Ha-ha, this piece gave me a hard time! Highly figured grain. It does not like a scraper. Had to keep sharpening to keep from having grain tear-out. Then there's the recess! That is what caused the falling off of this piece. Had to fix it, twice! Finally, for me, the end was worth all the frustration. Tell me what you think! Broad Leaf Figured Maple, finished in shellac.

So I send you a treat piece of wood with no bugs, no rot, no loose bark, with just beautiful grain, and you use it to renew your membership in the flying bowl club. And with a second fly-by for anyone who missed the first one! 😂😂😂 Well done in spite of the challenges it gave you. I love it up on edge with the bottom showing. I turn a lot of bowls, but rarely I get some wood with bark. Then it is anxious waiting for the moisture content to fall to an acceptable, safe level. I probably get a little too excited for my own good. But, I come back to Shady Acres and get my relax mode back. Thanks, Phil.😊

That’s outstanding Phil! The contrast between the lightly colored, smooth, shimmering interior and the dark gnarly bark is just lovely! And the chatoyance of the grain is beautiful! Thank You Phil, Thank You Valerie....Nice piece of Maple. The little bit I have turned I have always had trouble with highly figured Maple because of the tear out on the swirly grain (I know probably due to inexperience, dull tool bits, too slow of speed & a bunch of other stuff). I usually have to spend hours sanding down the surface a lot BUT I love it after that sanding is over. ... Great example for all when problems happen and how to fix (yes Phil in my world "you can do no wrong" ha). ... This show had LOTS of action packed adventure...LOVED IT ALL 🙃TONS OF FUN....Nice piece Phil... .......................................TM.....................

Looks amazing Phil and I like the idea of changing how it sits when ever you want. I think it looks great in all of the options. And an outstanding finish for that beautiful grain. Those emojis most likely matched how you were feeling both times. But there was never a doubt in it not being finished. So I was all set to start watching at 3:00 but I was sitting waiting for my yearly eye exam. But I was wide eyed and ready to watch when I got home. And when I say wide eyes I mean it. She wanted to dilate my eyes so it was hard to look at the computer screen. So here I sit at almost 10 PM and just finished watching. it was well worth the wait! Another beauty in your books! Take care, Gary

Oh, yeah, dilated eyes are a pain to deal with. Especially if you have to drive home in the bright sunshine! I'm glad you finally recovered enough to watch! Phil, I find that I often don't pay ENOUGH attention to the lessons you offer me in every video. This time I was riveted to the entire production of this multi-based-not-really-a-bowl. And I caught THE LESSON full on. In all the Shady Acres videos I have watched, when you decide to mount the piece in a recess rather than using a tenon, I have always thought "Huh, my mortises are a lot deeper than that and I don;t worry so much about getting such an exacting fit". Of course, I have conveniently skipped over how much stronger the mounting is if the jaws of the chuck fits pretty snug into the recess or on the tenon. Yes, I knew that a close match would result in more contact area and a more secure hold. I nodded when you did that cool pencil on the live center trick to draw the diameter of the hold point. But me? I've let the fit of my mortises and tenons be a bit "by eye" and haven't worried a lot if I wasn't getting full contact. What a great demonstration of how much difference the close fit makes! AND you didn't just make the mortise deeper. You changed chuck jaws and made a snug mortise for them to fit in. Yes Phil, I've had a lot more pieces escape the chuck than you do. OK, OK, OK - I've learned. I'll be fitting my jaws a lot tighter from now on. Thanks! Pretty piece. Love the big leaf maple, particularly the burls. I have turned many bowls from it and they are just gorgeous. Keep on turning Teacher. I have a lot more to learn.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Жыл бұрын
I still prefer a tenon and don't know why I decided on a recess this time. The problem wasn't the fit, it was just a weak spot in the wood that lifted up. Gluing didn't help. So, bigger recess, weak spot gone, success! But, yes, proper fit is important! 😊

Not sure how i missed this one but im sure glad i found it. I absolutely love the figured woods the most, such beauty and intrigue in the wood when that finish enhances the grain. I am quite surprised at how it tore out when turning as maple is generally more well behaved ha ha but the figured grain is another animal i suppose. Beautiful piece and as always you knocked it out of the park. Thank you Phil for what you create and share!!

It's so beautiful from every side, I know exactly what I'd do if it were mine: I'd have it on a slowly rotating stand so that all sides could be viewed, then I'd be able to change position on one axis for variety. Boom! Extraordinary display piece. That chatoyance, wow it's even coming through on the cut and sanded sides, amazing. I know it cost you a lot of time and effort and I love the fact that the more times it fell off the more you'd chuckle.😅 To quote our friend George Formby: "turned out nice nice again".☺️ Thanks Phil, terrific job👍🙏👍

Beautiful Phil it definitely challenged you and it lost. You should put it on a turn table so it could go round and round showing off the beauty on both sides

WOW, WOW, WOW !!! I think it is hard to find adequate words to describe his piece Phil. Forget the 'little' problems it gave you, they pale into insignificance with the final piece that you were able to release from within. The grain, the chatoyance make tis piece outstanding. I absolutely LOVE the fact that it so multifaceted. It can be displayed 5 ways, each one a valid position. Stand it as a bowl, stand it on all 3 'flats' or stand it vertical to view the 'rings'. Any of he 3 'flats' would be valid but I would favour standing it so that the piece stood at its tallest to view the rings & what a piece of ART it becomes then. I think that would be my favourite viewing position, not using the rings as the base for the bowl, as lovely as that is. I would probably keep changing its position as all views deserve 'their day'. Wonderful, wonderful stuff my friend. Stay well my friend, Don from South Aust.

I think that is the way I like it most, too, Don. I'm going to get a turntable for the house and that way I can see all sides, bowl and bottom! 😊

Thanks, Gord. I sent it as a “sweet piece” treat. No loose bark, bugs or rot. Just beautiful fiddleback big leaf maple with good bark. Just spent the day cutting up another huge big leaf maple for our club. We found burl, Birds Eye, fiddleback, and tons of feather in the 30x30” slabs. Back breaking to move the slabs, but shear beauty in each one!

Hi Phil from Phil, What a gorgeous piece of art well done Phil, that made me jump when it came of the chuck, I think it should be standing up on a revolving table a bit like you had at the end as it shows off the better , Back in the 90s I had a contract to make literally thousands of pedal sticks for the pedal board that goes in front of the church organ, The grain was the same , I ended up going to put them through a very large drum sander to get them finished. It looks amazing Phil, Look forward to the next project. PHIL FROM THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOULIN FRANCE. has it didn’t matter which way I’ve put them through the thickness the grain would always chip out,
