Stromae Takes America - "Formidable" In Seattle

Stromae is ready for America. In an interview with The FADER earlier this year, Stromae spoke his about his ultimate goals and said, “Our ambition isn’t just to be big, it’s to be listened to and supported by people. And to have the success-if we deserve it, of course.” And in a new video series, the newest installment of which premieres on The FADER today, Stromae sets out to conquer America, city-by-city with discreet performances.
In the video, Stromae declares "I want to be serious now." In a Seattle motel, the most appropriate place to talk about loneliness, he walks viewers through the construction of his hit song "Formidable." The song is made in four "chapters"-it starts with two piano riffs, is layered with two drum tracks, given an emotional string section to make the listener cry, and is finished with a tight keytar section.
With the song fully worked out, Stromae heads to Seattle's Baranof, a dive bar in Greenwood, to take the stage. The singer, who plays sold out shows all over the world, steps up to the mic surrounded by nautical-themed kitsch and belts out an incredibly intense rendition of the song for the tiny crowd of confused Americans. The dazed audience is polite and it seems like he managed to win over some new fans.

Nah its just the point where noone cares about this. Music comes and goes. Why i should recognized people who are nothing to me? Older people like music from the 60/70 and cant hear anything from today or recognized someone. Same with the youth generations. They dont care or recognize talents from 80/90 and dont listen to them because it comes and goes, nothing for the eternity.

The most dramatic (also tragic) part is not the fact that they did not recognize a famous artist, but most of them can't recognize pure art. Even without subtitles and translation you can feel that this performance has something to say. 10/10 brilliance.

I think it's great that he's willing to put himself out there in a place where he's completely unknown, where the audience is not used to any form of culture beyond cheeseburgers. There is no hype, no fans, just him and his music, raw, in front of a new audience. Any artist looking for truth in the core value of their art should do that.

It seems like you are judging THEM. Look, just because somebody doesn't cry because of how beautiful something is doesn't mean they don't like it. It's actually the complete opposite, by being quiet they are showing him respect, they are also trying to show that he is different from the others by actually taking time to listen to his music.

I know that pub. The Baranof. In my neighborhood (Greenwood). The core denizens of this place are retired old Scandihoovians*, then you get the hipsters and people that just come in for the strong, cheap drinks. Of course nobody knew him. The tiny little Alaskan Native who came up to compliment him at the end, I knew her. I think of the entire pub, she appreciated him most. She's passed away now. The bartender at the very end, I know her well, too. (love her. the bartenders at this little dive are wonderful, some working there for more than 30 years). I can't wait till it's safe to go back in the bar again. Miss that place. *Scandihoovians: *Scandinavians, Danes, Swedes, Norwegians, etc from the Ballard area of Seattle

I've watched this lots of times in the last couple of months and only just noticed that the official video for the song is on the screen behind him (from 5:38 - it's blurry but definitely the video of him in Brussels) so surely some of the patrons must realize he's no ordinary karaoke singer. He's got such distinctive features that they'd realize he's the guy in the video. I actually think it's beautiful the way the crowd is won over by his talent, energy and commitment as well as the multiple, layered musical hooks in the song. I just love this song and my 5-year-old daughter loves saying "formidable". I hope he's doing okay and would love to see him in concert one day.

There's nothing more beautiful than to see an artist get emotional with their own music. That's what shows true passion for what they're doing, and boy this guy is passionate. I think he's SUCH an astist. A genius.

This was one of the best versions of the song I watched on youtube. His pain in such an out pf context bar came out so loud... and I think comments below are wrong about the audience, They are intrigued and he left a remark on them...
