do the same thing eliminating artists, styles even entire genres of music at the click of a mouse, gone forever. Some may even tie your membership to a certain passport compliance we're not allowed to talk about. Therefore I'm vehemently old school with boxes and boxes of CD's in climate controlled storage and my digital library backed up redundantly. The library consisting of thousands artists and titles will become my children's someday and hopefully they will cherish the music of times passed. These streaming services will not. Mark my words.

Personally it's hard for me to let go of my local library. I've been building it for years and there's no way I'm ever gonna stop. I see it more as an extension of my personality. I still stream music, though, if I want something inoffensive (but still to my taste) to play in the background through loudspeakers and just have the recommendation engine bring up some random song (which I might even buy a CD/lossless copy of if I liked it enough). My music tastes can be absolutely niche and I know that not everyone might appreciate them if I decide to play my local library through loudspeakers.

Appreciate your thoughts (Kristi's too:). About the only use we would have for streaming is finding new music. That alone might be worth the price of admission for us. As far as Hi-Res for my ears, thanks but no thanks.

30 years of streaming at $120 per year = $3600. If you do the math, that is actually a good deal, because that same $3600 would buy you only 360 CD's at $10 each. The music selection is SO much larger via streaming, and you will have so much more fun hearing music you never knew existed. Sure, you don't own the music, but if you truly owned a million CD's, it would be the same as not owning most of them because the majority of your collection would never even get played. There simply is not enough time.

disagree. If you have the cd. you can convert them by using windows media player or i tunes and you can put them on laptop and mobile device. CD is not vinyl. it's very easy to convert them. when you have mp3 library, you can get more features than streaming (like ID3 tags like genre, year, custom tags like producer. tempo changer). It's funny you said "your collection would never even get played". listen here buddy, I have a so many songs on my laptop and I play them everyday. (sometimes I shuffle them all at once). music is not one time thing. do you listen to music like "meh I already listened to this, let's play next song"? I don't do that. well I skipped song so many times but sometimes, I came back to that same song and I felt oh my god this is overlooked banger. this happened so many times in my life. I don't need to listen to A LOT of music like I'm music critic or something. actually I did it already (I was trying to fill my last fm listening history). It wasn't good. I felt like I wanted to stop listening to music. I do use spotify. It's good tool I guess. but why do some people need to think like it is black or white? like... "boooo nintendo sucks! playstation is way better!" you can enjoy both of nintendo and playstation lol.

$120 per year now. Look at video streaming services. Hulu jacked up the price to $19 a month right now to try to get people to buy their ad based tier. If music streaming gets in trouble you really want to have commercials in the middle of listening to your favorite album?

this does make sense and it’s why i have apple music. i was at a point where i was searching for new music alot. but now ive come to a point where i have specific songs. or times where i dont even listen to anything in the car. i think the time for me is near where i cancel my subscription, purchase a few good hits and just listen to free spotify or yt, if i feel like switching it up.

I've been loving streaming music since 2004. It all began with Rhapsody until I migrated to Spotify in 2015. I also use KZfaq Music, and sometimes find their audio quality slightly better than Spotify. Once in a while I use Deezer because they have some obscure albums that other services don't. I dipped my toe in the waters of Amazon and was pleased with that experience too. And yes, I listen to full albums start to finish, all tracks in order. My audio set up is simple, laptop usually with headphones, or my desktop computer connected to a 2 channel amp and speakers.

There's really no comparison IF you have decent gear. I went through the trouble and copied all my discs into iMac using Lossless. Supposedly minimizing degradation of signal and all that. So now I can synch my CD player with a tune on the Mac. When I swap from one signal (the computer stream) to the other (the source CD in the player) it's a HUGE disappointment. Not only is the source signal volume lower on the Mac (everything is UP to Max) but when I change the volume to compensate and then select the DISC, there is zero comparison. The compression just KILLS the sound. I suppose that IF you have a crappy stereo, you won't notice it as much. But my rebuilt Marantz 2240 and Cornwalls don't lie. To be fair, I also have a Squeezebox Touch with a built in DAC. When using that, the sound WAS excellent. But, it no longer "recognizes" my Mac and files. I am unable to access any of them. To make matters worse, it is no longer supported by Logitech. That gizmo was just about the best piece of audio gear I ever owned. Sucks that its now INOP.

If you’re using the dac in your iMac and not sending it into a good quality dac that’s where the difference is. I don’t know what Cd Player you were using, but evidently it has a much better dac than the iMac.

When I was 24, in 1995, I moved to Japan to teach English. I wasn't rich and I wasn't getting moved there by a big company with a bunch of money, so I had to live with the regular airline baggage limits for how many bags I was allowed to take with me and what they were allowed to weigh. I'd guess 50% of my weight limit was CDs. Probably 150-200 of them. For the next several years I lived with a CD-Walkman and a pair of, I guess you'd call them computer speakers in my 10'x10' apartment and it was A-OK. I remember, though, when I got my first iPod and I thought about how different that move would have been if I'd just been able to carry my entire music collection in that little device. All that said, I'd need to sell a bunch of gear if I was to move back to Japan again. La Scalas would take up half of the floorspace in that first place I lived over there.....

On my desktop, I have a pair of decade old Bose Companion II powered speakers that sound just fine, fantastic even (esp. w/ Steely Dan and It Bites and live albums). In the living room, we have a old Bose 2.1 system plugged into our 4K TV (Sceptre) and Apple 4K TV+ Pro Max whatever box that has to be turned off and on with a gigantic Bose-branded universal remote. I use Apple Music WITHOUT spatial audio. I'm reasonably happy 😁

Cmdr Effie Trinket ... Great idea, it will require a special HVAC system for the listening room and these cans of this perfect air will be the source for the system. You will need to constantly replace these cans as the air is used up. Since the room will be polluted by the listener exhaling, everyone in the room will have a special mask on to capture this exhaled air and pump it out of the room with silent pumps.

I have a vast vinyl collection. A substantial cd collection. More than one DAC. Yes, there are times when I put an album on and listen to it in it’s entirety even I don’t like a few of the tracks. But, these days, I stream the majority of my music, it’s just so damned convenient. By a process of elimination, I’ve whittled my streaming services to just one, Apple! You all must enjoy the music whichever way best suits you, but, whatever your chosen methodology, just enjoy the music.

My question is: If I listen via Bluetooth from an iOS or Android phone or tablet or if I listen via a MacBook or a laptop from the headphone jack, is there any difference in sound quality? I know the question may seem odd, but streamed music may sound different depending on the sound card. Is the difference so big that it makes any difference ..? And which source is most musical? Listens mostly via my MacBook Pro here at home. Sincerely
@PaoloMix09
@PaoloMix09 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the DAC. Some Bluetooth even though it isn’t “lossless” will still sound really good. But usually if you’re DAC is capable of lossless and you can run it with Qobuz or Tidal, should probably perform better. Mess around and demo different products to see if you find any improvements.

I’ve had Spotify for a long time and I’ve had tidal for about a year. There is a massive difference between the two if you’re listening on a quality system, there really is no comparison to me. I haven’t tried any of the other Hi-Rez streaming services, but Tidal wipes the floor with Spotify. The only reason I keep Spotify is because of a lot of podcast I listen to and stuff and really it’s not that expensive.

Taking the concept seriously a bit, I consider streaming services of all sorts to be harbingers of the Great Reset. "You'll own nothing and be happy." I've got hundreds of dvds, CDs, and LPs. They take up a lot of space where it is at a premium. Why wouldn't I just want to be able to get it from somewhere else when I want it? But then, what happens if some content is deemed obsolete and you can't find that offensive punk rock from the 70s anymore? My suggestion is still buy and OWN the stuff you want.

I agree. I keep it on my Samsung Note with 1.5 terabytes of memory. It is mine. It is always available. No commercials. XM is nice if it is just background noise and you are not actually listening. For the focused moments it is fun to bust out the old Vinyl and CDs. The key is recognizing that 99.9% of new music is crap and you don't want it. If you are young and you think new music is good, enjoy Pandora and Spotify.
