STRUCTURAL WELDING IN THE BIG CITY -- FIXING BAD WELDS
In this video, I’m on a structural welding in Oklahoma City on a commercial construction project. I’m Austin Ross of arosswelding and on this channel, I share my experiences as a rig welder and in my mobile welding business. Come along for a day in the life of a welder and today I’m a structural welder working on some metal framing construction. I actually don’t do a whole lot of structural welding jobs but after some failed attemps of finding a good welder for this steel framing construction we got in touch and I was able to switch it up for the day and do some commercial welding. This is actually a new starbucks construction and they are using a mix of steel framing and wood which is becoming more and more common even in residential builds. I had to reweld 100 gate hinges at a dairy barn with the calves in it. Lol. I cut the old ones off, cleaned them up and rehung. 1 inch flat steel to galvanized 8 inch pipe. It was a mess. The builder was trying to save money. The owner of the building held the builders last payment till I was done. The cows were a battle. They would munch on anything. They would pull my ground off. They would jerk my stinger out of my hand. They scattered a box of rods in the poo. Oh and let's not forget to poo. It was on everything. The path through the barn was just wide enough for my truck. They licked my whole truck of the salt that was on it. They pulled the lug nut covers off my rims. I figure they ate them. Pulled the snow plow plug off the front of my truck. Took my chipping hammer. It's still there somewhere. Good show man.

I work on only diaries. Welding, electrical, plumbing, etc. You get used to it but they can be a pain at times.

21 years all process welding, 16 year AWS/CWI/ultra sound inspecting. When I rolled on a job and saw a welder dressed like you, I knew it was gonna be a sweet job. Your a pro Austin.

At my age, oscillation is a natural.... LOL. I learned back in 63 when I joined the Navy. 22 years later, I was certified 3/4 plate, aircraft, and pulling canopy seals on Nuc piping. After that, I did construction work for major companies and projects. Then I decided to hit it in a new field so I started my own company doing stainless. Since I retired back in 2005, my grandson and his friends keep me busy on their crawlers and the armor wrap that goes on the axles. One thing I used to tell all of my underlings, was, you may not get rich welding, but you sure won't go hungry either. Go for it.......and take pride in what you do.

Went to a career school after dropping out of a community college got certified, ended up finding a job at a place that builds industrial sized dust collectors after 2 years of being promised to be put in the welding position and every time it opened up they hired a new guy for it. After bitching alot about it they finally put me in after 2 months kicked me out into the paint department. asked why I was kicked out my boss said it's because I was a horrible welder (he's not any kind of inspector or anything) so after a year of feeling sorry for myself thinking I wasted my time and believing my boss that I was a shit welder (DESPITE BEING CERTIFIED) decided to say eff it and tried for a welding job they called me back THE DAY that I applied and asked me to come in for a weld test came in passed it and the very next morning they asked how soon I can start went into my bosses office and quit on the spot told him ide finish up the week but I'm gone.

@@barbarasteed3966 well no the problem is that I wasn't going to get actual welding experience at the job I was at it was one of those things where I was waiting for my boss to make good on the promise that he would transfer me to the welding department but he never did I went from the assembly department to shipping to paint to woodshop to fab but he never wanted to put me in the weld department so finally I quit when I got a job offer for a welding position

Hey man, i'm here because i'm pushing 40 and i'm basically starting a new career. I'm doing a little bit of welding because i'm in an automotive class and it's required, so i check out videos just to see what advice i can get from anyone. That part at the end, where you talk about just going for it and not letting your doubts hold you back.... Thanks man, that got me good. I needed to hear that and i didn't even know it.

I got all my Welding training from Vocational Technical School during my Junior and Seniors years of high school as well. I chose between three. HVAC, Nursing or Welding. I chose Welding. Nursing was in the mix because there were some really good looking girls in the class. I chose Welding, because I would have been a terrible nurse!

I've been welding structural for almost a year now after going to college for an AAS in welding. When I first started they just kind of threw three of us newer guys out in the field and I wont lie my welds looked like those other welders welds and failing welds lol. Now I'm running with like a 98% welding pass rate. I really enjoy doing this stuff so I think it's awesome to watch it from a different perspective from a youtuber that I watch.

Awesome channel man, glad I found it. After the military I tried traditional college and dropped out and went to a trade school. Spent a few years as a commercial diver and got certified in wet welding. Then worked as a welder after my diving days. Needless to say I went back to college but stuck around in trade work. Now I'm in residential/commercial construction on the management side of it going to graduate school but nothing beats the experience I got working from the bottom up. So great advice in the end. You do just gotta go for it.

I'm an AWS CWI, and you are the guys we're looking for! Folks that actually know, understand, and execute a proper weld per the print and code. That garbage you are repairing is all too common, and is the reason more and more jurisdictions (driven by insurance requirements) are requiring certified welders and inspections on structural steel work, regardless of the scope of the job. Whether it's just an I beam in a house renovation, or a Starbucks canopy, they need to cover their butts. Those flare bevel joints look outstanding, I wish I saw more like that. Good on you for supporting the Vo-Techs and Welding schools. The more folks we can get started with a proper understanding of welding, the better. Not that there aren't people out there that aren't naturally good. We all know someone that never welded, picked up a stinger, and the rest was history. But for the most part, we get guys in, and you get the " I saw a video on KZfaq", or "My Uncle Clem welded on Tractors for 30 years".... and they have already started to pick up the bad habits. Those habits need to be nipped in the bud. Great video by the way!

Just found your videos! But watching them has reminded me of great memories! I used to mobile weld on pivot sprinklers for farmers. And build alot of fence! I think I'm going to build another rig and go back to welding. I should have never quit. I just moved to Oklahoma maybe we will run into each other and can burn some rod together!

working on my Tig now on 6G and I have to say its kicking my butt right now. I know that if i keep at it eventually it will become second nature. learning the puddle and the technique is so instilled in my brain right now that i think about it in my sleep haha. I'm 34 and I've got roughly 6 months of OJT experience between MIG and Flux Core (more MIG than Flux), however the only schooling/training I've had for welding is High School. I took maybe 3-4 semesters of it and that was only for stick welding (dabbled with brazing/ AcetTorch). I started a new job a month ago at a plow company working with Flux core (first time). Honestly, I'm glad I got the basics with stick welding in high school because compared to that, MIG/Flux becomes so easy to do. Welding, even if it is for a job, can both be fun and challenging. For me, at least.

Appreciate your positivity! I’m in the middle of my welding school right now, got another 6 months left of it. I’ve got a lot to learn still. Great advice buddy. I bought a welding business and then apprenticed to become a welder, in Canada it’s a 3 year program where you work for ten months and for two months you take classes in the morning and practice in the afternoon for 3 hours a day. Four years later I’m averaging CA $250K a year.

Great video! Contractors almost always default to the low bid. After two or three attempts to cheap out they learned to invest in experience for the rest of the job because they found experienced men are cheaper in the long run. Unfortunately most contractors will have to learn this lesson repeatedly because of their need to squeeze every penny until President Lincoln cries...

Great experience,I've had some nightmare go behinds,done by so called certified welders,all welds sonic tested 3/4" 10x10,all welds failed,brought in 4 pipe welders,all welds had to be air arced out,cost of a crane,200.00 an hour for welders,poor contractor had to pay 2400.00 a day for 8 day's when he could have hired qualified welders from the start,he said her learned the hard way,but he hired my company for every job after that,good job Austin!

That's exactly why good welders command good wages. They're worth every penny. It's always far more expensive to fix than to hire the right person from the start. You get what you pay for.

Yo, welding in school with pre-positioned setups is gravy, I've been in the field like you, getting yourself up there while balancing on a ladder and putting out a nice weld, that's not stuff they teach in class, you have to be a first class athlete to pull that off and not injuring or buying the farm, well done>

Always like your channel but especially liked your advice this time “just go for it”... I’m getting back to welding after a different career and with everything going down these days it’s been tough! I ate a lot of peanut butter sandwiches to save up for a basic rig, some tools and a good hood. Focusing on the goal and telling doubters to get lost (might have used other words there) is the only way to get it done. Thanks bro.

No. Literally anyone can weld. I started welding last month and I have yet to find something in the range of my welder that I can't weld successfully. The qualifications are just for insurance purpose, the weld will basically be the same regardless of the operator.

@@xl000 something to try i(f in range of your welder) welding with a engine powered stick welder (not in a building but outside) a 1/8th inch thick 4ft x8ft sheet of A36 steel plate to another of the same and join them length wise to make a 8ft x 8ft plate using a 1/8th 7018 electrode and the plate must be flat without ......distortion ......and it will lay flat on a concrete pad. if successful try it with 14 gauge steel and appropriate electrode. also take a 6ft wide x10 ft long x 3/4 inch thick A36 steel plate lying flat and weld a 1/2inch thick 4ft x10ft A36 steel plate lying lengthwise at a 45 degree angle skywards and the weld must be full strength and porous free with no fisheyes using 5/32" 7018 electrode for the root pass and then using a 7/16 " 7024 electrode to fill and finish the weld. the plate must be distortion free within 1/8 of an inch lengthwise and the 45 degree wing plate must not be buckled length wise.and must be straight. 👍

Commercial construction is a much better fit for you than always having to jack around with the never ending stress of taking welding tests for pipe line ! Fence welding for you is just pocket money . Good luck with commercial work , maybe you've found a nitch that's a very good fit for your skill sets !!!!

i go to welding school and it really fun but remember have patience and if the weld keep coming off Bad change your welding angle i have seen lots of people quit welding because they get frustrated on how bad there welds come out but practice is key to being successful in welding i got to South Texas Vo Tech

爪ㄚ丂ㄒ乇尺ㄚ爪卂几 I am in school right now, taking MIG and FCAW at the moment. Getting frustrated with FCAW because my welds are not improving much and my instructor is no help whatsoever. My MIG class, I can actually see every weld I do is better than the last because my instructor is so helpful. I believe that in many things, a student is only as good as his teacher.

6:50 i feel like the explanation in this sentence is a reason why you (Austin) should take a metallurgy class just to understand WHY this actually matters. as opposed to relying on field experience and what you hear from people on the job. youre a damn good worker. i just think a little more knowledge on the way welding effects the material may benefit you and your progress.

My dad was a welder for more than 60 years. He used to not like going over someone else’s mess to fix it. Especially on structural when the previous welder did not pass inspection

@@kadenarvello5648 that's a big osha no no. Supposed to be fiberglass. I have a very similar ladder on my truck personally but have been told to not use it on jobs. They do conduct electricity well too

Nice job Austin. I have been called in to fix three huge jobs just in the past 2 months. At least that is red iron, preengineered buildings suck, they slam em up in 2 weeks and then like you have 2 days to weld everything.....yeah right, prep to remove the dip paint is like one day. For people who don't know, wanna learn to do structural, learn to weld 1/8 thick steel with 7018 3/32 in 4F and learn to control the penetration, this will make other stuff seem simple.

I wonder if that inspector has a collection of pictures of the worst welds he has ever seen. Thinking that omg this has got to be the worst "welding" I have ever seen. Then 3 or 4 jobs later what does he see? Oh I have got to take a pic of this garbage lol. I always wondered what happened if a job was inspected and there was still a dangerous failure. Does that inspector loose his license to inspect ?
