When I was a teenager I went through the edgy phase where I drew a lot of horror and gore and I often, without thinking, gave most of my characters some kind of stripes. You might be interested in the Horror manga "Uzumaki" by Junji Ito. Uzumaki means Spiral and he brings this theme to its maximum potential. The cursed spirals pop up everywhere around us. Snails, Staircases , Hypnosis and even in and on our body, fingerprints, hair growth pattern and your inner ear. It is one of the weirdest patterns but it is part of nature. And the way he makes the pattern feel unnatural and alien is skincrawling. Great video, it's always fun to remember this masterpiece and remind yourself to never read it again. just one correction; the stripes of the barber shop pole has nothing to do with making it stand out. theres a long history going back when barbers use to be dentists too and red came from the bloody cloth they wrap around a pole, to tell people they do dentistry here. So it is a form of advertisement, but not because its a striking look.

It's funny how I got to this video today, after last night, wondering why most main characters in the Harry Potter movies often wear stripes. They where outsiders to the world as witches and wizards, but also outsiders to their peers as they did not feel the need to be conventional or fit in.

I think your interpretation of the "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" was a bit of a miss/stretch. The kid of the camp commander simply hadn't seen anyone in a prison uniform before so he assumed they were pjs. This assumption is based on his childish naiveté, his privilege and his impartiality towards the jewish kid. That's what the movie is plays on, not on our "society's multiple interpretations of the stripe".

Stripes relate to primal survival in a way other patterns don't: claw marks. I'm not well versed in genetic memory and related topics to say how something like that could've developed, but it seems plausible. It would be so interesting to know if there are ways to measure people's stress response to stripes in comparison to other patterns. Might be interesting to look at small spots to, being a typical pattern of disease.

This makes me think of The White Stripes, who use only three colours, strong visuals and simplicity. Look at the Seven Nation Army music video, it is bold, it is powerful, it uses few colours and diamonds moving towards the camera, giving an appearance of stripes. The White Stripes have always had a strong visual presence, and knowing this about stripes gives insight into their name and visuals. Also, great video, well made and informative 👍

It got me thinking about how common stripe pattern from blinds is in film noir and neo noir, it thought it might symbolize the dual nature of many of the characters common in those movies, because they have both light and darkness in them (the detective is often both the "good guy" we root for and the gritty tough outcast)... and also, like you said, they are often rebellious and devious characters in those movies...

As you quoted in your script about the IBM logo design, "Stripes attract attention." Adding to what you explained on the topic of fashion, I've learned that this applies when designing pieces with figure & silhouette purposes in mind. For example, some women may choose a striped top to bring more shape/curvature into the chest area while keeping things subtle. Some women find them figure flattering some don't. Of course, not saying every woman that wears a striped shirt does this with this mission in mind, but those that are aware of how certain patterns enhance and reduce may do. I think this was also one of the motivations behind having Juno wear stripes as it helped accentuate her belly in every shot once she started showing. When focusing on making the subject's frame stand out, this is also used with leggings (depending on the pattern and width) and yoga pants -- the same illusion of adding more 'curvature and shape' happens when wearing a slim turtleneck. With this knowledge, it's a great way to be in control of and manipulate what does and doesn't give attention; same as being a cinematographer. P.S Never knew about the World War 1 battleships dazzle camouflage, so tacky and ugly _~in my snob voice~_ lol

Stripes were only used on ship's in WWI, even then only a few ships were painted that way and even fewer of those saw battle. Stripped ships weren't used for WWII due to the development of radar.

Stripes usually stand out, but they don't always; some creatures like tigers and baby tapir use them for camouflage. Still, cool video. Pretty interesting analysis on Juno; if I'd been asked what's with the stripy shirts, I'd have guessed they make the bulge of her belly stand out more, though I think possibly the coolest idea is that it makes her big, round baby bump look like Jupiter, which is of course named after Juno's husband.

I've been wearing thick, horizontally striped shirts for as long as I can remember (both warm and cool colors). And I'm Pretty much the only one in my family that does as well (to the point relatives will joke about it, which I always found odd that they'd feel the need to comment on clothing). Then, not too long ago, I actually came across a girl who said I should stop wearing them (honestly couldn't tell it was a joke or not) regardless, I didn't, and made sure to point them out when ever I bumped into her again. lol But now that I've seen this video, I guess my subconscious love of stripes makes sense, think I'll try to incorporate them more in my life and art!

The stripes on naval ships was much more common in WWI. They called it dazzle camouflage and was created by the British as an effective strategy to combat U-boats as although they could see the boat, they couldn't tell which way it was facing or how fast it was going because they couldn't distinguish features in the stripes. The enemy needed to know how fast the ship was going to be able to torpedo it effectively.

Sorry but Pastoureau is complete nonsense. Hundreds of medieval knights and cities had stripy coats of arms (Barcelona being probably the most famous). Sailors have been wearing stripes since, at least the 14th century as shown on medieval miniatures. Stripy outfits were all the rage in the 17th and 18th century and since the 19th century football teams commonly use stripy jerseys. The Dutch flag is striped since the 16th century... There are enough significant counter-examples to weaken any generalization about the stripe, you could make a more refined statistical point, but that would require actually counting the stuff which no one has been bothered to do so far.
