My Stuart No. 9 just completed (dec. 2020) running on compressed air. I just finished some extras such as the pump air chamber and the flanged globe valve. I made this one from a standard model globe valve from a steam fittings shop, but I thought it wasn’t complicated (and scaled) enough and I took care of it ! Sorry for the airbrush compressor noise, my usual air compressor just failed yesterday !

Wow! Olivier that is a beautiful piece of work! The detail and finish are fabulous...and it is so nice to see the flywheel and pulley running true without wobble. Attention to detail is obvious right down to the length of protrusion of each of the studs. The No. 9 was always considered to be a good looking design and you have honoured that reputation by producing a truly delightful version of the engine. You must be very proud of this model. - John Bentley

Hi John, many thanks for this kind comment. I want to point out that this success is also yours. Indeed, I would never have had the courage or the ability to build this kind of stuff if you hadn’t shared your time and your immense talent with me. I thank the day I came across your website the first time and decided to write to you, thank you so much John you’re a great man.

Gorgeous engine! A great example also of how the reverse stroke is faster when it runs really slow

Flash piece of kit.. Shame you can't isolate the compressor noise.

Vary nice! You know your running the engine backwards? It’s not good to run it in that direction under load.

super looking model. Am interested in the 'steam' inlet valve you have used. Was it something you designed/created or was it purchased?

Hi, both ! I customised a base valve by adding bolted flanges etc. 😉

Hello Olivier. What a brilliant peace of engineering, you have made a fantastic job and it sounds amazing. I'm 3/4 of the way through building the Stuart 10V and really enjoying making it. For my next project I would love to make the Stuart No 9 and struggling to find much information about it, sizes etc. I have a mini mill and a 7 x 14 mini lathe, do you think they would be big enough to make this engine on. Hope you don't mind me asking. Many thanks. Ken.

Hi Ken, many thanks for your kind comments. I have almost the same tools as you and it is a little undersized but I think it could be done with a little imagination in placing the parts !

@@olivadem8972. Thanks so much for your reply and advice Olivier, I'm going to give it a go because I think they are a lovely looking engine when finished. All the best. Ken.

Is it possible to make it work like a stirling engine, by connecting both the inlet and outlet of the engine with a copper heating coil, pressurizing it with air as work fluid, then firing the coil? If you connect both the inlet and outlet of the cylinder and turn the wheel, it will circulate the air around the coil, the air will heat and be allowed to expand inside the cylinder, making it turn, than be pumped back to the coil to restart the cycle. Can it work?

I really don’t know ! But I think there’s too much friction and moving parts are heavy so the pressure generated may be too low IMO

@@olivadem8972 I discovered the name for this. It's called closed Brayton cycle.
