Stuck Between Ukraine and Hungary: Life in Transcarpathia

5 жыл бұрынBEREHOVE, Ukraine - Dmytro Korbynskyi, a historian and social activist, moved from the cosmopolitan capital of Ukraine Kyiv to the small western town near the border with Hungary Berehove ten years ago. Berehove reminds Korbynskyi of Podil, a district in Kyiv where he grew up: it’s just as green, cozy and picturesque. However, recently Berehove has been making headlines for quite different reasons.
In late September, a scandal erupted when footage emerged of the local consulate distributing Hungarian passports in Berehove. The video showed the new Hungarian citizens, who were also Ukrainian citizens, singing the Hungarian anthem and taking an oath of allegiance to the state. Kyiv has since expelled the Hungarian consul from the town.

Hungarians are not Europeans by their roots, they came from Asia and took land from the Kingdom of Moravia.

It is also important to know that you travelled on horseback for several days and did not meet anyone, because even in the 16th century there were only 3 million people living in the territory of present-day Hungary at the time of the Hungarian kingdom. So how many do you think there were in the Middle Ages in the 9th century? There is no source where it is written that we took anything by war.

Hungarians came from Asia, they are not Europeans. They are related to the Chuvashi tribe somewhere behind the Ural mountains.

Although my surname is through marriage to a Spaniard, both my parents were Hungarian. My mother, Ujhelyi Zsuzsanna, was born in Dunabogdany. Her family, of noble heritage, was from Tiszaujhely, ( Novo Selo) now in the Ukraine. I love history and am researching more about my lineage and the history of this region.

Thank you very much for covering this. From people within Hungary, (friends,family) you mostly get very negative opinions of the situation in Transcarpathia and here in the west, anything about Ukraine is generally very positive because of the war right now. I'm planning to travel to Transcarpathia soon (and possibly Kyiv too) to learn as much about the situation as possible.

I was there last week. The residents are serving refugees from other parts of Ukraine. The spirit of cooperation & solidarity is strong!

Ukrainian is a fake nation, western and central part of Ukraine were Rus, eastern part of Ukraine were Hungary and Polish. Even, there was a Kievan Rus but not a Kievan Ukrainian. The ethnic Ukrainian is just an ethnolinguistic group who speak the language called Ukrainian (a continuum of Russian within Old East Slavic language without massive loanword taking from German or French), basically they are also Rus historically and genetically
