This video lesson provides a detailed explanation of stress in the English language. Stress is the emphasis placed on a syllable in a word or a word in a sentence. Stress can occur at the word and sentence level performing two major functions which are: distinguishing meaning/grammatical class and emphasizing words for special effect. This video also explains how to determine the syllable that receives stress in a given word. Concepts such as root word, stress shift, and compound words are explained to aid the understanding of stress in English.

One word has only one stress. Two stresses cannot be one word. It is true that there can be a "secondary" stress in some words. But a secondary stress is much smaller than the main [primary] stress, and is only used in long words.
