In this video you will learn not only how to EQ bass guitar, but also how to compress bass guitar and add parallel distortion to help the bass cut in your mix! I demonstrate this process using a Digico SD12 with the Waves GTR plugin, but this method can be done with nearly any console. In fact, I first learned this process using an X32!
Examples:
DAW: ProTools, Logic, Studio One, Ableton, etc.
Consoles: Behringer X32/M32, Allen & Heath SQ5, Yamaha CL5/Rivage, AVID S6L, SSL, Digico, etc.

That bass sounded tremendous when you found the mid frequencies to scoop. When you made that deep scoop out of the mids, that bass tone died. You managed to liven it up with that slight high boost and the dirty bass trick. My humble opinion, if were you to keep the mids flat or even a slight 3db boost to the mids, you wouldn't have to take the extra steps of adding a parallel channel with the dirty bass. I agree totally about the low and high pass filters, but the bass tone lives in the mids. Having said that, I think it is important to add context. Rock music or anything with high gain guitar definitely needs the bass mids boosted, or it gets lost in the mix. Other genres of music might not benefit from that aggressive sound. R&B, jazz, country, etc might all benefit from a scooped mids bass, but I would prefer to leave the mids flat instead of scooping.

You're right on point.. I was goin to say same.. it all depends on the genre.. I feel the hp cut is also subjective depending on the type of bass as well

@@joshmcdzz6925exactly. If you're playing a 5 string bass, the low B is about 30Hz, so that HPF needs to come down lower than 30Hz. I guess his advice is good for certain genres.

I watched to the end. Then you mentioned good speakers, which reminded me that I was recording earlier and had my subwoofer turned way down so I wouldn't bother the neighbors too much. Now I've got it turned back up to normal and I need to re-watch this video. Whoops.

A five-string bass low string is about 32Hz in standard tuning. A four-string bas - about 41Hz. For a "heavy" sound, some bass players tune down a half-step or more, i.e., below 40Hz. You can listen to Ale of The Warning playing the song "Z"...if you have the subwoofers. Her sound live is tectonic. She plays in the middle when solo and drops into the low range to open the spectrum for the guitar. Smart arranging! Also, a high pass /low cut filter set to 40Hz is actually attenuated at 40Hz. If you want to hear 40Hz at the same level as, let's say, 100Hz, you need to set the filter lower. Nice use of the distortion channel, by the way! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/osl8qKVj3bLQXWw.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iM52Z7RnscqzaWQ.html

I guess the point here is: "pay attention to the type of bass and the tuning in use". A spectrum analyser could be useful because it'll show you the frequency of the fundamentals and then you won't have to worry about the the type of bass or tuning in use.

The tones I like have high mids in the metallic region. I tend to boost between 1.5k-3k to get them. My GK has a big open hole from 1k-4k, and it’s why I love Darkglass pedals. Even the VMT(which I love) has something special in that area. 1k sounds like cardboard upper mids by comparison. It’s closer to Jack than say Chris Squire, Billy Gould, or Paul D’Amour(I also have the Ric and Mesa like he did).

All the bassists I work with love me and have never complained about me messing with their tone. If you want a mix to actually work together, short of set band members who consistently rehearse together as a full band, there’s basically no way you’re not going to have to adjust tones to make it all sound cohesive. This is live sound with rotating volunteer musicians. I’m just over here trying to survive 😂

@@andrewlepard Haha, I think you're right. I think those who are lucky enough to have a good sound engineer don't mind that. Thanks for the great vids, the drum EQ one was mind blowing. The kick and snare transformation was incredible.

Mixing is subjective. I personally don't like tne bass mix you did ( sounds like a synth bass or some keyboard bass - lifeless ).. but I guess this will work for rock genres. When it comes to gospel, jazz, r&b, neo soul.. this is a No, No!!! for me..
