I am so grateful to have learned the first/correct way to carry yarn and can see how good it looks on the WRONG side! Why? Because the shawl I am knitting starts each row with a purl stitch! How would you change yarn placement for patterns that start with a purl? Thank you. This technique is the neatest I've used, and it will be my go-to from now on, but is there a solution to the first stitch being purled?

@@SuzanneBryan Hi Suzanne, I know this is an old video, and the question is also old, but I think I have a similar question if I am reading it correctly. I bought a pattern for a hooded sweater (emilien on ravelry) and decided I would like to do it in a 3 color thin stripe, versus doing thicker stripes and breaking the yarn each time. How would you float 2 colors up the side instead of one? I am thinking I would do 4 or 6 row stockinette in the sweater, and would carry the yarn every 2 rows as you showed, but is it ok to carry 2 colors that way, or will it be too obvious or too stiff? Thank you!

No matter how long it has been since you've made this video, it continues to have something to instruct - you are saving my project: a baby cardigan worked flat, bottom up in pieces and seamed, that has color striping of various widths (one color is solid gray, the other color is variegated handpainted). So I will still carry the resting yarn up the right side catching it every 2 rows until it is time to use it, and then carry the old yarn the same way. Quick question: do you start a new color for stockinette the same way as you showed it for garter (where you tied a slipknot in the new color and snugged it up next to the stitch in the current color, then started working with it). I am assuming that starting a new color would work the same way for stockinette as garter but I wanted to ask to be sure. Thanks, Suzanne!
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can do that. I use the slip knot so that I can remove it before seaming to avoid any extra thickness there. Sounds like a very fun project.

Hi Suzanne. As usual another faultless demonstrations. Question : I am working on a 4 row stocking stitch stripe, that instructs me to increase into the first and last stitch of every alternate row i.e. every knit row. I assume I still carry the colour not in use up the sides and work my increase in the appropriate colour yarn. Hope this makes sense. Michelle UK
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. You might want to make a little swatch and test it out first. You are probably making a kf&b, If it were me, I would work it in the first stitch (because the extra stitch falls in the second position) and then in the next to last stitch, so that the increase falls in the next to last stitch position. This will look symmetrical. Let me know how it turns out. And yes, carry the yarn in the same manner.

@SuzanneBryan

At that point, I might consider breaking the yarn and weaving in the ends. It is personal preference. I don't like the look of yarn carried too far up the edge. If you can do it, and conceal it, then go for it.

You would need to take the just used yarn to the WS (knit side) and bring the new yarn from the WS to the RS. I would experiment on a swatch first so that you can see what is happening and you can perfect it. Will you need to be doing jogless jogs? Let me know. this is another good video idea.

I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I tried swatching in a couple different ways. I knit it inside out, and I felt like I had more control knitting with the knit sts this way. The technique that worked best for me was to carry the yarn up every 2 rnds. I twist the old with the new once, counterclockwise on the wrong side (knit side). Then moved the working yarn to the right side(purl side). I tried doing jogless but the slipped stitch made a very large, noticable bump. Though I found that I still had to slip the first stitch on the 2nd rnd of a new ball/color or I would end up with a big hole at the join. Hope this can help you as well if you make a tutorial. Thank you for your help and advice. Your videos are so helpful, Thank You!

It starts with 2 color garter stitch and how to carry the yarn up the side, then goes to Half Linen Stitch, Hexagon Stitch and Mosaic Knitting which are all types of slipped stitch designs, then moves into Intarsia, then Stranded knitting, followed by Brioche and finally Double Knitting. Hi Suzanne. I used this method on a two colour striped baby cardigan last year after watching your video, which was difficult at first, never having knitted stripes before. Four days ago I started a three colour feather and fan scarf, with four rows in each colour. A friend told me to slip the first stitch on every row to hide the two yarns being carried up the side. I am having trouble with it, and pulled it undone today to start again. Are you able to offer any advice on knitting three colour stripes in stockinetee, carrying the yarns up the side? P.S. I knit sweaters with 4 stripe colors. Can I carry all of them up the side? Or will that make the edge too thick?

Depends on the weight of the yarn. Try it on a swatch and see what you think.

I am sorry but you must have me confused with someone else. I do not write crochet patterns, nor have a pattern called gift wrapped. Thank you.

Nice looking video, but it's too bad you didn't fast forward through the rest of the garter/stockinette knitting.

Thank you. The viewer can set the speed for the playback of the video. Happy knitting.

Which type of device are you using to view videos?

On iPhones, iPads, android phones, PCs and macs you can adjust the speed in the settings. If you tell me what you are using I may be able to help you.

I've loved your other videos, but this was rather tedious. You've been mastering the zoom on your camera -- kudos to you. It makes it very clear. Let me suggest the next step -- Learn to Use the Pause Button! Then we don't have to watch 20 of 28 minutes of just plain knitting and purling. This could have been an 8 minute video, and I'd probably retain more because I didn't nod off to sleep re-learning to knit.

You can also speed up the video as you like or you can move the red bar at the bottom of the video to skip to the area you want to see. I am sorry that you are unhappy with this video. Happy knitting.
