Streaming has run its course. People are getting tired of content being edited for triggers, or simply not being available. Then to add insult to injury, these services started forcing ads on viewers, ultimately becoming the cable service they were supposed to be replacing.

Maybe this will give you guys hope. I haven't bought a disc of any kind since Ironman 1 released. I went to streaming after that. This past summer I was looking for a tv show that's streamed free forever and found it behind a paywall I don't pay for. I was already paying for 5 paywalls. I got fed up and decided to buy the series. This lead me into how cheap second hand blu'rays are after you've been gone from collecting them for over 14 years. Anyway between a local resale media shop, goodwill, amazon and ebay, lots of buy 2 get one free. Even had a buy 5 get 15 free one time. Sales like that it didn't take me long to pick up over 350 titles mostly at bargain basement prices. I have them up on my wall and they make me happy looking at them. In fact the first day I got my first Blu ray in, my internet went down and I knew I'd done the right thing going back to media. I don't buy anything willy nilly. I stick to my favorites or stuff I wanted to see and just never got around to. I mostly stick to sci-fi, action with a few favorites from other genre's thrown in.

Bold prediction Cotton! You're definitely on to something and I agree. Think we will see physical media make a comeback with more releases, and streaming basically become more like cable. Streaming was a mistake and physical media is the superior format.

Physical media takes up space, digital media doesn’t, there is also the renting method of streaming and you can also buy a movie as well, digitally. I don’t know how physical media is superior, it seems that the digital media is superior because less and less people use physical media.

@@Juninzone - It looks better. - It sounds better. - It has bonuses like special features. - It has a much, much, *much* larger catalogue of films/shows. - It doesn't lag or buffer. - You don't need internet to watch it. - It stays around after purchase, you own it, it won't just vanish on you without warning maybe to never return. - It's safe from alterations like PC edits due to something only now becoming controversial or song's being removed and replaced due to rights changing. - It has nice art, booklet's and other stuff like that. - It gives you the ability to curate your own personal, hand picked selection with only good stuff, nothing bad to shift through or pollute the overall quality of the collection. - they can all be found in one place, many people today need to juggle several streaming services jumping back and forth between them.

I've purchased up to season 9 on Blu ray. I rip them and put them on my Plex server so that I can stream them Netflix-style (personal use only). Even my ripped copies that are compressed and at a lower resolution to conserve space still look much better than their Streaming-service "1080p" equivalent.

Love the new set up! Keep it up! Streaming is teetering for sure. My wife loves the pitch perfect movies. We had to go through 3 apps to find them all and the 3rd one wasn't streaming anywhere, we had to but from Amazon. She doesn't understand my physical media collection, but I can watch whatever I want, when I want. I can pop in Alien Apocalypse or House 3 anytime I want. I don't have to search. Plus, streaming is getting to be as expensive as cable. I agree that all the interfaces suck terribly.

Physical media rules! I use some streaming as well, but there are times where I spend 30 minutes or more searching for something I´d like to see. Sometimes I end going to the room and choosing a Blu Ray I have to put it. That, and the fact you could want to watch something to find out later that it´s out of the catalogue. Or some of the content has been modifyed or "cancelled", getting censured scenes or whole episodes erased for the platform. Add some internet/device connection errors too.

Streaming is terrible. When I had Netflix, they didn't even carry half the movies I have in my DVD collection. Hulu is even worse, I am not getting Disney +, even if it were worth a dollar a month. Disney is the reason why streaming is going out of control and I will not support their crap. I hope physical media comes back in some form. I was born into the world of VHS and am saddened that DVDs are being tossed aside for those horrible streaming services that don't give you everything you want. A cinephile looks for the most hard to find movies that stores will hardly carry and that is the reason why we want physical media to stay.

Been a prophet of this idea for a few years. I have my own Plex server, to make my physical collection easier to manage and to share with family. I host it all, its my files so they arent going anywhere. Streaming sites also have removed all the cool features DVDs once gave. Behind the scenes footage, bloopers, Director commentary, all lost with streaming services. I do wish there was a new, really good physical media player though, with modern options and speeds.

When services started going to yearly subscriptions instead of monthly, to keep people from jumping ship when there's nothing good to watch, people should be able to read the anti-consumer writing on the wall. Couple that with some of these services trying to reinvent cable TV by putting *UNSKIPPABLE ADS* ahead of your selected content... yeah they're getting desperate.

Really? Sure a few like Peacock and Netflix UI is mediocre, but unless you're an idiot, they're not terrible when it comes to UX. Also, your prediction is... well, it's a reach. Disney+ is on track to become profitable in early 2024, with Hulu and ESPN being very profitable (enough that Disney is folding Hulu into Disney+), Apple's sitting on enough cash, that they can tank ATV+ until it becomes profitable (see the AppleTV hardware),, even Paramount is on track to be profitable next year. As much as I'm an avid collector of physical media (specifically games, LDs and LPs), I am not deluded enough to think DVDs/BDs are coming out in anything more than a niche collector centered much (see: Disney's recent MCU D+ releases), it won't be stuff like Willow or the Pink Ladies, as sadly, no one watched them when they streamed, why waste money on shelf warmers.

This honestly seems like wishful thinking to me. People keep complaining on streaming, but they keep ponying up and paying. Yeah, sure, a lot of people will leave it behind, but I don't see the majority going back to physical media, and even if they do, Companies will fight hard to go back to pushing physical media, so it would be later than 2024 if we actually see a return. Sorry to be a debbie downer. I'd love to see physical media come back, but I'm just not optimistic.

Anything else I'm looking for I just go to other streaming sites because I can't be bothered to jump through hoops and sign up for services blindly looking for something. It's $25 to see something in theatres, it's not much cheaper to rent new releases, I can't buy it in store anymore, I can't rent it anywhere anymore... I think they are all in with streaming and must be at least breaking even if not making a profit. I think the plan is to have people transition to all streaming so it is the norm. That plus the manufacturing eco effects of plastics is another agenda they say we need to recycle cut back on etc. People embrace whatevers new whether its better or not. I don't see it, streaming subscription services and their recurring payments are too great an lure for the media companies; they want to force and hook people onto their service, physical media would be seen as an inpediment to that. The resurgance of vinyl is more due to it being old and cool I think, retro chique. In that vein, I could sooner see a resurgance of VHS over DVD.

I've always been into physical media because it's always had the best picture and sound quality. I was into laserdiscs in the 90s because the quality was a lot better than VHS, and VHS didn't have commentaries or supplemental material. Also, a lot of people don't know that DTS and Dolby Digital laserdiscs still, to this day, have by far the best audio quality the consumer can get. It buries Blu Ray and 4K audio because ever since the advent of DVD, consumer media uses what is called a 'Home Mix.' It's a much, much more tame mix compared to what you heard in the theater. Very flat by comparison. Whereas, the sound mix we got on DTS and Dolby Digital laserdiscs was pretty much identical to the theater mixes.

Then repeat the process. I personally download all my movies to my computer. If the source doesn't have that option, I capture it using software, (I use OBS), and save it to my movie hard drive. When I want to do a theme I can queue all the movies I want to enjoy and watch while sitting, surfing the internet, cooking, playing with the dog, etc. If you have DVDs just copy the movies over to your hard drive. Firstly, sweet Plan 9 reference! Secondly, I think the word you were looking for was obsolescence. And finally, Gods, I hope you're right. I'm still trying to snap up DVDs when and where I can. Mostly because the older and more obscure movies are either barely on streaming or will never be picked up for mainstream platforms.

I think physical media's comeback will be bigger than vinyl's streaming is still new, and people are just now realizing some of the drawbacks. You don't have to worry about where you can watch your movie and how long it will be there before it moves to another service. You can still lose your digital copy that you paid to own because of licensing issues like with what happened on sony's digital service. You don't have to worry when you have a physical copy of your movie later being edited for political correctness of the day.

I've decided the word you were looking for was "extant". As in "this movie is now physically extant again." It doesn't fit perfectly without adding "physically" since being on streaming or piracy sites would still count as being in existence.

I have canceled all my streaming services and I am starting my collection. I have an old crt tv that I love watching vhs on but on my flatscreen tv does it matter between dvds and Blu-ray?

Streaming is fast-food for the masses. Physical media is real food. There's approximately 500 000 movies in the world and Netflix has 3600 of them. That is 0.72 %. People need nutritious media and letting a huge corporation decide 100 % of the art and entertainment you consume is just pure madness. Only way I see that streaming could work well is a service that would be the Spotify for movies - a portal that has pretty much everything on-demand. Considering that a proper 4K movie movie is ~60GB in volume, this isn't happening anytime soon. And even if the average consumer internet speed becomes 100x faster, worldwide licencing would be a nightmare.

I vividly remember when The Office was taken off Netflix and everyone was freaking out and wondering how they would watch it and I was chilling with my blu ray set that looks better and has more extras than it ever would on any streming service. It matters guys!

It stinks when a good movie is exclusive to a streaming service. 99% of the time it never gets a physical release. I've resorted to getting some bootleg Chinese copies and I am legitimately surprised as to the quality of them packaging included. Ironically they show up in better condition traveling half way around the world then anytime I order something from Amazon!

I agree, so many times I have looked for a common movie i wanted to watch only to not find it available on the service. I have a good DVD collection myself for this reason. No internet required to watch them. VHS though..those tapes and players are troublesome. I have many still but no good player for them. Walmart seems to be the place for cheap movies. Amazon as well.
