Children have generally become so inflexible, it’s scary… Parents need to encourage their children to do some stretching exercises-once a week in PE lessons is not enough!

@InsulinRunner nope, and I first got them early last year at 32 years old and 240lbs. I'm down to 180 lbs now. Crazy year. No, no spots, ball, no nothing. I learned some kicks too.

@Elijahgavi on my channel, I have a few mobility videos. I mostly did the straddle position and the half split and just held them for a long time . But I think that you ought to check those out because until I learned the 90 90 and the cosak sqout from LBP, my progress on my splits had stagnated. But once I incorporated some mobility, I had them. I believe that you can, too 🙂👍

Thank you for talking about connective tissue disorders, stretching, and the potential hazards! As an hEDS-er, I never understood why people hated stretching until I spent three years nearly sedentary after doing ballet, yoga, and Pilates for nearly 25 years. When I learned that stretching muscles feels different stretching joints during movement recovery, I immediately got why stretching is labourious. Hypermobile friends, try stretching with your joints bent instead of in 'normal' extension or hyperextension; chances are that you'll feel those muscles stretch for the first time in a long time. David, you're the real deal, my dude! Thanks for doing what you do.

As a dancer who’s had over-splits for yrs, he’s right 🔥 u rly don’t need to stretch every day, I honestly stretch once, maybe twice a week. It is intense tho ngl. I do around 2 mins total per stretch, but yea it’s about 30 seconds in a max range position (so I take around 90 seconds to ease myself toward that max range in increments to avoid injury)

I was detoxing form opioids my Dr gave me and the only relief I had was stretching. I could chose the pain of stretching or the pain of detox. About 2 months later I felt so much better. It saved my life and now getting stuff of the floor isn't so hard anymore.

Remember that dynamic eccentric work makes you extremely sore, so I'd keep that to a minimum if you want to feel good throughout the week. Passive stretches or isometric contractions are less fatiguing.

The main difference imo is that you can get better at stretching by increasing volume and frequency almost indefinitely while bodybuilding (strength training and hypertrophy) has steep diminishing returns after a certain point. Also I think bodybuilding is more of a long term venture, whereas stretching probably takes a lot less time to maximize your flexibility. As in, depending where you start, you can’t get much more flexible after 10 years of stretching than you can in your first year or less.

I hear a lot of people in the fitness community saying e-centric for eccentric, and I wonder where that originated. Anyway, another great demonstration of how to train flexibility and improve movement.

I think it's a way to differentiate tonally between the two meanings of the word; Off center, or "ex-centric" vs. centers moving apart, as with the muscle insertion points getting further apart in that portion of the rep, which lots of people like to call "E-centric" it seems. I think it's a lot like in the firearms and game community where people will say "Carbyne" or "Carbean" to refer to that type of rifle. Language is flexy like that.

I just wanna point out that pretty sweet lat spread for your frame. We recently added flexibility training to our roster between bodybuilding and MMA; The extra mobility and strength at extended ROM is already proving useful in grappling and kicking/checking. Honestly it's not terribly difficult to see flexibility gains pretty quick if you're new to it.

BUT DAVID! There's a new barefoot company named Otishi that just started in my area and showed up at our fitcon last weekend. They're basically socks and made specifically for working out. Of note: new research has shown that doing weight lifting sets all the way to failure is not necessary for hypertrophy, and might actually be suboptimal. Time under tension is more important than failure. It might be better to do 10 sets a week to 1-2 RIR (reps in reserve) than 5-6 sets to failure (which would be RIR 0, since you're leaving nothing in reserve). Some body builders actually say they do as little as 3-4 RIR for most their sets, and this seems to vary per person. I personally see the best results going to 1-2 RIR on most sets, finishing each workout by taking my LAST set to failure. You might also encounter the term RPE (rate of perceived exertion), which inversely correlates with RIR. An RPE is the same as RIR 0, RPE 9 = RIR 1, RPE 8 = RIR 2, etc. Same idea, different terminology. Either way, the most current research seems to suggest that taking every rep to failure isn't best practice. Occasionally going to failure (often the last set of your workout for the day) seems to be a good idea, but not every set.

the big difference between going to failure and stopping short is recovery time. When I went to failure on every set, I was only able to do 6-8 sets per week due to soreness. Now, I can hit a dozen sets without a problem, because I'm not quite hitting that failure point more than once or twice a week. That's a LOT more time that my muscles are under tension.

The problem with deadlift is that is dangerous to the spine, but that's only if you don't do it properly. Using the right amount of weight, and with proper form, the exercise not only will not hurt you, but you strength the muscles so you can do moves similar to it without risk of injure.

Keep in mind going failure to often imposes a lot of fatigue and will cause you to build less muscle than if you went just shy of failure (3-1 reps) and by going just shy of failure and you can pit in more volume and higher quality volume

Hey I have a question. I'm actually quite hyper mobile but my hamstrings are way too short. You said that you should keep your stretches pain free, but even the smallest stretches involving my hamstrings are pure pain. Even if I'm sitting with my legs laying in front of me and trying to sit with a straight back (which isn't possible which I learned from you) is pain. So I wouldn't even know how to avoid it. But I'm making good progress. Any advice?

I’m 63 yrs old. I’m a former college athlete and former high school and college basketball official. I’ve been active my entire life and would always stretch before calling games. But I have never been very flexible. At my age, will my muscles stretch and will i be able to increase my flexibility, or is it too late in life to hope for any meaningful results?

Stretchy is better than baggy, IMO. because baggy often doesn't have stretch and you need to adjust the fabric so it doesn't catch and restrict your movement. (Like a karate gi for example, baggy, but actually quite restrictive when trying to do deep stances) Good stretchy (flexy ;)) pants that move with you are more comfy!

Stretching elongates the muscle which means it's weakening the muscle because when a muscle is lengthened under force (stretching) means the muscle is pulled away from it's insertion point. This is the opposite of the desired outcome of lifting which is to contract the muscle (flexing) because the muscle is being contracted under the load. Flexibility has nothing to do with stretching, someone is flexible via movement, like performing a sports movement, but simply standing static stretching simply elongates the muscle and that same person could still be not flexible, Flexibility is derived from movement and function but your confusing people telling them that the more they stretch, the more flexible they will become, and that's simply false.

Correction, he is quite strong in position weightlifters would fail at. And he can do one arm pushups pretty easily. He trains for strength in weights and calisthentics not muscle size so of course he wouldn't be having massive muscles, but still having the strength. But you are right about not getting muscle size like this if that's what you desire in working out, but stretching is still amazing for being healthy and can even help in doing a lot of calisthentics and prevent muscle tears in weightlifting.
