Hi JP, very sad to see Gordon Lightfoot gone. I've been playing guitar for over 55 years now and I've always admired the people who go on stage "just" with a guitar and you don't miss a band. Gordon Lightfoot was one of them. "Long River" was always one of my favorite songs. Unfortunately, another musician has left who has accompanied us through our lives and there are fewer and fewer to whom our hearts belonged. Many greetings from Germany.

Good evening JP. I just stumbled upon this tribute to Gordon Lightfoot and want to say that I’m sorry for your and all of Canada’s loss with Gordon’s passing. I lost track of the number of Gord’s Gold CDs and cassettes (yes, I’m that old) I’ve owned in my lifetime. He was a generational talent. I was blown away by the fact that it took him 5 minutes to write Canadian Railroad Trilogy. I am going to respectfully disagree with you about you not coming close to Gordon’s song writing capabilities. I stumbled on to Hometown Battlefield and I’ve since played it for several dozen people, all of which were moved to tears including myself. Gordon was an amazing songwriter and musician, but he didn’t write Hometown Battlefield, YOU did. He didn’t blend those powerful emotional lyrics with a beautiful piece of music, YOU did. I played Dave Gunning’s These Hands with a friend of mine who is a midwife and when het gets to the part of that song where he talks about some hand comfort a baby crying, she was crying as well. No, you and Dave are not walking in the footprints of Gordon, or Stompin Tom, who I only recently heard about, you’re adding your own footsteps next to theirs. The musical world would be pretty boring if all musicians had the same fingerprints. Now, having reached this without (hopefully) triggering any land mines, I’m going to stick my neck out a bit. Gordon told stories with his songs. Canadian Railroad Trilogy, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and even the songs he wrote about himself and his family were stories. I can’t recall any songs of his that were other stories. Even Don Quixote was more about Don’s story and less about the social theme behind the story. I can’t imagine Gordon performing Hometown Battlefield, These Hands, Us, or the others songs you and Dave had written and performed. Not because those songs are beneath him, but because they were outside of his genre. I can however easily see John Denver performing those songs because he wrote about a lot of the same social justice issues that you do. Hopefully you won’t take offense at this. It’s just one idiot’s opinion. Last, I’m going to leave you with what is likely the all time stupidest music related question in history. I’ll preface this question by confirming for you that my musical abilities are why I drive a truck. If I get enough sleep, then caffeine into my system, I am almost competent enough to ply the stereo. When you’re in the middle of a guitar solo can you recognize that a certain finger isn’t needed elsewhere for some number of notes, and pre-stage that finger in its proper position ahead of time? Thank you for all you do in the music industry. This Central Texas is a fan! Try to keep Dave out of trouble. 😂 Wayne Lind, Texas. Now, having started out

J.P. there was a fella by the name of wainwright the third from Canada who cut an album of all Light foot songs. Probably back in the seventies, he was rather tall and often wore a cowboy hat. Do you remember who he was? Back several years ago i seen him play Don't Think Twice to Bob Dylan when Dylan was honoured into the Kennedy awards. So happy you did this J.P, we were lucky to be alive with Gord. I would love to hear you play Red Wood Hill, a tribute to mother nature. Thanks a many.

JP, What a heartfelt tribute. I find myself on your site as a subscriber because of Gord, as Gord's music introduced me to yours with the initial release of the Long River, which then led me to so much of your other stuff. Just last March I was glad to have the opportunity, with my son and wife ,to meet you and Dave in Milwaukee. A small venue at the start of a tour in an beautiful and intimate space. A small audience that was blown away by how both of you played. My son, a 16 year old special needs kid ,had the GL 80 years strong shirt when we got to meet you guys ,much to Dave's amusement. He was over the top about how well the two of you played, and talks often about both that show, and his most recent GL concert in Elkhart, IN three times postponed and finally performed last year. The Long River album is special, I can't imagine how special a second album will be. Our only request, and I'm sure many on here would second it, is that your tour it. That plus a rendition of the Messenger, and just because the band is small :) If I might suggest something, perhaps one evening here it would be appropriate to play a rendition of the Poet off the first Long River album. It certainly, to me anyway, describes the effect Gordon had on so many of us ,and I'm sure there are those here who have not yet heard it. For all the GL fans, it would be soothing to hear, if only to know that we all were touched by what Gordon did for the fans, and for so long. With our gratitude for what you do, we thank you. Harold, Philip, and Jennifer Kirman, Romeoville, IL

Growing up, my parents didn’t have much of a record collection. Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, Beattles, Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull, a mix. The only artist they had more than one album from was Gordon Lightfoot. I’ve had him with me all my life. Trying to play a fingerstyle version of Don Quixote now. It was on repeat in iTunes when I opened it after hearing the news. It’s never ending.

Wanted to thank you for this video tribute to one of Canada’s favorite native sons, Gordon Lightfoot. Seen it now a few times. This was a gut punch for me when I heard of his passing and your visceral review of his music and, like you, brought tears to my eyes, but hey, I didn't make any promises to Gordon. I was too young/immature when he was in his prime and It's now that I am truly appreciating the genius he was and am so grateful he left us this eternal music. I’m a Bluenoser living out in Denver, CO and made note of the tribute to Gordon you have coming up April of 24 at the Rebecca Cohen in Halifax with the NS Symphony. I need some more specifics cause I’ll come back home for this event. Love the channel and will up the engagement. BTW, ever travel out and round this region?
