I trained with a too-heavy wall hanger in my youth to the point that I could swing a nearly 10 lb sword one handed at almost the speed I did with two hands. If you're maximum overstrong, you just get a more intensely fuckoff sized blade and go ham with that instead. I dunno, I feel like that probably doesn't work as well as it sounds like it could, but what do I know? I've never fought w/ a sword.

@@brandonogden3498 While that can definitely be helpful, if you get too accustomed to the extra weight, sometimes it can actually make it harder to control a normally weighted blade for proper technique. I doubt it'd be quite as pronounced in HEMA, but I once accidentally whipped my friend's hand with a foil after six months of epee fencing because I was used to using three times as much force to move my blade around. General principle probably still stands.

"Strength is speed" ah man its good to hear these words. I think in fiction, and games, and among people who partake in those things, there's something of a widely accepted false dichotomy of strength vs speed. Or strength vs dexterity. Or strength vs skill. Games have especially perpetuated this though usage of character statistics and attributes re-enforcing it in a concrete manner, but I think the idea has been around for longer than that. I feel like on average, if you give somebody a matchup between some big strong brute looking person, and a smaller more "skillful" looking person, they're going to bet on or at least root for the smaller guy. It's just, like, basic underdog storytelling going back as far as David and Goliath. More recently, its nerd vs jock. And guess who plays video and tabletop games and reads fantasy novels. Or did, anyway, in the more formative years of those mediums.

Well - in a way it is not wrong. Look at BodyBuilders - they could very well be described as having high strength but low stamina, dex and agi. it is still fun to remember when i was joining some gymnastics class in their outdoor training and they had 2 body-builders there. Big muscles, big mouths and talked about how much stronger and fitter they are. After just a few minutes of light warmup they were already panting, and they couldn't keep up at all at the obstacle course. "strongest man" contests also show this. they are insanely strong, but that comes at the cost of having a lot of muscle mass that slows them down.

To be fair, although in this case the dichotomy is obviously wrong; there are surprisingly many related cases, in which there IS a dichotomy between "power" and "speed". In unarmed martial arts for instance, stronger guys are generally slower than people with less muscles (and therefore mass). Or when choosing a design for a sword: More mass at the top means more cutting ability but less nimbleness of the blade. If you compare different moves (both armed and unarmed) you can see the dichotomy again (to some extent): A Zornhau has more power than a more normal cut, but it's obviously more telegraphed, therefore slower. A jab has more reach than a hook and is therefore "faster" than a hook in some sense (the concept of speed is generally pretty messy), but it's weaker. So it is not that surprising that this dichotomy was thought of and then falsely connected to instances where this relation doesn't apply, or even the opposite is true.

Training in a combat style does not always increase your strength beyond a certain level, it may increase your stamina, but at some point you will reach the strength needed for your particular style and will not be working the muscles hard enough without additional strength training. You could, for instance, increase the weight of the sword you are using every few weeks, but eventually you'll end up swinging a club just to increase your strength rather than to improve your technique. Raw physical power could be useful that one time you need to flip a heavy table over to hide behind but do it one handed, or kick a door shut in someones face or whatever.

Nice to see Skall being the voice of reason. That point about overcorrecting myths is spot on; it's so incredibly frustrating how often that happens! As for strength training: the thing is, fighting is athletic. Strength is a fundamental element of physical fitness, and therefore, someone with no development of their strength base would definitely be well served by getting stronger. Beyond a certain point, it won't matter anymore, but I guarantee you, 99% of people really don't even have that base level of strength nowadays. Strength matters in a lot of ways that are way beyond the scope of a youtube comment, so I won't get into it, but I will say that often in these discussions people focus only on the sword and not on their own body. If you are stronger in relation to your bodyweight than you were before, you are able to more easily adjust your positions and potentially even move faster. Great video!

I am 6'6", back in my younger days size and strength made up for lack of skill on quite a number of occasions when it got rough in the pub, I think that, as Skal said really, given two equally skilled people the stronger one has an advantage and in many situations that extra strength could help you survive if you were not quite as skilled as your opponent. Seems obvious to me, as it's a lot easier to build strength than it is to become a combat expert why would you not train both anyway? Being strong won't hinder you in almost any physical activity, so be as strong as you can while also training in your chosen martial art.

It depends on the individual and their genetics (as well as other factors of course). For me it has been a lot easier to develop technical skills than to build strength, but I've seen guys who are naturally large framed and muscular despite not even lifting. Either way you're right, training to become stronger is never a bad idea. It helps in everyday life and especially in martial arts.

popuptoaster my thoughts exactly, I always think it's best to be able have a healthy balance between strength and skills from training, especially when you do need strength to make the technique or move as effective as its suppose to be, I.E. a punch, a knee strike, a kick, a slash, lunge, or cut. Granted I don't exactly have good strength myself, 5'10" and 142 pounds, but I do still work on both strength training, such as use of weights push ups pull ups etc, and technique training, doing the same move over and over again and refining it to help feel natural and be capable in the long run, or work on both at the same time.

I think there is another misconception about strength, in the idea of "overall strength", versus the understanding that each muscle group has its own qualities, and that having strength in the muscle groups where you need it is priceless and having strength in muscle groups you're not using can actually slow the others down. A great example is the gym rat, who has stacks of muscle across his shoulders and arms, but lacks the core strength to exercise good balance; or someone who can bench press 500lbs but whose wrists and hand don't have the strength to impose an effective grapple on an opponent. The "strong swordsman" may not LOOK strong, compared to the body builder. But his strength has been developed by using the muscles he needs, and so it the exact sort of strength he needs. He will be able to accelerate his blade in both offense and defense, more rapidly and with less total effort than others, granting him both striking power and precision.

Absolute strength increases all athletic pursuits linearly. Strong people can still have good techniques and its better to have strength than not. In life and not just fighting. At some point, you reach a point where more muscles would just impede your movements, flexibility and speed. Thats why you would never see bodybuilders in things such as Athletism or swimming. Athletes aims for the perfect point where they can have a maximum output of strength without a muscle-mass to important which would impede the rest. Especially in the armed martial arts or the eastern martial arts, people assume that Im slower, or brutish, or bullish, but fail to recognize that the stronger you are the harder and faster you can move, as long as your level of skill is commensurate with your level of strength. If your technical ability is too far below your strength then you have a tendency to try and muscle through everything like a white belt in BJJ, but a 150lbs black belt will almost always lose to a 210lbs black belt.

As a strong man, I have a few points to add. I think being stronger is a big advantage for a few reasons not mentioned in the video. first: being strong makes more devastating, armor penetrating weapons much easier to use without getting fatigued. There are many times when its mentioned that a 15lbs war hammer or battle axe is fatiguing to use, meanwhile I am thinking that weighs almost nothing (please understand I understand bio-mechanics and the effect of distance on a lever including that the force is multiplicative; I still think its light). Second, strength allows for more coordination with heavier implements. Lifting is a coordinated movement. A strong man can move very heavy weight in a very coordinated manner, lighter weights, as mentioned in the video, get speed and power benefits. Third, strength allows you to move faster in Armour, some of the weights usually mentioned for armor, distributed evenly over the body, are seriously negligible for people with superior levels of strength. When a lifter dumbell curls 50lbs and the arm is relatively far from the body and the force is concentrated in one place, its much more extreme than 100lbs shared among all muscle groups. Essentially, strength equated to quickness and the ability to use more devastating weapons. It is not a substituted for training and knowledge, however, it is clearly an advantage and not a disadvantage.

Blunt impact weapons are a good example of where strength really matters. I have been thinking about this alot and i want some other opinions. Do you think you could defeat an unarmed 420lbs/200kg strongman with an armingsword? With a knife? Even with a longsword? Personally i think any normal fighter would get 1-2 shots in before they charge you into the ground effortlessly and smash you. Same thing with MMA fighters. You have to acknowledge that there is a diffrence between a knife and a sword, and there are diffrences between individuals. In my case, yes Bones would probably kick my ass and beat me if I used a knife, he's got freaky range and athleticism. Against a sword though... Come on man, if he lifts his foot you chop that shit off. There is a reason why punching and kicking is uncommon in HEMA, extending an unarmored limb is usually a dumb thing to do. As with getting charged by a 200 kg strongman... no doubt they could charge you, but unlike the Hulk, they are Humans with real emotions, getting stabbed brought the chest probabably hurts like an absolute bitch and getting your skull split is probably more than enought to halt most people in their tracks. Modern day strongmen are strong, fantastic atheletes, but they are humans, they feel pain and they bleed. The whole point of weapons is to minimized this diffrence in strenght.

My best hope would be to score a close to instant lethal hit or cause so much pain that they could not continue (something i think would be difficult to do as they would be full of adrenaline and they are used to ignoring pain).

@ThePijarro 5 жыл бұрын
Yes these scenarios exist, but come on.. We can't serisouly expect this to be anything but the most rare of cases. You chopping the arm of an unarmored mma fighter is probably going to cause such physical and psychological trauma I doubt he is going to keep trying to kill you. And a strongman with a spear through his chest is most likely also not going to keep attacking. These are modern day athletes not hardened soldiers of old, who are accepting as a part of their job: physical injuries of the type medieval and ancient combat could cause. Mma fighters give in to kicks and punches(mentally that is before the ref steps in) , most tap before their arms snap, the few that have their arms broken in armbars tab imidiatly after their arms break. And I think getting your leg cleaved of is something more akin to having your leg blow off In modern warfare rather than pushing a joint in the opposite direction. Let's consider Silva vs Weidman 2, Anderson broke his shin, snap. The thing broke into two pieces, he layed down and screamed, looked utterly fucking terrible. I would 100% have reacted the same way. Now imagine it was cut off: blood squirting out, you can your foot on the floor and it hurts as much if not more than breaking it... Even if in some tough scenario, adrenaline stops the pain, the sight alone should be enough to fuck you up. I do not believe most people, normal guys and gals like us, professional athletes and even most trained soldiers would keep on fighting. Heroic exceptions are not the rule.

I've had a debate over the matter of strength in sword fighting within fantasy. He found it hard to believe that a female warrior could wield an average sword, and I argued how could a male warrior possibly wield those massive swords that are 5 times the size of the man. His argument was that they have super strength, and it's fantasy and there's magic to make the swords much lighter than they seem. Funny how anyone could use the argument of fantasy and magic to justify a man wielding a sword fit for a giant, but find it so hard to believe a woman could carry a sword that would weigh at least 2.5 pounds.

While a woman in said fantasy, may not have superhuman strength. That said the idea a woman can't use an average blade effective is stupid, They wouldn't be as fast as their male counterparts, nor as strong(Which both matter alot.), But the blades themselves are very light. Hell bows use more strength than a sword and their the defacto fantasy weapon for women. Kind of humorous on that contradiction.

@@theworstcatholic7247 By the way... the reason that the misconception exists is because of qualities associated with marksmenship that came up in stories as old as Tolkien's writings, which is where dungeons and dragons comes from, which was what directly inspired game and fantasy lore like final fantasy. Elves were seen as a nimble and sleek race of people, they focused on archery because it was safer for them to kill from a distance than to engage in combat with a race that was physically larger than them, often physically stronger and possessed more stamina. Not to say that they couldn't. Also, young women are very adept at archery even in modern day. It doesn't take a very high draw weight for a bow to be effective at 60 yards. On average women are better marksmen because of the center of balance that they have. A great example of a current female marksmen is Kim Rhode who was an Olympic competitor that has several medals to her name. Giving a young woman a bow or a cross bow makes a lot of sense. You can be strong enough to pull back a bow string and aim well enough to be effective while still lacking the physical stamina to engage in a sword fight. I've shot archery competitively since before my age was in the double digits and did fairly well at the state level. You can in fact be weak and use a bow better than you can use a sword, strength will allow you to wield a bow with a greater draw weight that is more dangerous. You can still have a person that is a fantastic archer, pulls a draw weight of say a hundred pounds, excellent accuracy but still doesn't have the physical stamina to defend themselves with a sword. It may be helpful to look for the roots of misconceptions rather than just making fun of the fact that they exist, some of them have some actual basis in fact that is being misinterpreted.

Thank you for addressing the strength-speed equivalence. It always bothers me, especially in games and shows, where the wiry character always out-speeds the more brutish looking one. Have you seen Olympic sprinters? You want speed, you need strength. There is *some* validity to say they're not perfectly equivalent. The nervous system plays a big part in every movement (for obvious reasons), and fast, explosive movements require some degree of conditioning the nerves to get used to the movement, just as much as developing the muscles to exert enough force to do it. That's why it's still important to train speed/power differently from normal strength training - not for the muscles, but for the nerves.

It takes significantly more force to accelerate a larger (read: more massive) body at the same rate as a less massive body. If you have the energy to spare, however, size is a benefit. For pure speed, ie running in a straight line; strength is definitely king. As you pointed out though, its focused in certain places. Olympic Sprinters are very strong, but they don't look like bodybuilders. As for wiry small folks being fast, its more of a misrepresentation. It's not that they aren't fast, but its a different type of fast. Just look at Jackie Chan, graduates of chinese acrobat schools, and pretty much all gymnasts or even rock climbers. Having a light body allows you to get a much better power to weight ratio and perform amazing acrobatic feats. So, its more a matter of larger guys have higher power, while the smaller guys have power to weight ratio.

Interesting points. I think there is something to be said for the idea that it is possible to apply more strength than your form can handle, especially if you are a beginner to intermediate practitioner. I think this is true in all kinds of endeavors, such as weight lifting or even playing an instrument, and not just limited to martial arts.

I agree with your statement at 6 minutes in so much. As a huge person, the ability to make an effective strike without much dedication is something I consider to be one of my biggest advantages. This also allows me to launch effective attacks while in the middle of other attacks with ease as I don't have to dedicate as much to attacks or defenses.

The thing is that in a lot of games and stuff, there is a strength stat and dexterity stat and I think that is why a lot of people (me included) think that is you are fast you can't be strong and stuff.

If you ever revisit this topic in another video. The analogy of a dual swordsman would be really useful. Seeing as one's dominate had will produce more strength in your blows, verses the sword in your not dominate hand, producing less strength. Yet even so, people are still able to use two swords effectively, at the same time, shows how important both strength and technique are when using both swords. Most of the time in dual wielding, your strong dominate hand is use only for blocks (or offense designed to create an opening), and your less dominate hand to land blows (mostly stabs so you don't need a whole lot of strength).

Hope this is seen but it makes sense if it isn't. Skallagrim, would you do a video on scythes in combat? Im not just looking at fantasy when it comes to this because many farmers would use scythes as improvised weapons in battle. I was curious how effective they really were and if you could do a video on them. Also if you could give insight on the best ways to use a scythe against a one handed or two handed swordsman that would be cool. Love your videos and ill keep watching.

I consider your programs interesting and wish I was younger so as to try the programs; however, as an old man, first rule of an old man in a knife/sword/blade fight is bring a gun! Keep pushing-on; interesting study; caused me to order inner-library loans on classical reference tomes and read.

Hundred percent true. I've actually noticed this significantly with my various different lightsabers and lightsaber hilts. I was always pretty fast with 1 handed sabers and decently fast with a two handed saber. After putting on some muscle, in the gym and training more with my two handed sabers I have no issue now using my two handed sabers as a one handed. Because of this when I do switch back to my one handed sabers the speed is doubled from what it once was to the point I barely notice the one handed sabers weight and im now comfortable transitioning from a one handed style to a two and back with the extra weight of a two hander when I used to feel the extra effort it would take to do so.

Actually had a thought about fighting strong people during HEMA sparring yesterday. A couple of the newer moving into intermediate students are over 6ft and fairly athletic. I'm 5'9''. Stopping their overhand strikes has given me difficulty because my guard had to be solid enough that they didn't just blow through. But keeping the guard solid also kept me from stealing momentum and rolling into a quick counter the way I wanted against attacks with follow through.
