String Gauges: What is Right For You?

With Ernie Ball sponsoring Scotland's award winning rock and metal festival, Les-Fest (www.les-fest.co.uk), I decided to take a selection of the strings they sent to Les-Fest HQ and talk about where I consider each set to be best used.
Thicker strings provide more tone and a louder response, but they are harder to play and bend.
Light strings are a breeze to shred about on, but don't sound quite as good and can be prone to tuning issues or fret buzz if hit too hard.
Personal preference, and the style of music you play will dictate your string preference, but it is worthwhile to get out of your comfort zone and try different strings to hear and feel the difference they make.

@philmstud2k
@philmstud2k 8 жыл бұрын
"Skinny top" as in the G string, B string, and high E string (first three strings from the right side of your guitar's six strings) are of a very light gauge, meaning thickness of the strings themselves are fairly thin and lightweight, while the low E string, the A string, and the D string (last three strings from the right of your guitar's 6 strings) are of a very heavy gauge, meaning the thickness of the strings themselves are fairly thick and heavy. What it essentially means is that you get bendy, lightweight, thin strings for your three "lightest" and "highest pitched-sounding" strings while you get sturdy, heavy, thick strings for the "deepest" and "lowest-pitched sounding" strings. It basically takes the best of both worlds from thick strings sets and thin strings sets into one ultimate package that could allow you to perform anything from the heaviest metal or punk songs to the sweetest and most airy lullabies, ballads, or pop songs.

@philmstud2k
@philmstud2k 8 жыл бұрын
alexi laiho Yeah, thinnest is 9 mm, maybe there are even some 8mms. And, the thickest I've ever heard of is 60mm, but 56mm is more common.

Hands down the best introduction and explanation of string gauges I've seen. Awesome stuff, sir!
@DenverStarkey
@DenverStarkey 10 жыл бұрын
I think ANY one mentioning strings , should mandatorily mention the fact you need to do a full reset up on your guitar when ever you change gauges. heavy strings are gonna yank on the neck much harder than light ones do , so the truss rod needs to be adjusted when you switch between the two ,and then that requires reseting the action
@DenverStarkey
@DenverStarkey 10 жыл бұрын
actually you can't plus or minus it, any slight change will affect how the neck bows, as when the truss rod was set was for a given string tension , say if you even swap out just one string say a 9 for a 10 , there is still going to be some slight effect on the neck tension even if so small you'd not notice it right off. but the tension change is still there and the effect it has on the neck (wood) is still there. But changing one string at a time is never reccomended any way. and changing a whole set of strings even if the gauge difference is minor , since its the whole set being moved up the increase in tension on the neck is that much more noticable.any time you change strings always recheck your truss rod, string height and intonation. many people may say well I don't know how , or i don't have the tools. Well get the tools, learn how, there hundreds of videos on youtube about adjusting the truss rod, string action and intonation of an instrument. I did , and i'm much happier with all my guitars and basses now. They all play amazingly now some even better than when they were brand new. but yes any gauge change you definitely need to at least check these things to see if they need changing.

Yeah, and if you have a floating bridge just forget about it. Use the same strings and don't try any fancy tunings either.
@DenverStarkey
@DenverStarkey 10 жыл бұрын
Paul L i hate floating tremelo systems. sure they are cool for double directional pull , but they are just a mess to work with, unless you are a pro musician , if you pop a string on one of them .. you can forget finishing your gig unless you keep a back up guitar.

True. The nut may also need to be re-cut .
@DenverStarkey
@DenverStarkey 10 жыл бұрын
the nut maybe, but i rarely adjust the nut unless replacing the nut , generally the nut action is pretty good set regardless of your strings unless you are making an extreme gauge change. plus it can be so easy to screw up a nut even by some one that is a veteran to guitar work.

I use E.B. Hybrids because I think its the best of both worlds, You got the nice lower end beefy chug, but the perfect high strings that shimmer through for lead. Also I've always had a thing for Mid's and Treble. Bass doesn't excite too much , I think its because I do a lot of lead work and want to come through the mix.

Late to the party, but let me share my experience though: It sounds awful. I broke my low E string at a rehearsal once and because I had no replacement with me, I borrowed a bass string. It did fit in quite nicely in terms of of gauge, but the sound was just dull with no attack & treble at all. It's a bass string after all, who would have thought!

+Travis Miller I Don't Know 0123456789 gives some very solid advice. Both of these are great options depending on your preferences. 10-52 will feel pretty tight on a strat, which is great for heavy riffing but you'll need extra finger strength for any big bends. I find 9s to be slightly too slack for rhythm playing, but you may find that they work really well for leads. In each case the heavier bottom strings will give you real benefit for heavy power chords.

@ScienceofLoud
@ScienceofLoud 8 жыл бұрын
It is possible, but when tuned to E there will be A LOT of tension there. Jazz players use those strings in E, but they don't bend strings much. If you want those two every extreme tunings it would be better to set up two guitars. Firstly you won't be compromising between too tight/too slack, and secondly your intonation will be all over the place going between those two tunings on the one guitar like that.

Jake Baron yeah makes sense, considering his style. he was anything but careful with the pick. it was all about the mute. i would imagine the thicker strings would make it easier to avoid accidental notes, as it takes way more strength with 12's or 13's than with 9's or 10's, especially from a single coil pickup. but those poor trem springs...

If you regularly tune BELOW Drop D, it's better to just get a 26.5-inch scale guitar (Ibanez RGD and various Schecter models)...because they sound significantly better and meatier than a normal-scale guitar with a thick gauge slapped on them......If you want to have multiple guitars in your arsenal, consider buying different scale lengths to compliment your string gauge of choice.....Les Pauls and PRS guitars are thick gauge friendly because they have shorter scale lengths than Fenders and IBANEZs.....Shorter Scale = Lesser String tension......w/c means s short scale guitar (ie. 25'') with .010's in them would produce the SAME tension as on a 25.5'' scale with .009's with the same tuning..........That being said, shorter scale guitars are shittier for rhythm playing because they sound muddier

I've been use Hybrids (9-46) for 20 years (in E standard). Great balance of shredding on the treble strings and chunkiness on the bass strings.

I used to use Super Slinky's. I found their sound to be dull. So I switched to D'Addario XL .09s. Nice and bright.

You should try the NYXL's. They feel nice and broken in as soon as you string them. They're also super durable and last a long time.

I have .14-68 (custom set) on my les paul (yes I made adjustments to the nut and everything) and had it set up to be played solely in Drop G. If I can do that. I think a stray could handle 10-52 or even a 60 on the low E

I currently use 10-46 I believe and anything below E sucks I want to get heavier strings. I enjoy drop D and Eb and D standard but I do a LOT in E standard, what should I get I was thinknig about the not even slinky because I fucking hate fret buzz and the twangy sound thin strings make chords are played fast.
@chazzylicks488
@chazzylicks488 9 жыл бұрын
you will still get fret buzz with heavier strings, and twangy sound is from your playing and pickups, im assuming you are playing on a strat or tele, to get rid of twang, a thicker set like the power slinkies will work, u can tune to Eb and d standard well enough and drop d is great of course, also it depends on your scale length, if you have 24.75 scale guitar you might want slightly higher gauge than if u have a 25.5. Also a simpe fix for getting rid of twang on a tele or strat is switch the guitar to either the 2 or 4th on the pickup selector i believe, you got to have have both single coils functioning like a humbucker to beef up the sound, oh also dont ignore the info i gave and get the not even slinkies... those strings are for c standard and drop b, any tighter and you could warp your neck, maybe im being a little crazy but ur intonation will go crazy from all that extra tension
@Neverknot47
@Neverknot47 9 жыл бұрын
chazzy licks I have a LTD F-50 I have 24 frets so I'm not sure how long that makes the neck. Yeah I'm now leaning more towards Beefy slinky because the not evens upon further investigation really are for C and lower which I don't do.
@chazzylicks488
@chazzylicks488 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Kony i find it unlikely that ur guitar is giving u twang as it is an ltd, if u are playing on a line 6 that is likely ur problem lol, invest in a better amp or learn how to dial in your amp... ur ltd is probably 25.5 so i would get power slinkies.

chazzy licks I think I'm just being too nitpicky with the twangy sound. But I do want thicker strings because of Drop D Eb etc etc Thanks for your help.

Joe Kony ok but just saying not even slinky and beefy slinky are too much, anyway i would personnally advise you to buy a set of d'addarios, they last longer and feel much nicer

Holy shit. i knew nothing about strings until i saw this video. i bought my first electric guitar ( B.C. Rich Bronze Series Warlock) When i turned 16. Ive been using Beefy Slinky since that day. I NEVER knew anything about these strings all i knew was that the guy behind the counter told me beefy's were the best. Thanks soooo much for simplifying things about strings in this video. Ill be using Skinny Top Heavy Bottoms from now on. Rock on!

I play .013-.056 piano wire. No kidding. My strings are made by a piano wire company and come in a tube not a package. I have incredibly strong fingers and can bend these like butter. I can play quite fast and hammer away, but no shredding. The action on my guitars is quite high and heavy round wound strings resonate like no others. Great for rhythm playing and throaty low note Jeff Beck type solos. They're not for everyone. They also sound better on a Tele than a Strat, but now I'm splitting hairs. Another great benefit is that no one else can play my guitars. They pick them up and put them down quickly.

I started with 11's, and after a few years tried 9's. I love 9's, even for D standard, and I play on a Dinky. If I go any lower than D, I can't get a 'tight' sound though. Standard is my tuning for the most part though. I'm going to get a baritone if I want to go lower.

Strings are entirely personal preference. Some guys (Omar Rodriguez) use 13's in standard tuning. I play Dunlop 10's because I'm not leaving standard much and I find Dunlops feel, sound and break in better than other strings I've tried.

Colin, I just wanted to express a word of thanks for giving me an idea for putting together a 'custom' string set for Slide Guitar tuned to Open E. (It'll suffice to say Slide Guitar is another beast entirely.) The top 4 strings would come straight from a standard .010 set using the .013, .017, .026, and .036 while the remaining bottom 2 strings would come directly from a Not Even Slinky set pressing the .044 and .056 into service. Credit goes to Rick Vito of Fleetwood Mac, etc. for sharing the recommended gauges on his Slide Guitar instructional DVD on Hal Leonard. I enjoy the videos. Keep up the great work.

I played for years with 11s and 10s. Recently grabbed 9s and damn happy about it. So much more comfortable on my fragile little snowflake hands. The licks and legato runs are smooth as butter. Playing with as little resistance as possible is good if you're as bad as I am!

I've been using Ernie Ball strings for as long as I can remember. I recently gave the D'Addario NYXL strings a try and I have to admit, they have a smooth feel to them, dare I say even more than my beloved Ernie's? 11-56 for some drop-B, and was rather impressed! Another great video! Thank you!!

I have thought about extended scale lengths, and have played 7 string guitars with 27" scale. Although I didn't have an issue playing these guitars, I've always felt 25.5" scale length felt most comfortable to play. Perhaps it's something I'll look into again in the future, but for now 25.5" is perfect for me.

10-52 standard tune 7 string. Light strings all the way! Scale length is incredibly important when choosing strings, so it'd be great to see a video addressing this, as it's so commonly overlooked.
