The concept you describe as 'mental stack' actually has a correlate in real psychology (two, actually!): working memory, and cognitive load. Working memory is the fact that you can only attend to and keep in mind a certain amount of information at any one time, analogous to RAM in a computer. Cognitive load is the concept that when working memory is near full use (usually through extra-demanding processing tasks like multitasking or complex problem-solving), performance for each operation slows down and worsens - there's lots of research about how performance at various tasks changes 'under cognitive load', and this is decidedly UNLIKE a computer.

Great video! I always want to see Darkstalkers coverage. I’d also be down for some Rival Schools features since Capcom isn’t going to rerelease the old games so new players know what made them so fun and special.

I have been in scenarios before where I was trying to condition the opponent, but I never knew the full extent of what conditioning is. The topic of diversifying characters' range in SF the way GG doesn't is something that really shows the intricacies of Street Fighter and how the gameplay works. Great video, very educational. P.S If you were to look for a unique game to cover, I would consider Skullgirls. This is because Skullgirls is aggressive in a way that Guilty Gear (and I think Marvel) is not. This is because of how resets are emphasized, and how team sizes are balanced (primarily the former though).

Hey, great video as always! I was wondering if for a next video, you could do something about bad design instead of explaining (wonderfully) why something is good. Like talking about how Maria in EFTF or bowser in Melee just don't work and have a bad design (it can work the other way, bad design isn't neccesarly a unworking bottom tier, it can also be a braindead top tier). I would love to see it, but what I would love the most is that you stay safe, healthy and keep having fun while making those videos!

I think the polar opposite of Guilty Gear would be something like Samuari Shodown. SamSho is almost all neutral game, reading and punishing, and blocking and evading attacks is rewarded. I think Street fighter lands somewhere in the middle of this sliding scale, which I think is neat for the reasons in this video.

Sadly, the reward for blocking has been reduced by the new Guard Crush meter. Now, in order to mitigate the increased reward for aggression, you have to use Just Defend/Instant Block and the Alpha Counter-like mechanic that is only doable after a Just Defend in a game with crap delay-based netcode that makes it difficult to successfully use those mechanics with intention. So, even SamSho has become a bit more offense-focused, like the majority of modern fighting games.

I also think that the means that SF does presentation of the characters also helps give it a wide net. Very relatable characters who are defined in simple things like their profession, fighting style, or nationality. Coupled with the wide range of costumes, it's extremely easy for people to feel a connection with their main. Competitive aspects and depth of gameplay aside, having that sort of appeal to the casual audience can't be dismissed.

1:30 Look, the issue with your previous "Design Excellence" video was not that you praised Guilty Gear, nor that you didn't spend enough time talking about other series. It is that EVERY TIME you did talk about other games in that video, it was to explain why they are not as good as Guilty Gear. That's why it felt like you were selling other fighting games short. Edit: good video, btw.

This was a good watch, and gave me a much stronger appreciation for Street Fighter 5, even if it's still not my favorite fighting game. It also clearly explained why I, an anime fighter fan, drifted so quickly to Rashid. I'm curious as to whether you intend to cover some of the less popular fighting games. Pokken Tournament is one I'm a big fan of and it would be interesting to see your thoughts on the Phase Shift mechanic and how it affects character design and balance, like how Machamp excels in Duel Phase but struggles in Field Phase, Gardevoir does the opposite, but the well-rounded Lucario does well in both but to a lesser extreme.

This was a very intriguing take on Street Fighter, and honestly, makes me appreciate the series more than I do now. Though, since I have a thing for fast-paced fighters, I wonder if you'll do a video on what games like the Darkstalkers or MvC franchises do so well.

I think this video is overall better scripted than the Guilty Gear one; while it's clear now that your goal is to praise a game's strenghts without necessarily stating that it doesn't have weaknesses, in the video on Guilty Gear you sounded very biased. I think the correct direction to take with this series would be how different fighting games appeal to different tastes, which ones do what best, and this video followed this philosophy a lot more, which I appreciated a lot. P.S. I'd love to hear you talk about the way Blazblue designs characters, it's easily my favourite roster out of any fighting game ever

This analyse really ignore the way other FG works (tekken and smash in particular), SF is really not the most deep or complex fighting game franchise out there. IMO tekken is way more about conditioning due to the large moveset, and Melee as infinite mix up for a single interaction. Where SF is the most unique imo, is in the meter management, chars can have very different gameplan depending on how many bars they have. Thats why i love SF.

I feel like “less is more” is an odd approach to a competitive game in the age of concurrent player metrics and internet guides. It works absolute wonders for casual play and arcades (hence the success of SF2), but I feel SF (even pre-SFV) is more carried by the brand than the merits of individual games.
