Street Fighter 6 Hot Takes (And What They Tell Us About The Game)

Күн бұрынStreet Fighter 6 is the newest and hottest fighting game out there, but with a hot game comes hot takes! I want to break some of these FGC opinions down to see what they tell us about the state of SF6, and what we should expect in for the future! If Blanka and Marisa can win CEO and Red Bull Kumite, the balance of this game might not be what anyone actually thinks it is.
Sorry for the audio and video quality being inconsistent on this one, had to move my setup 2 times because of wildfire smoke and a heatwave but we're back!

Something people don't realise is usage is not a valuable metric by itself for balancing. Usage in combination with average win percentage is preferred because it allows you to make a 3x3 grid and see if characters win a lot and are overrepresented. And even then, seeing this across multiple leagues is important so you can see if this is a problem across the entire game or only at a certain skill level.

Yupp exactly. So I'm excited for the ranked data to drop next month cuz thats where the juicy data actually is. Usage data just is a popularity contest on its own

@@qmanchualso keep in mind that ranked data is mostly 1 and dones and at best a best 2/3 so gimmicky playstyles do better there than in a 3/5 bracket or ft5 ft10 setting

@vanillafella4893 yeah but most people play ranked so I'd be sure not to conflate it with high level/tournament play. Just look at it for what it is cuz there is a wealth of information there

Additionally, now that the first DLC character for this game has been revealed, hot takes are circulating about Rashid as well. I've seen a lot of people say that he's going to be broken based on about 3 minutes of gameplay footage, which I find ridiculous. There's also been some discourse about Rashid being allowed at Evo, but that's a whole different topic

I've already got my own hot takes about Rashid as well but I'll keep them to myself until we see what goes down! Either way, there's gonna be a lot to unpack when he releases and up till Evo. Can't wait

@@qmanchuol why keep it to yourself? You already know. I don't play SF 6 and I only played the beta and landed in low Diamond.... but I had many hours in Street Fighter 5 with a few characters like Zangief. I could tell before the game was even released that he wasn't going to be good, while everyone was saying how scary he was because they were so hyped about getting a new SF game. I'd understand if Rashid was a completely new character and we didn't know his controls, but that dude is gonna be broken early on. It was just as easy to tell that JP would be one of the stronger characters in the game as well.

People seem to think usage = strength but it's just not true. The more used characters inherently find the advanced tech earlier just because they have more manpower doing the research where as certain characters who are very technical tend to be very under represented. Characters like JP/Sim are extremely easy to get just bulldozed with because they are still figuring out how to deal with drive rush, drive impact, and all the gap closers that are out there. Does that make them non-viable or bad characters? Hell naw JP is super scary and Sim is already showing some strong matchups.

JPs counter does have one answer, projectiles. Beats it outright. Pretty situational though, since the usefulness of that varies based on how good a character's projectiles are

Alright, that's a sub for me. I haven't touched SF since 4 and coming back to the scene having somewhat exploded online over 5's competitive life there's so much new blood I only paid attention to based around EVO showings or theScore's stories about games I don't play. You got some of the most grounded, sensible takes about the state of the game from what I can see. A lot of analytical thinking that doesn't ignore datasets or frame things from being a Juri main or something. Maybe I'm just really introspective myself, but it feels great to find a youtube channel that obviously spends time thinking about what they want to say and isn't clamboring to put out tier lists week after week. Lots of information I hadn't considered that gave me things to think about.

Damn this means a lot! I really appreciate that you see the vision lol I think the FGC is just so saturated with people saying things of little substance AND we have little to no resources that help us make sense of the information we do have. I think we're close to leveling up in that regard though and I'd love to be there at the forefront when we reach the next level. Videos like these feel like the first step

You can use Drive impact and probably Parry to absorb the hit from JPs counter one you get hit. Just look at JPs counter as an OD DP with delayed damage

The issue is he can punish command grabs with it and throws leave you minus. The best case scenario is safe jumping it or using a meaty jab to mitigate recovery frames and still being plus

It's funny that the JP Amnesia section comes immediately after Blanka, because a high-level Blanka showed me you can use the command grab (or any throw, but the long animation of the command grab is good) to put yourself into the throw animation when the move pops so you're immune.

The character data thing, imo it's the exact opposite. In my play history, I notice the least played characters are Dhalsim and Blanka. And the end result is that when I get one, I have a hard time dealing with him. Whereas I've played hundreds of matches agaisnt Cammy or Juri, and have a really good idea on what they can do/what to expect, and how to handle it, I can't react the saem way to the other two. SO in reality, it feels like you're a step up if you paly the lesser used characters.

That's how it was in SFV! Although there's also the fact that popular characters are also bogged down by more people having lower win rates but essentially, on ranked, the least played characters would actually perform better for one reason or another

My hot take is... I *_DON'T_* want to see Drive Reversal buffed.. And think it's in a perfect spot for dealing with certain plus moves and pressure, but not a good option in other cases. Call me doomer, but I see a time if it gets buffed where it needs to be in your mind at times or else it will be a free reset to neutral tool used whenever someone tries to go on the offense.

I agree with this. It's very fast and shuts down lots of pressure. For instance, normals canceled into Drive rush for plus frames. That's a free drive reversal and you're up net 1 drive bar because of it. That's already extremely good

The DBFZ comparison is very apt - especially since, imo JP was Capcom's attempt to make a character that appeals to the 'Anime Fighter' crowd. Unfortunately I think they failed to make a good "Street Fighter style" character because even if high level players can develop tech and counter-play around JP, what you said about him slowing the game down and making it boring is still true - not just for lower ranks, but also for higher ranks that know how to manage the matchup.

My only real hot take with this game is that Juri is so overblown in the tiers. She's definitely good and you can do a lot with her but if you want a better version of her just play Cammy

I think they do different things well. Juri I find to be a lot better at whiff punishing due to her CrMK and StHP ranges, and she also controls the neutral better with ther ground fireballs. Cammy is better against fireball characters and keeping you guessing with the air approach.

JP's counter is an ex DP that loses to fireballs and isn't guaranteed damage when it works.

It's guaranteed against command grabs and big normals, and does much more damage than a DP when it works lol. It's stronger against certain characters than others, that's for certain

lol @ the comment of "I don't play the game BUT here's the changes I would make" is the current FGC in a microcosm. There are just so many spectators who play theory fighter but are still in gold, and because they watch Wed Night Fights or catch all the majors they think they understand high level Street Fighter. I wish players understood how scrubby all this complaining is.

That article is objectively wrong and its an absolute L take, i play akuma in tekken 7 he is bottom 5 , if not lower , in usage. But everyone agrees he is the best character by far, because of how unlimited strong he is when tmax optimized

I agree that it's an L take but if I ever say something is objectively wrong I like to show evidence of such and for this one, I just don't have the numbers yet. But I don't think it'll take long. Also yeah Aluma in T7 is an amazing example. I didn't realize he was that unpopular

"Most popular new characters" Hot take: the base roster is pretty trash and the only reason many people are playing them is lack of alternatives. I don't like a single character in this roster so far, and there are a few people in my local fgc discord who are in the same boat. We are enjoying the game thoroughly in spite of this, which is a testament to the games core design. This roster feels like SF3 New Generation all over again.

@@qmanchu Yeah I saw. It was one of the TNS tourneys, right? He defeated an Honda player in the grandfinals I think. Still though. There is still an underwhelming no of Jamie players in them, let alone do well in them. I can only conclude top players are only playing characters that will give them the best chance to win, obviously. And sadly Jamie isn't one of them, despite how cool of a character he is.

@RemingtonMiles-sr9uf I know you must be joking since Kim is one of only 2 or 3 characters that aren't boring. The others being Jamie and DJ. Juri for example is the most boring character. Juri's strategy is DR sMP sMP cMP repeat. Mix in throw. Cammy is spam lights into spiral arrow, cHP meatie cMP repeat.

Absolute clown show on how fast folks want to make caste systems based on characters people play. Be a cool recurring segment to have on the channel a month after updates like Rashid and other future characters releasing.
