You know, the pre-Saiga 12 days are amazing to me. The amount of effort into just making a functional semi-auto shotgun, and without a tube magazine. And then the Russians just slap a box mag into an AK, and it works so much better.

As a bit of an expert on the saiga 12 itself, that's not really an accurate representation at the development.
@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS 4 жыл бұрын
Continue since I didn't actually mean to post that comment yet. the saiga 12 initially was just an AK with extra room made for ejection port and a larger barrel in a larger magwell and all that stuff. interesting ly they started with the better straighten certain magazine and downgraded to the rock and lock because that's what American market thought an AK should be. The problem was most first guns barely worked. They were so finicky about ammo. eventually they did some tuning with gas Port size and the big change was ditching the AK long stroke piston system and replacing with a tappet system. After they put in the tappet the guns worked. But they still had a limited range of animal that they worked with. the next development was put in a 2 position gas restrictor. that made them work with virtually everything so long as you got a gun that was assembled properly. these were refined by the American competitive market and improved a lot and some of those changes eventually made their way back into the izhmash guns as well as the Molot clones. Oddly their flagship model which is now closest to the Iz433 series prioritize in AK style rear sight block and removable gas tube in the process of incorporating that they removed the gas setting restrictor, which is a real down grade. The vepr 12 is cloned from that variant and originally shipped with the saiga-12 "police" magazines. For that reason the veprs also lack the gas restrictor.

In the early nineties I lived in the centre of Johannesburg then regarded as the murder capital of the World. I acquired the South African ARMSEL PROTECTA model that you mentioned for use in situations such as car hijacking and CQB for which it proved it invaluable. In a Country where the Police advised Citizens not to stop at red traffic lights at night outside the city centre it was comforting to have the Protecta sitting safely on the floor between the seats. The 90 deg. pivot of the front grip was quick and positive and I never had any kind of malfunction when using a mix of buckshot or slugs. At that time I also used the 9mm BXP machine pistol also a Rhodesian design produced in South Africa (No review yet ?) and the Stechkin

Most important was compactness together with high capacity. Then it was of a very simple mechanical (non gas) design very easy to maintain and repair if necessary. For usage, it comfortably operated at the shoulder aim position or from the hip stance. Finally, in my experience, the gun was totally reliable and a great confidence booster.

Funny thing is that in the US at least, it is constitutionally legal to own "destructive devices". There was an actual case where a shipping merchant sent a letter to James Madison asking if he could put cannons on his ship to protect him from pirates and state navies that didn't recognize the US and Madison said it was perfectly fine.

@@Gnarfendorf this seems like bait but hey, I'll bite. What makes this worse than any other semi-automatic shotgun, or any other shotgun for that matter? People who want guns like this banned largely don't know anything about guns, their functions, abilities, downsides, or even the gun laws we currently have. If it's because of the drum magazine, the reload time is prohibitively long, to the point a traditional magazine-fed or even tube-fed option would often be easier, faster, and more efficient as a result. It's literally only because it's scary-looking that anyone carea.

I'm often curious as to where guns in games come from, especially when based off of real guns. In the STALKER game series, this gun shows up as the "Eliminator", and is very useful for dealing with groups of mutants. Still takes a while to reload, though, so you'd better be reloading the moment you get a chance. That said, it's fun to see that there's some sort of real research put into some of these games, even if they are just fiction in the end.

Funny story, my sister was playing resident evil 4 for the first time. I was guiding her all the way to where you meet the merchant telling her that you will meet one of the few friends you will have in this game. His introduction scenes begin. She forgets or does not get where he went even though the cut- scene just show her. I tell her on the side of shack she goes there see the merchant, scream, shoot him in the head; which is surprising to me because she found the control difficult and thus her aim was horrendous. She miss 99% of her shots. I start to scream why; she said that she thought it was a monster. I tell her that you just saw his cut- scene she said she forgot and I was more dumbfounded. I just sat there and said to myself "in all the way she took him down it was a head shot. A quick one too" then broke out laughing at the realization of all of our events. Good times. *Edit* I remember the incident being more stupid so I went to see the whole scene and there a second cut scene where you are then put in the sell menu. Meaning she conducted a transaction with him left the sale menu forget who she looking at scream and shoot in the face. I am going to show her this so I make fun of her again.

As a breacher, I would find the capacity to be just a bit much, 8 rounds would make the drum more compact and practical for that job. What it would be really practical for would be introducing gas, either into a house through ferret rounds, or into a crowd. 40mm is better, but the rounds are expensive and heavy. With this you could carry around 50 rounds, allowing you to push a crowd around quite a bit with OC-loaded impact munitions.

I am from South Africa, and I used one of these, the fold over stock model without the auto eject. It is a very dangerous weapon to handle. Accidental discharges were plentiful. Picking up a Striker without the safety on, had a discharge. (it was issued that way, the issuing officer was on the other side when it went of, no injuries) put it too hard with the butt on the ground, it fired. (No injuries) Unloading it, also went off (no injuries). Otherwise my weapon of choice till today. Compact, easy to handle in close confined spaces, easy to sling over your shoulder. A great weapon to have in a vehicle. Little to no recoil.

@workingguy6666

From InRange, that I understand it - Part of it is that 5.56 relies on velocity to be an effective round (that we all understand), part of it is that where Ian and Karl live they see the world in distance-shots for their SHTF arms. If one accepts both points, and relies upon a 16" or 18" barrel for 5.56, then 300 blackout, and other more apt cartridges for shorter barrels, just don't come into play - and, thus, aren't their focus. Meanwhile, the maximum distance I can see shooting, or even see, if I'm not up on top of a building, is about 100 to 150 yards. So an AR pistol (300 BO, or 11.5" or greater 5.56 barrel) is all I need, or ever foresee using here.
@colsoncustoms8994
@colsoncustoms8994 4 жыл бұрын
@@alexanderstrickland9036 How are they "clumsy"? They are more compact and have the potential to weigh less than a rifle or carbine. That is the rationale they used in the WWSD project when they settled on the 16" and 14.5" barrels over the 18"-20"+. You could argue that the braces aren't ideal and are uncomfortable compared to stocks (which most people would agree with), but some of the more modern adjustable ones come pretty damn close to a proper stock. Not to mention, a lot of places you could keep an ar pistol as a truck gun if you have a concealed carry license, where a long gun might cause a problem, specifically with regards to how the ammunition and firearm are being transported (a lot of places require them to be stored separate, in the trunk usually or something similar). Cartridges like 300 blackout can definitely perform well in shorter barrels. A 10.5" blackout will still have about the same energy as a 16" 5.56, and a 12" will have more (depending on how everything is loaded of course). I'm not completely sold on 5.56 from shorter barrels (

The world view of gun control supporters is driven primarily by emotion because no one told them as a child that they can't just cry at a problem to solve it. Any sort of reasonable dialogue is largely lost on them, because they lack the objectivity required to approach the subject logically. As for the politicians, they're either covering their ass to keep a paycheck and not get voted out by said supporters, or they truly lack any sort of empathy, trust, or good will for their constituents.

I think a lot of the reliability problems with self loading shotguns are due this huge differences in shotgun ammo.

I purchased this 25 years ago used. It jammed once in a while until I took it apart and realized it was put back together wrong. There is a long pin that goes through the cylinder and if the last 1/4 inch is not pushed through into the other side the cylinder isnt supported properly. Since I figured this out it hasn't jammed once in hundreds of rounds.
