You know that thing you love that's an escape from reality? Well even in that everyone probably still thinks you're a prick.

I feel like EVERY episode of black mirror is using the technology as a means to articulate what’s already inside people. I don’t think there’s a single person in Black Mirror who’s actually changed by the technology, rather than just having what’s already there drawn out of them. With the exception of Metalhead (which I don’t think is a very good episode), technology itself is never an active malevolent presence in the show. There’s always a PERSON behind the tech using it for personal reasons.
@Stubagful
@Stubagful 6 жыл бұрын
yeah, I can see your point, but I'd argue the line's a bit blurrier than that. I mean in the capacity of technology being a feat of the humans behind it sure, but I get more into this in my Arkangel review where I've mostly focused on technological feats actively encouraging people to engage in counterproductive behaviour, behaviour that the people can't help but indulge in owing to a desire inside of them. I'd argue the technology mostly changes people by virtue of its existence, their lives would be totally different if e.g. the ability to have total control over your child's upbringing wasn't there

Fair enough> I'm always hesitant to say that technology (or whatever the "new" factor that allows people to indulge in their worst impulses is) is really to blame for said indulgence, because it sounds a bit too much like absolving people of their own conscious choices and actions.

Playing cooking mama doesn't automatically make me a chef Playing harvest moon doesn't automatically make me a farmer Playing surgery simulator doesn't automatically make me a surgeon So why would playing GTA automatically make me a psychopathic criminal?

To me, this episode's premise seemed less like just a video game and more like what happens when you cheat your way through a really good game. It can be entertaining for a few minutes, but if that's all you do, you end up not getting involved in the story/gameplay and missing out on all the fun. I always think it's great to see when your character isn't the center of everything, it makes the game's world much more believable. I also liked how the crew got to explore the simulated universe in the end. I don't know if it was international, but it was also made possible by the guy who pretty much tortured them indefinitely, showing how great things are often done by (morally) not-so-great people.

I think I prefer Where No Fan Has Gone Before on the grounds that it made it more clear that people who like Star Trek aren't the problem. Fry was a huge fan boy in that episode but could still acknowledge that Melvvvar was taking shit too far. Plus as someone who has seen it prior to and since becoming a Trek fan it's just generally funnier. Definitely more after one gets into Trek cause they were really clever with the plots they were parodying and the lines in general.
@meris8486
@meris8486 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think Where No Fan Has Gone Before was funnier because Futurama is more a strict comedy series. Whereas Callister is one of the only lighthearted stories in the otherwise dark Black Mirror.
@defrostedrobot77
@defrostedrobot77 6 жыл бұрын
while that's true I still think the message was better handled. while the writers of this episode weren't trying to diss Trek it can't help but feel that way because the major fan of it is an asshole and no one else really seems to respect their Trek equivalent that much. Where No Fan Has Gone Before is a real love letter to the franchise while still being critical of some aspects of fandom.

You are not the only one who likes the Waldo Moment. I love Jamie and his characters ark through his seemingly bipolar depression. I love the character drama presented in it and how the the absurd world they live in allows them to portray the narrative to make it interesting. I just love it. Also White Bear is another favourite of mine but I'd need an essay to convey my feelings for White bear

I saw your Black Mirror vid before seeing Waldo so I had some of that in mind when I saw the episode. It definitely feels more relevant in later years given how people will twist anything to suit a political end even when its not remotely suited for that. Overall it's alright but it probably wouldn't rank that high if I was ranking the whole show. Although I would probably have it above Men Against Fire. Still even the weakest Black Mirror at least has something of value.
@Stubagful
@Stubagful 6 жыл бұрын
See I loved men against fire, but its probably cause Katie Hopkins was much more prevalent in the media when it came out and it basically played as a direct response to that controversy from 2015 where she published an article calling migrants cockroaches and said she'd send gunboats after them, set it in that context and it makes a lot more sense

Gotta admit, I read the episode less through the lens of video games and more through the lens of the entitled gatekeeping power trip attitude that some people (and let’s be honest, it’s almost always put upon “Nice Guy” white dudes in their late 20’s/30’s who don’t feel appreciated enough in real life) have toward women and minorities who come into their geeky fandom. Maybe that’s just cause this episode dropped right in the middle of he stupid “Anti-SJW” bullshit that popped back up in the Star Wars fandom after Last Jedi released. Like Daily, all sorts of sad pathetic fanboys got super power-trippy because their favorite sci-fi thing didn’t “belong to them anymore”. It honestly never even occurred to me to think about this episode as addressing video games specifically. If that was the *intended* metaphor I don’t think they’d have leaned so heavily on a Stark Trek homage of all things.
@Stubagful
@Stubagful 6 жыл бұрын
I mostly went off about video game theory because I did a module on it at uni and a bit of my brain clicked and went "oh yeah - this, this and this" - my thinking was that star trek was used because Kirk was always the stereotypical hero type of character, a "sort of guy you would like to pretend to be" - cause y'know how kids in a playground would play as characters off a TV show they saw that week, they'd probably wanna be the cool charismatic space captain - that same pratice fits with the main character in a video game - a guy you'd wanna play as. Buuuut that's just my reading of it and yours is probably more accurate to the inspiration for this episode. Yyyyyeaah while I'm aware of it, I've mostly tried to avoid that loud and shouty corner of youtube. Like people get so defensive when you just criticise a videogame. My girlfriend posted a review of some kid's game from her childhood she bought on steam for nostalgic reasons, it was quite negative, and the shit she got over it was just nuts

I think this scenario was picked for the episode because there's traditionally a big cross-over between these two archetypes - which is sadly backed up with things like 'Gamergate'. The gamer community is often identified with the introvert who gets bullied and indulges in escapism. These are the 'nice guys' who feel they're entitled to things the world is denying them. "Why don't girls like nice guys like me?" - because you're not a nice guy. If Buffy has taught me anything, it's beware of the introverted geek who gains power.

I hate unicorns As someone who would classify themselves as an "introverted geek", this is behavior that I try very hard not to repeat. Overall I've (hopefully) learned to simply be the best human I can be, and let people judge me based on that.

The way I see it is as a shy guy who gets no respect and since he's too socially awkward to stand up for himself decided to vent his frustrations at home in his own fantasy world, like a lot of people does, but instead created a fantasy world, a screwed up way to get that respect and vent for real and developed a god complex. This has nothing to do with gamers directly, just with people who get home from school or work and frustrated and for a second they fantasize about getting back at that bully or getting more respect at work and what would happen if you had that chance for real, Daly got it in horrible way and got drunk with that power, what he did was bad but he didn't deserve to die in my opinion, he just needed help.

A good episode but a bit disappointing. The characters never try to reason with Daily and explain that they are sentient. Are they actually sentient? is there pain real? The show never bothers to address this, the characters are quick to throw out f-bombs cause that's how real people would talk in this situation right? As a result of this, it was hard to care about any of them. This is brought to a head in the airlock scene which was just unintentionally hilarious. Having recently watched Westworld I can see that it executed on the themes and ideas of this episode much better while still finding time to tackle deeper stuff.

Isn't USS Calister slightly different because the characters are sentient beings that he's knowingly harming and controlling? Not only that but copys of real people who know him forced into that situation? I don't see the connection to normal video games, because it's not like I'm taking fellow university students copying them and then putting them into the role of random villagers. I though the horror of that episode is supposed to be at the idea of putting self aware A.I. into anything.

I think that is an important distinction. For instance I'm the opposite type of player from Stu. I like playing the evil bastard because playing paragon tends to be, well boring. I would not do the same in the scenario presented in this episode though. The copies of people just pushes the line of personhood in this almost "Measure of a Man" grey area, I'm just not comfortable with. But some may say, they're not really the people they represent! The catharsis still doesn't actually harm anyone. I don't care. I'm still not comfortable with knowingly torturing a voodoo doll with thoughts, perceives pain, and reacts as one would to that kind of stimulus. It's close enough to where your empathy should kick in and not dismiss it as mere entertainment.

Did you ever watch 'Inside No. 9'? If not I would seriously recommend it, it's a really brilliant anthology program with a great sense of humour. (I would recommend the episode '12 Days of Chirstine' particularly, it's not my favourite, but it is the one with the most Black Mirror-y atmosphere so it's a good entry point for Black Mirror fans)

So this episode is just being all whiny about how video games are violent and brings the worst out of people. Not all video games are violent and there are other things that can bring the worst out of people. An episode of Rick and Morty gave some idiots the idea to act like Sheldon Cooper and harass McDonald employees.

Wait... wait... you don't play video games anymore? ....no words.
@Stubagful
@Stubagful 6 жыл бұрын
keyphrase that changes that sentence - "that much anymore" doesn't mean I don't play any, just my interest has dwindled. Latest game I actually played to completion was Alien Isolation, that was pretty good. I still play the odd experimental indie thing here and there, played the Stanley Parable not that long ago, that was hilarious. Yeah I trace my waning enthusiasm with modern video games back Resident Evil 5. I just got about halfway through and just thought "isn't this basically just the last one but not as good?" then I was told that 6 was even worse and didn't bother, more bad gaming choices like Bioshock 2 (though I did play infinite which was a lot better, but I really reeeeally hated Bioshock 2), Dead space 2, I just started feeling like I was chucking massive stacks of money into a fire. idk, I just got the feeling the major game publishers were creatively stagnating and I got bored and lost interest. Then I played Metroid Other M which is the worst game I've ever played...that was the straw that broke the camel's back and the gamer in me died....seriously as a huge fan of Metroid, it was like having barbed wire dragged across your brain
@Pcwarmachine
@Pcwarmachine 6 жыл бұрын
Ahh... yeah I can see if you are in that genre of games how it became a bit stale. There is a new first person game called "Hunt: Showdown". I haven't played it but just saw a video on it and it looks pretty damn creepy. I believe it's only in closed Alpha testing atm, but it looks pretty near ready to release.
@Stubagful
@Stubagful 6 жыл бұрын
yeah my problem is I'm a story guy and if a game's story isn't that strong then I'm very, very hard to please. I've found that games I actually find interesting these days are commonly referred to by gamers as "walking simulators" which is kind of an appropriate summation of my relationship with the state of modern video games - I want a compelling story but a large majority of gamers come to games for other reasons, so games I find interesting with good stories get the "walking simulator" descriptor and companies have less reason to put out games with interesting stories. I've just grown so detached from it in recent years
@Pcwarmachine
@Pcwarmachine 6 жыл бұрын
Game developers are getting a bit lazy on the story aspect to be sure. I think in recent years the influx of so many console gamers has shifted games away from the days of a game like Myst for example and more towards typical jump and climb type games. Definitely not my preference either. Still there is the stand out game now and again that has a really in-depth story.
@Stubagful

Yeah like it doesn't even have to be that complicated a story, it just needs to have something that hooks me. Oh yeah I also liked Limbo and Inside from Playdead, both had rubbish endings but they were pretty good and I'm really looking forward to this thing I saw advertised on steam called memory of a broken dimension

This whole 'NPCs have lives too' thing is just gallingly pretentious. No, no NPC will ever have a life because they are programmed exclusively to obey a series of functions. They are robots. Further programming would make no sense from a financial perspective as well as any other. Also most games actually go out of their way to NOT allow you to negatively interact with NPCs. You can't kill children in most games (if they exist) you can't kill or harm plot important NPCs so all of this is like an old man snarling 'You kids an yer violent video games!' Laughable.
