Ranging from tigers to jellyfish to dolphins! Kids thrive on routine, boundaries, rules, and discipline. And consistency in all of them.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I’m one of 9 and my parents were what you call strict parents now days but actually what they gave us was routine, boundaries, rules and discipline, endless love, compassion and kindness. They weren’t our friends but our parents and we all turned out well and grounded! Now that am a parent myself I appreciate and respect how they raised us. I love them for the kind of parents they were. Children definitely need rules and discipline to thrive.

I don’t think the words “soft, harsh, mean, pushover” are the right words to describe parenting. Actually disciplining isn’t about being harsh, it’s about controlling the situation. Sometimes that means knowing your kids well and managing their bad emotions well, not just shouting and being stern.

Yes many of us are too soft when it comes to parenting; and I include myself in that. I have to really work hard at times to stick to my guns, my son has an answer for everything; and also we need to not be worried that we might not be our child's 'best friend' for a while, but it's hard when we have a close friendship with our child ...
