Thank you Martyn! Glad you are enjoying my Stroudwater, and T&S Canal Updates series. Another one should land early this spring - much going on with the Westfield Lock (re)uncovering, as well as the Eastington Locks restoration, and the latest on Brimscombe Port too. Happy New Year to you too, Cheers, Paul.

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland I don't think many pople would know what's going on with this canal without your input. Absolutley fabulous video - full of historical facts, information and old photographs. Wonderful camera work, still photographs and expert commentary, made this vlog fascinating. The tunnel portals were magnificent - thanks for showing them to us. Won't it be fantastic when the whole of the canal is navigable again. Stay safe old friend and I'll see you again soon.

Thank you Michael. Glad you enjoyed it. I loved putting it all together. It is simply an incredible feat of engineering. I would love to see it open, but very unlikely to happen in my lifetime. Thanks again, take care, Paul 👍🙂

Hi Paul 👋👋 I’ve come over via Watto’s channel 😊 very informative video and lovely to see the canals. The conditions for the workmen do sound tough but it’s good they tried to consider how to minimise the effects of the fumes. Great video thank you for sharing 😊

Hello! And welcome to Westcountry Wanderings. Yes, I have been a subscriber of Ron over on Parkinsons Walks almost since he started some 6 years ago, and I set up my own channel when I was living in Devon. I now live in Gloucestershire, but frequently visit Devon and Cornwall as I still have family there. Yes, there are 11 updates in the Stroudwater and T&S Canal series so far; I will continue with the updates as and when the exciting restoration continues. As you say, the T&S goes through some stunning scenery. I have also done videos about the Kennett & Avon Canal, the Droitwich Canals and the Grand Western Canal. I have just started covering the Bude Canal in Cornwall which I hope to do more of next year. There are playlists covering all of the other series that I do, like the Severn Way, the Cotswold Walks and my Railway Series. You are most welcome here. Take care, Paul.

Thank you Louise! Glad you enjoyed it. It really enjoyed making this - particularly 'The Kings Reach' section of the canal - I was lucky with the light; it enhanced the autumnal colours and the canal bed. Thanks so much for watching and commenting 🙂👍 Cheers Paul

Thank you Kim! It is funny, really, because although I grew up very close to the (then abandoned, and largely over grown) Stroudwater Canal in the 1960s & 1970s, I never took any notice of it then, despite my mum's uncle being one of the early members of the Canal Trust. It is only since I've returned to Gloucestershire last year, after living for decades in Cornwall, that I have taken an active interest in it. One of the reasons for that was watching YT Channels like 'Cruising the Cut' and the much missed ' The Narrowboat Experience' for several years previously. Thanks again for a lovely comment, and hope you both have a fab weekend too! Cheers, Paul.

Super video: content fascinating with excellent editing and delivered perfectly and at just the right pace. Thank you for explaining about all those shafts. But I still can't understand how building 26 vertical shafts and working to join them up, lifting up all the material was easier than simply (in my mind) working horizontally from either end to join up, and just dragging out the material.
@westcountrywanderings
@westcountrywanderings Жыл бұрын
Thank you Peter. Glad you enjoyed update 11 in my ongoing series about the Stroudwater and T&S canals. Part 14 will probably arrive in about a month or so. I think the reason for the shaft method of construction, is that it is easier to pull the soil and rock dug out to make the shaft in an up and down direction using buckets and rope, rather than digging longitudinal and trying to pull it out the same way as you are digging through due to space (and ventilation) in the tunnel passage. The shafts serve a dual purpose in improving air flow in the tunnel, which is vital in a tunnel this length. Much easier nowadays with tunnel boring machines, which remove the debris and pass it backwards along the tunnel it has dug, and air fans and ducting for air flow at the top. Thanks again, take care, Paul.

Hi Paul, it looks like a huge job for the canal trust to build a whole new cut. The archeological dig you showcased looked very interesting and it looks as though they discovered a lot of artefacts. It will be very lovely when this restoration is complete. It’s a worthy challenge as our canal systems should certainly be protected 😊

Thank you Stephen and Yhana! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, lots of work to do to get the canal back fully in use, but it could be reconnected to the network in as little as four years or so. I will keep my viewers and subscribers updated on my channel. Thanks so much for supporting and watching my channel. Take care, Paul 🙂👍

That's really interesting Steven. Coincidentally, I couldn't sleep last night and 'Northhanger Abbey' was on BBC Radio 4xtra. She (the central protagonist, Catherine Morland, in the novel) mentioned the new canal near Chippenham (Wilts & Berks Canal) which would have been constructed around then. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Paul.

Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂👍Yes, although they have marked out the new diagonal route of the canal on the Whitminster side of the M5, they haven't begun to excavate it - yet! You can be assured I will do my level best to bring you the latest right here on this channel as soon as they do so. Take care, Paul 👍
