Stucco over these CMU blocks by hydrating the CMU blocks before stucco applications.
Pressure washing is necessary for good bonding.
Scratch coats are unnecessary for cementitious walls, including brick, Old cinder blocks, CMU, Cement Blocks, Terra Cotta walls, or cementitious substations.
Keep in mind a Scratch Coat is 3/8 of an inch thick, whereas a skimcoat is at least one-half inch or more. This minor 1/8 difference makes a big difference.
If going over Cement Blocks, you apply less than 1/2 inch, what happens?
Excellent question; I'm glad you asked.Nothing.
Except when it rains, you will possibly notice the grout lines.
I am explaining the thickness necessary so that the grout lines won’t show through when it rains and saturates the walls.
If you’re going to paint your new stuccoed CMU block walls, no worries about the thickness, as even if they are wet, if painted, the grout line still won’t bleed or ghost through.
Also, there’s no need to attach any metal lath of any kind to Bricks, CMU blocks, cinderblocks, concrete, or porous foundations,
For example, red bricks are porous. When it rains, they darken when wet, then when dryer condition returns, the brick dries once more to its natural color.
Stucco adheres best to really clean porous cinderblock or concrete walls by what’s called a mechanical bond.
With a mechanical bond to cementitious porous substrates, nothing can separate them.
I’m talking strong, not as strong as a parent’s love for their kids, but a close second.
FYI, both stucco and concrete are made with Portland cement; one has sanded the other rocks.

In Ireland we use a do a bit different we scud the brick first then scratch coat 4/1 ratio sand cement then finish coat using 4/1 add some lime. We wet the scratch coat before we apply the finish and put it on screed it fill in the holes, let it dry then float it then either steel trowell or give it a sponge finish with a regular sponge. Like your videos man keep up the good work 👍

Good evening Thunder Aquatics. Man, I Sho-Nuff like your style. In fact, I like it s'ooooo much. I'll do the homework for you to save you at least 40 hours of searching.😉 As your home is large, I would advise don't even think about using any pre-bagged stucco that just needs water. That will cost you a fortune and take much too long. I'd order a couple yards of sand deliver and at least thirty bags of either Hansons Lehigh premium cement plaster or 15 bags of plastic cement with 15 bags of common cement plaster. This means that I click below to watch the three videos I have personally hand-picked for you, my ambitious brother. For every bag, you add three-time the sand. Mix with a towable mixer, not the barrel type. Actually, hire either a plasterer or hod carrier or both to assist/help you, don't try to skim coat an entire home yourself. "Trust me on this advice."😏 Instead, go on Craiglist and place an ad to hire an experienced plasterer/hod carrier, or you will hate life while skim coating an entire house. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sMlipaug1cWsd40.html/ Cement plasters most used by professional plasterers, Hanson's Leighigh premium cement plaster kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fa5ymthkvs6Vm4U.html/ Choosing the right stucco/cement plaster for your home, you do have choices depending on needs kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gdaPoK2ezJfUY4E.html/ Sand to cement ratio in Stucco, Portland plaster and sand mix Note: to all subscribers or anyone who stumbles on our channel with a question, type it into our Stucco/Plastering channel, and like magic, a video will appear to explain how it's done. Morning Beast dude, from the UK. Not sure of your meaning. Do I hard rubber float my brown coat, If so often, when the project calls for it. Do I try and mix the sand and cement as I am applying, or rendering it, never. Lastly after my cement plaster is mixed do I use a float to apply or as you folks in the UK say, render it on the walls, I have done this a time or two but it's easier for me to render mud up with me trowel. Love your videos Kirk you are a man of talent, great attitude, and work ethic. I'm a jack of all trades and have a basement with cinder block walls which were painted (thick stuf) but have peeling paint and white powder coming through (potassium nitrate?) and some areas have black which I guess is mold. So it is one ugly basement. I guess the best approach is to dig up the outside and spread some tar and perhaps add drainage. But for the inside, do you think I could put a plaster finish over it? Would mold soak through? I know you use a gas powered pressure washer, could I clean the wall with acid (muriatic?) instead? Are the blocks perhaps beyond help? thank you!

Good evening Rob, if it were me, and you can't pressure wash the inside, wear a mask and wire brush the walls well, this takes forever, then wash with water to clean off duct, now your ready to paint or apply a stucco finish. Kirk, I'm having trouble getting the stucco to stick to the CMU 2' tall 20' long wall that has a poured cap. I did the back side first and am looking for a smooth finish :(. I put 50/50 weld cret & water first, and am using green core from HD. Is there an additive that I can use to increase the adhesive properties? Maybe I didn't go thick enough on the back side, because I went to float it and in some areas it just came off. Thank you, and love your channel.

Evening Trevor, your wall might be either hot as in the sun, or dusty or not hydrated properly. FYI, With a bonding agent, the only time you dilute it is to apply stucco color finishes over painted surfaces. Try misting the wall with water, not dripping wet but misting so the new stucco absorbs into the moist CMU walls. 😉

Hi guys! Been watching a ton of your videos to try and figure out my albatross... 200'x6' cinder block wall (both sides) that has those "floral" design type of blocks near the top row for "looks" that I will need to fill in before coating. I wanted to try a skim coat but I'll need some sort of lath to hide those goofy floral blocks. Also there are columns every 8' or so, square and have a 1" reveal greater than the wall. Both higher by an 1" an poking out of the wall 1". How can I skim this! No $$, I don't know the proper mix design and never stucco'd!! Not all hope is lost, I'm a contractor. But always subbed stucco type work ( they've always SUCKED compared to you guys!!) Lots of concrete work (flatwork, structual, countertops & sinks) so I'm kinda with ya on terminology.... Best plan of attack, mix design and I'll work on my technique! "OK guys"!! Thanks!! Patrick

HI Patrick Drury, thank you, you may not have to lath the Floral designs you are referring to. Send me a picture to kirk4stucco@gmail.com I'll let you know the simplest way to cover those decorative area's. Best wishes, Kirk and family

Hey Patrick, I recieved the picture, easy solution. If it were me after the pressure washing has dried, I would simply spread over the designs with a thick mud, just the top block and fill the holes on both sides, The next day skim coat as usual. If you apply the mesh it would have little benefit except save you 5 dollars in mud while spending 100 dollars in lath and 6 hours in time to attach the mesh to the blocks. When I say stiff mud I mean it has to be thick enough to fill the holes without sliding or falling out. Going to make a stucco dude out of you yet. Best wishes, kirk and family

Hey Gee, yes, we pressure washed the heck out of this wall, In this video I say click here to see the prep work, but Jason just uploaded this video and has not yet had the time to add that feature to this video, However if you type in the words "DIY Pressure or power Washing Tips And Techniques" you will see the necessary prep work for this wall. Cheers! Kirk and family
