Here ia a string pulling art for beginners demonstration of how I like to do string pulls.
I make painting trays out of wrapping paper tubes that I cut in half and line with a strip of freezer paper. I like to hot glue a piece of foam core to the bottom to keep the tray from rolling around.
I lay pieces of cotton twine in the tray and pour different colors over the string. I use a palette knife to make sure all the strings is coated with paint.
I lay the strings on the canvas and pull them one by one. This allows me to create an interesting composition and a layered effect.
This technique takes a bit of practice and finesse. The strings sometimes have a mind of their own. Don't get frustrated if your first paintings don't turn out how you intended, mine sure didn't.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
If you enjoyed the video I would love it if you liked and subscribed.

Colors & Brands of Paint Used…...................
Gold - Liquitex Basics
Bright Aqua Green - Liquitex Basics
Payne's Grey - Liquitex Basics
White - Artist Loft Flow Acrylic
Metallic Blue - Artist Loft
Paint Mixing Formula…..........................
5 parts Floetrol
3 parts paint

I like the consistency of my paints to form the slightest mound when running off the stir stick into the cup of paint.

So cool, Brad! Excellent string pulls. Very innovative way to contain and coat the strings. My very earliest foray into fluid art included tiny string pulls with baker's twine. This inspires me to revisit on a larger sale.

Thank you very much Carole. I started out with string pulls too! I haven't done them in a long time. But recently started to experiment with them more seriously. Good luck and have fun with your string pulls.

I’ve heard of a “string pull” but I haven’t seen one....it was fun seeing your name attached to this one. It’s (as usual) a beautiful painting. My granddaughter Lyla told me that she had heard from you! She was so excited. I can’t wait to watch this video with her. She’s 12 and loves pour painting. Someday I’ll have to find a way to show you her latest pour....it’s really quite good. She would be so thrilled that YOU got to see her painting! Are you on Instagram or messenger? I’ll have to have my daughter (Lyla’s mom) show me how to find you. I’m nearly 60 and technologically spooked. Anyway, Lyla’s Christmas gift from me this past Christmas was pour paints and canvases. She was over the moon! You are now her favorite pour painter on KZfaq. It tickles me! Your faithful fan, Vicki

String pulls are a fun technique but I find them deceptively difficult. It's all about how you pull the string to create the design. I haven't done one in a while. Maybe a string pull will be my next video. I feel so honored that I'm a hit with your granddaughter. I'm on Instagram as brad kasten acrylic pouring. And I have a page on Facebook as well. You have to be friends on Facebook to use messenger, but feel free to message me any time. I'll paste the links to my instagram and Facebook pages below. Thanks for the wonderful comments and I look forward to seeing Lyla's latest masterpiece one day. instagram.com/bradkastenacrylicpouring/ facebook.com/bradkastenacrylicart

I have a question (or two) with regard to paint amounts, if you don't mind. I have done exactly ONE successful string pull, and for the life of me can't duplicate the results. Does the base layer need to be paper thin on the canvas? Seems like no matter how thin I make it; it always pulls way too much and just smears the painting. Second question...Should the paint on the string be allowed to drip away a bit before putting it on the canvas? When I do it, it always looks like there's too much paint on the string to get that crisp look. Your videos are where I go when I can't quite get there. Maybe I've just gone into a "String pull" slump, but I just can't seem to get re-focused on this technique. Any help appreciated.

It sounds like your paint is to thin. Use a thicker mixture and I think you'll have better results.

Do you use the pouring medium in the black also? Or is that just plain black paint
@AcrylicPouringAcademy

Hi Maddie, Yes. I use the pouring medium in all the colors including the black. The pouring medium I used for this painting was Floetrol.

Is the black you start with on the canvas, flow acrylic?
@AcrylicPouringAcademy
@AcrylicPouringAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is Artist Loft Flow Acrylic mixed with Floetrol and a bit of water. I usually mix 2 parts Floetrol to 1 part paint.
