We experience true Mauritian hospitality as we eat biryani and roti at a local place in Vallée des Prêtres, the valley of the priests. Hot fluffy rice, soft succulent chicken, and awesome potato you can't get better. The roti, fresh and hot of the grill, was magical with bean curry and tomato rougaille. My mouth is watering as I write this, it was so good.
We stopped off in the village after a hike up the mountain and were starving. The uncle of the vendor invited us to come into the tent at the back and we couldn't say no. The smell of fresh food being cooked lead us in by our noses, almost cartoon-like. He called it the restaurant in the sky, but it has another name, please let us know in the comment. The views of the mountain were great, but when we started eating we hardly notice.
Riki demonstrated the correct way to get at the biryani, sometimes written briany in Creole. Then the uncle brought us some plates which made it easier. They gave me a spoon of valley chili sauce, and it was the second hottest chili I had eaten in Mauritius, but with a great flavour.
After enjoying the biryani while watching the chef professionally cooking up the rotis I had to try it, even though I was full. The roti was fantastic, a standard Mauritian roti made to perfection and it was delicious. They kindly gave Riki a plain roti to take home and they bagged some extra chili and tamarind sauce for me.
Most of the time heading off to one of the smaller villages for a street food experience is the best, and this was no exception. Somehow everything tastes better. But the real reason you want to head out to the slightly unknown places is the hospitality and the friendliness of the locals. To get the whole real Mauritius experience does not cost much and is worth a lifetime of memories. This is a must-do in Mauritius.

Very nice and genuinely hospitable people. However in my opinion, the most authentic biryani can only be found in the Plaine Verte area of Port Louis, especially on a Saturday night. Try the beef biryani, next time you're in the area.
