Do you really need to stick to a small fixed focal camera to do street photography? Do you need to be in that one perfect spot to take that perfect picture. I think that the answer to both of these questions is a plain flat no. This video looks at why
The streets of Quebec city
I just went out in the streets of Quebec city to see what was out there and two things blasted my mind real good. I don't need to be in the big city to get great street photography. Street photography is really everywhere. Street photography is a lot about your ability to be candid and also catching moments that are not staged and real. What you need in a city is people, the rest is just not that important. It is like saying that you cannot take a portrait without having a backdrop.
I am not a street photography purist
I find it so funny that many of the street photography purists say that you have to shoot with a fixed focal small camera to be a legitimate street photographer. It is based no the premise that one MUST be in the action when taking the candid or street photo. This is something that I tried to adapt initially in my workflow but found it to be paralyzing for my personality. I just find that getting into another person's comfort zone doesn't work for me. Primarily because it makes me uneasy. The second reason why is that I feel that the candidness of a shot is directly proportional to the distance you are from the subject. The further you are away from someone, the better it is to get that totally natural shot. If a subject does not know that they are getting a picture taken of them, the less they will have a tendency to pose or tell you to leave.
Do not blame the subject
Also, that I really like It also got me to thinking that it would be good to start working on a series about how one should not blame their subject for a bad picture. Since my finances are not amazing, it might be a good idea to think about working on a series where I restrict myself to my hometown and no where else. I am lucky enough to be in a place where there is already a great deal of natural beauty so it might not be as hard as it seems.

My family and I visited Quebec in Oct 2018 just as the trees changed to autumn colours…it is a beautiful city. I was delighted to see so many familiar places in your video. The one thing we neglected to do was to kidnap a local and force them to guide us around the sights…next time watch out. The drive (off-motorway) to Montreal was breath-taking at every twist in the road along the river. You are very fortunate to have such a place to call home. Looking forward to more FZ2500 stuff and more Quebec views. Regards from Dublin.

Great shots Jake!! I DO THE SAME THING and think I get better shots because I can really grab people from a distance and not influence the vibe of the moment by being in their space ; )

I just ordered a Nikon P1000 and came across this video of yours while looking for ideas. Hoping your talents will show somewhat more of what's possible with zoom street photography.

Great video Jacques. I sit, watch and dream of going to all these wonderful locations that some youtube photographers go to and sometimes it gets me frustrated and I wish I could afford it as well and don't get me started on camera gear I suffer from FUJI envy and would love to PX my Nikon 300d.

What are your thoughts on the FZ2500’s still image quality. I keep hearing the Sony and even the FZ1000 are much better. Some say the lens on the FZ2500 is substandard. Your thoughts?

I totally agree. They wanted to stretch the zoom range and it was a big mistake. For stills, stick to the RX line. Here is the full review I did on the FZ2500. You can Fast forward to the end of the video with my conclusions: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p618oNFerc7FZJ8.html I might also do a video on the whole concept of the Superzoom and why I think bridge cameras should have less of a zoom range and more Image quality. I also own the Canon G7X mark2 and, although not for the same market, I am always amazed at the picture quality out of that thing. hope this helps

Jacques, did you worry about getting a model release (6:44) for street photography? I'm not sure what the "street photography" rules are these days. On another note, what's NOT exotic for one person's location is exotic for another. In other words, "change" can be an inspiration. (Or...."One man's trash is another man's treasure. LOL) But you're right. There's more than enough "subjects" to shoot in your own back yard to last several lifetimes.

I agree that mere change can actually be the inspiration

I've recently come to the same conclusion: Don't be contemptuous of the familiar. Get out and shoot it. It will serve to improve the photography muscle memory in the photographer, so that if a trip is taken to the unfamiliar, the awe factor of its newness will not be too distracting of the process. Plus, you will be making something out of nothing out of what is most abundant, the familiar.
