Hello ladies and gentlemen; we were called out to stucco over this concrete retaining wall to help remove most of the form board lines and other imperfections.
We spread a hydraulic plaster called Eisenwall to give the color tan to these exterior walls.
I am explaining the thickness necessary so that when it rains and saturates the walls, almost all of the imperfections in this concrete wall will no longer be visible.
Also, there’s no need to attach any stucco lath or nettings, as this concrete wall is porous.
For example, red bricks are porous. When it rains, they darken when wet as they absorb the rainwater; when the dryer condition returns, the brick dries again to its natural color.
Stucco adheres best to clean porous substrates like concrete walls by a mechanical bond; that’s where two substrates bond together.
Like the existing cement retaining wall in this video is moist or wet, by a garden hose and the new stucco, which is also naturally wet aboard into one, this is proven by the test to time to be the strongest bond known to man.

@@StuccoPlastering I’m having an issues stuccoing a concrete wall. After about 90 mins I noticed about 25-30 bubbles blistering under the type s I used. I prepped the wall as normal with my pressure washer and I soaked it down really well and I added a few cups of lime to each 80lb bag of premix type s (just add water type). I even used some quikrete bonding agent and Lehigh type s with a little extra lime on another wall and the same thing no happened . Any ideas? I’m not sure if I soaked the wall too much or what it is.. after the stucco dries those blisters split open and now I have to patch them all. The other thingg to note is that it’s s brand new house about 4-5 month old concrete foundation about 8 feet tall on the back of the house. 3’ on front. Would the newer concrete walls create an issue like that? appreciate your help and I watch all your vids.I’m a brick mason but not an everyday stucco guy as I’m in the northeast in Massachusetts and it’s not super prevalent out here.

Howdy Eric, two ways to guarantee brown or skim coat bubbling. If the walls are too wet, plus when the stucco was applied, there was not enough pressure when you troweled it on. This causes the plaster to sag or not adhere. Then when you hit it with a darby, the trapped air creates the bubbles. However, the good news is when you get this bubbling going on, leave it alone for a while, the weather dictates how long. Then hard rubber float the wall with either a hard rubber or polyurethane float. This compresses the stucco pushing the excess air out. Naturally, you applied the bonding agent to the wall and not in the mix? If necessary, type in how to hard rubber float a wall on our channel.💃🏻

@@StuccoPlastering thanks for the advise I really appreciate it. I’ve stuccod foundations before and never had an issue like this. It’s almost like quarter sized bubbles start appearing everywhere after about an hour. I was thinking maybe the newer concrete foundation was releasing gas or something lol. And I applied the paint on quikrete binding agent and after seeing the bubbling I went to my local masonry yard and picked up the best bonding agent they had because they didn’t carry weldcrete which I wanted. The same issue still occurred. Both products I applied and let dry for a few hours and I even tried to put some k88 acrylic admix into the mix which just makes it a bit stickier and workable. I tried it with and without that admixture same issue. Do you normally apply bonding agents on to your concrete walls before you stucco or only under special circumstances? I will definitely try the hard rubber float technique. Lastly, if you applied bonding agents what is the water protocol ? Do you still mist the walls over the weldcrete ? Do you mist before applying weldcrete ? The quikrete bonding agent just says to apply and let dry before applying your stucco.

The cracks are not stress cracks from pressure of the backfill. They are shrinkage cracks caused when the concrete cured. The wall has insufficient control joints, so cracking was inevitable. Same principle applies with any concrete structure.

Thanks Kirk I refinish recap concrete as part of my trades. I ve been literally pacing the floors because a customer approached us when we were working at her home. She was around us quite a bit. She texted me after work she is covid positive. That's another story and I pray for her and my crew. Needless to say I am anxious and can't work until my crew and me get our tests results to clear to go back to work. I started watching trades videos and landed on your family's videos. It calmed me and lifted my spirits I too like my trades and my family of brothers I get to work with. Thank you for sharing and God bless your family and crews Charlie Van Winkle

Evening Charlie, my brother, thank you. A homeowner with covid hangs around you all day, then texts you after you're done for the day with this news. 🤷😡 I wouldn't worry over it, be aware and concerned, sure. We're cement men. Our lungs are so full of other toxins there no room for covid.😏 Seriously, if you strong enough to do cement work, you more than likely have a healthy immune system. Your healthy red blood cell should grab/handcuff the covid virus and takes the germs directly to the colin to be sent to the sewer where it belongs.🤔 Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. I figure you already know, just encouraging you to not be afraid to add an additional ad somewhere in the middle of a 20 min video. In a way it can break a video up, which can be a good thing. I am use to seeing the ads in videos and I like the idea that you have the potential to earn more income when I view an ad. Either way, keep up the good work! Hi Kirk and family ,i have just a couple of things i have learned from 30 years of construction is that when you work with concrete you have to control the curing time so it don't cure to quick because if it cures too quick it will crack due to shrinkage ,so we have to maintain a certain amount of moisture content until it is cured (from green stage to cured) and when i was an apprentice bricklayer i was told not too mix the mortar (mud) to long because it would introduce too much air into the mixture compromising the strength ,i really enjoy watching your videos i love to learn more about the use of materials and the method of application, keep em coming :)

Great video. You make it so matter-of-fact and doable for everyone. You are so right, drainage is really the most important part of retaining wall construction. It's importance can not be stressed! No matter how you engineer the wall, you are betting on overturing failure or slippage. I recommend something like Keystone blocks. If it fails all you have is some dirt, stone, geotextile and blocks to pick up as opposed to a full on concrete wall, footing demolition and rebuild. I'm sure I'll get hell for this, but to each his own. Again, kudos on the video. Enjoy.

Kirk try rendering ( applying mud ) from right to left (left to right for southpaws). What we call "Setting" ( think you call it veneer, skimming ...)left to right. When rendering you will always be pulling into your previous render, basically reducing the amount dropping onto the floor considerably. I weep when i see the render falling on the floor. Howdy Soup in a basket me fellow plasterer, I hate to say it but I have had to let guys go who had the habit of dropping more mud than they could apply, I used to scream sounds like cows shitting on flat rocks, man that makes for a long day as I also do clean up and nothing worse that having to pick up plaster from journeymen who haven't learned how to keep the mud or muck on the walls. On a radius I can understand dropping some mud as the trowel is used diagonally but on flat wall where a trowel is used horizontally there's no excuse for dropping mud. Aloha Fixit, fair enough, so in other words when a client tells you he wants a hand-troweled old world stucco finish, you say, no? But instead, give him a modern day wall straight and perfect. These finishes are okay if your around 20 to 30, but some folks have different tastes and find this finish to be an expression to scream out to the world, "I am wealthy," while this is okay, often mature clients desire shadows and variations in color for a more charming effect. Howdy dude born a year before me. There are no products I'm aware of that will stop a wall or slab from moving in the long run, Not Rapid set's "cement all" which has a strength of (9,000 PSI) when set, almost 3 times as strong as cement, nor La Habra's "Polybond which is great for sticking to anything cementitious, or any caulking, or even top quality epoxcy. I tell folks if a hundred ton wall is going to move, nothing will stop this action. Live long and plaster Sharing plastering information, as the world can use more teachers.

Thank you for this video. Extremely knowledgeable. I am an Engineer working on a similar project where the existing stucco has begun to peel away. Once we have the existing stucco pressure washed off, would you recommend installing a new bonding agent? Also, my project is located in an salt air environment. Would any of the cement/stucco requirements change because of the corrosive environment?
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 5 жыл бұрын
Good afternoon Michael, If your in a cold climate or by the sea which is salty. I would emphasize, top of the line pressure washing with much force, then apply a proper bonding agent and plaster as normal. no stucco or bonding agent will stay on for hundreds of years if the bond is not the best possible under all conditions. Does Rapid Set FIBER or another fiberglass admix work well for preventing those hairline cracks from forming? I found removing all soil and digging down to bedrock or at least a 'false bedrock' layer when building the wall is pretty effective, but that's clearly not practical everywhere.
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 жыл бұрын
Howdy 3 Alame Dude, we applied the strongest plaster that is sold in America, but this will not stop this wall from moving if it pushed in the opposite direction for months at a time by the weight of hundreds of tons of rain water, It will perhaps move only as much of an eighth of an inch, buht when drier conditions return, Thus Voila a hairline crack may occur which BTW, is not the end of the world. This wall did indeed have a french drain system installed and was engineered to the max, however nature does not care about these facts. Best wishes with your projects, live long and Plaster Kirk giordano on teaching plastering
