I built one of your tables, 8 foot in length. Love it, and set it at a local hangout here in Ohio. I made one change to your cross brace. Watching " This Old House " episode, where they built a picnic table. Their cross brace went from leg to the brace under the table top. And really easy to do. Thank you all you do. Also, listening to this video, I could understand your first video a little easier. And maybe check out TOH's video. Between you two, that was an easy build. Not a complaint, just a suggestion.

Jay I just need to say thank you for sharing this. About a week after I saw this video I lost my desk job I had for over 10 years due to the virus. I had always wanted to get into hands on work to make a living, and have built a few things for myself but the white collar paycheck was to good to leave. I built one of these tables and started advertising and orders started coming in. This video has enabled me to provide support for my family the past few weeks and I just can't thank you enough for how much of an impact it has made on our lives.

Hi Jay, I have built several almost exactly like yours. One big thing I do differently is I only use pressure treated lumber for the legs and my legs are normally 2 x 8". My in-laws still have the table I built for them in 1985'. It's out in the weather year round in upstate NY. As long as it gets a coat of exterior stain every few years, it will last forever!! Oh yeah, they have changed out the carriage bolts due to rust. I'm thinking stainless should have been used in the original build.

You had this picnic table (or something very close) on your KZfaq channel several years ago. I think it was when you had a shop at an apartment complex you worked at. Anywho, I built it and left a comment letting you know how much I liked it. You said it was the first time someone had built something that you had put on KZfaq. You asked me to send you a picture of it so you could put it on your website, or blog.

Anybody traveling thru northeast Ohio, can stop by the Pilot in North Lima, exit 234 on the Ohio Turnpike and see one of Jay's table. Since I retired, the piece of crap table was replaced by a lumber chain store table, another piece of crap. Went to move the table, tried to pick up the table to move it, and the 2x6's came loose from the small nails they used. Watch Jay's video and, Wala, we have a new, strong, sturdy picnic table. Thanks again, Jay. People should also watch his first video on picnic tables and, This Old House's version to pick up on one design change, the cross braces. Sorry Jay?

I've been needing to touch up our old table, has those round tube frames for the ends, to which you add seats and a top. Been dreading de-rusting all the punched holes, etc., and painting it, but we do like how it only needs one person to drag it around (and fyi, you're looking at him) on those 4 somewhat-flattened curved tubing 'legs' without tearing up the grass. However, I REALLY like your design here! Maybe I'll add a 2/4 runner to bottom of each leg assembly. Thoughts?

Treated limber is a good way to get infections if a splinter finds its way into any body part. Especially if kids are involved. Otherwise, are 2X10s really necessary for the legs?

One small concern... Having the carriage bolts installed with the nuts on the inside of the legs could lead to a cut or scrape on legs, especially when wearing shorts. Personally, I'd flip the carriage bolts 180º so the nuts are on the outside of the legs.
@JayBates
@JayBates 4 жыл бұрын
In this case it doesn't matter. People sit near the end and straddle the legs so their legs will be exposed either way.
@JusBidniss
@JusBidniss 4 жыл бұрын
Brad Meacham Or another way to go, to preserve the nicer carriage bolt head on the outside of the legs, would be to start with an 1/8" pilot hole, put the brad point of a paddle bit in that hole on the inside of the crossbrace and drill halfway through the crossbrace, with the paddle bit diameter just larger than your socket you'll be tightening the nut with, so as to bury the nut in the wood on the inside of the crossbrace. Then finish by enlarging the 1/8" pilot hole to 5/16" for the bolt. Or just grind off (or hacksaw) the protruding bolt flush with the nut. Do this after it's installed, and if you ever need to back off the nut, that'll straighten out any bolt threads on the end that the grinder messed up.
@patrickfiles6080
@patrickfiles6080 4 жыл бұрын
Norm Abram's plan gets around this by using 4x4s for the seat supports. Then you use a Forstner bit to recess the spot where the bolt & nut stick through. It also allows you to make dadoes for the legs to fit into. But apart from those details, Norm's plan is almost identical to Jay's.

Hey Jay, quick question refering to your awesome Miter saw station. i wanted to ask this question before purchasing your plans. Can i make all the cuts that are recommended using half sheets?? i just landed a 3/4' plywood score and got all that i need to make your station for $300, but its all half sheets measuring 44 3/4" x 37 1/4 ". Im literally holding my finger over the purchase your plans button and dont want to make the commitment if its not going to work.

I don't recall exact pricing. It's been a while since I last sold one. But it was all materials cost + very little hourly wage. Selling these was in the beginning of my woodworking journey so I was more concerned with getting happy customers than trying to squeeze profit. Probably $20 or so profit per table? It wasn't much.

QUESTION: Will you go to Heaven when you die? Have you lied, stolen, used God’s name in vain, or lusted (which Jesus said was adultery, Mt. 5:28)? If so, God sees you as a liar, thief, blasphemer, and adulterer at heart. If you die in your sins, you will end up in a terrible place called Hell. But there's good news. Though we broke God's Law, Jesus paid the fine by dying on the cross: "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (Jn. 3:16). Then Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses. He fulfilled all the prophecies of the promised Savior. Please, today, repent and trust Jesus, and God will forgive you and grant you the gift of eternal life (Eph. 2:8,9). Then, to show your gratitude, read the Bible daily and obey it, join a Christian church, and be baptized.
