Not only was it helpful, it was brilliant! I appreciate this both as a music teacher and a student at the RCM of Canada. The way in which you layer the development by building upon increasingly more complex harmonies while supplementing the melodic development is inspired.

I know what you mean--I was 63 once myself. Just a kid with a dream. But at 73, I've pretty much gotten over the idea that that's old or that age, per se, is an obstacle to anything. Sixty-four is a really good age to knuckle down and start getting on with things. Like Music! Yeah! When you and I were kids, we didn't have anybody like Kent to help us out with this stuff; now we have. Talk about lucky!

Pretty much the most amazing lesson I've come across for stride piano. I've learned so much from Kent's videos but this really takes the cake. Especially while I'm reading WAIL, the biography of Bud Powell. This video really adds a lot to my practice times where that book leaves off!

Thank you very much Kent…! I loved this video…! My Great Grandma played stride piano so well, I’d love to learn this style as I love it and I have a very fond early memory of her playing our very “honky tonk” but beautiful piano. Could you expand on pieces or repertoire to play in stride style…? Could you give a list of one or two pieces besides Scott Joplin and rags…? Or great stride players to listen to…? Thank you so much…!!! Love from 🇬🇧😊

Beautiful lesson Kent! You give such a clear demonstration of how you can progress starting from one note to building up harmonies and octave/tenths stride movements. For me as a beginner, its a really slow process and it’s hardest to wrap my head around inverting chords, dropping notes, removing notes, altering notes, or just shifting the basic structure from 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 when building notes and thinking about voice leading. I still feel like I’m at a point where I need to shift my pinky down a half step to find the b9, and it’s already too late. I feel like I’m making too many calculations! Starting with a simple line cliche like in this progression, it helps to understand the voicings and that they shouldn’t always be with a root as lowest note in bass. You also had me an enlightening moment going from the C chord to the E7. I tend to automatically think of octave or tenths relative to root note. If I see E7, I think E G# B D / 1 3 5 b7 voiced in that order, right now it takes too much time for me to then rearrange or alter those intervals. It started to make sense seeing the chromatic movement in your excellent progression that a 10th could also start from the 3rd or 5th relative to its root. 🙈🙌❤️

I've been wanting to play music in this style for a while now, but I didn't know what it was called! I just saw a video that referred to the style as 'stride' and so I searched stride and it led me straight to your turorial. Thank you very much!

I'm glad you found me. I'm not an authentic stride player ...there are a few on KZfaq. At one time I could play Joplin. Glad you liked it.

Yeeee this is great stuff ! I learned guitar pretty well via KZfaq tutorials so I like to think I have an eye for a quality bit of learning material, anyway, I started playing piano this year in much the same way and I think your lesson here is solid gold ! 🍻

Dear Kent, thank you very much for this exercise. It was very helpful, in particular to see how one can develop the technique from the simple version to a fuller one. Also, I think the exercise is the right length (not long) to keep one motivated and focused.

This is an excellent tutorial, thanks for posting this - the level is just right for me. I've wanted to learn some stride piano after dabbling with some Scott Joplin rags as a kid. The sheet music download is also great, although I feel I should learn these by heart to really benefit. Thanks again!

Thanks, Chris, I'm glad you find the exercise useful. It's always best to memorize at least some of your music. Best way to really get good at this is to learn some Joplin rags and develop your concepts and technique with "the real thing".

@@KentHewittpiano88 serious question do a lot of people have trouble playing tenths? I have small hands and it’s impossible for me to stretch that far. Will tenths as broken chords suffice?

For all who are keen on learning the technique of stride piano, you gotta first know that this requires a very good understandingof harmonic principles. This technique starts off like swing but it doesn't end there. Instead, it progresses on to subtly obscuring the rhythm style but yet supporting time signature & harmony. Also, this requires broad left hand chords to keep the changes. I must say very very few players use this technique nowadays. Oscar Peterson, Teddy Wilson, Hank Jones are some of the authority in this technique. Go search their solo recordings on this technique.
