The instrument seems to have the best quality of a lute and guitar combined coupled with this amazing artist who reconciles this in the frame of channeling the 19th century superbly.

The contrast in tempo is fantastic, some people might think taking liberties but in this 19c music it works beautifully . Brilliant Raphaella.

A great version of this piece, completely different than all the others. More melancholy I wonder if this is what Mertz intended. Who knows.

www.music-treasures.com/guitars.htm This site doesn't talk about her guitar in particular, but gives many examples of guitars from the 1800s. I believe she plays a Mirecourt guitar. You can find a couple of examples on that web site. Hope this helps.

It's a French Mirecourt built guitar. The smaller body style was characteristic of many french builders. At the time it was not so uncommon to have added strings in addition to the 6 string guitar. The smaller body is somewhat inspired from the early baroque guitars. These instruments are a bit of a carry over in terms of body shape, but quite different.

According to a Wikipedia article, Smits bought an old Mirecourt guitar c. 1827. This model looks like it has 8 strings rather than the common one string addition in the 19th century. The narrow waist and peg tuners were the standard design of that era, as is a non-raised fingerboard. Smit's instrument has a spruce soundboard and maple sides, with an ebony fingerboard.

Sir, if this is a Mirecourt guitar, then it has had the extra two bass strings added. To me, however, it sounds like a replica of LaCote guitar, of the same era as the Mirecourt guitars, with modern Spanish fan-bracing on the inside, instead of the original cross-bracing. Be that as it may, it sounds great and the performance is that, too.

One other note - these bass strings are of the modern construction. Bass strings, during that era, had a silk core, instead of a nylon one, and, as well, were not manufactured to make a booming sound like this, but, an airey bass sound, much like a bassoon.

I believe it is the Mirecourt. She's also used it to play the Bach Violin Chaconne to great effect. www.rsmits.com/eINST-Mc.htm

So SBM, what set or combination of sets does Ms. Smits prefer on her guitar? I've never played a Mirecourt style guitar before so don't know much about their playing characteristics but this certainly sounds like a higher tension set, and with nylon trebles? BTW, I've been ordering from you guys since your site went live and am about to order a lot more today. I play classical, electric, and acoustic guitars, double bass, electric bass, mandolin, and octave mandolin so naturally you play an important role in keeping me going. Keep up the good work!

Dear Brad, I always use a low tension set. With high tension this guitar wouldn't sound at all.

What is your opinion of the Nylgut from Aquila?
@MarkInLA
@MarkInLA 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it does sound lute-like with maybe theorbo basses or those, what, 6'-8' necked lutes (I forget correct name)..The shallow body projects faster and tone is more like early music. This projection was needed then, before electricity, for court gigs !! Sumpin' lika dat, my guess !!

Amazing tone. I am surprised that an instrument from the early 19th century would produce such a rich tone. Does anyone know how the two lower resonating strings are tuned.
