I just repaired one of those a week ago. It was fun. The handle broke. The actuator burnt out. The cable was rusted. I was walking tall when I fixed it.

Sir that is some real good narrative and excellent description!! I bought a used 2003 sequoia and its gate was "sticking" o had to do the bump on the gate as pull the handle to open then the handle broke a week later. That was replaced with the all metal then the cable plastic insert broke, that was rigged to work, now the latch is stuck...lol domino effect going on here....was worried I'd have to do the hack saw thing...luckily I came across this...will try soon and let you know!! Thanks and keep on doing the damned thing brother!!

Just followed your advice. If your latch is really stuck and the trunk latch is struggling to unlock, push on the trunk hard from the outside while pushing the unlock button. Also fill the entire mechanism with wd40 before trying to unlock. That did the trick for me.

I had the same problem, replaced the latch, handle, and cable, now opens by using the pressure from only one finger!

Hey what's up man thanks for the video so I was taking it apart from the inside. I got it unlock but now it won't open the door. The latch is on the unlock position. I tried pulling the wire put the door won't open?? What should I do

Glad I could help. It could be a failed lock actuator/latch assembly. I have had to cut a striker plate before to get one of those open. They're not too expensive, but it's time consuming and hard to do clean without damaging paint in the door hatch jamb.

u still around? I am replacing my bottom latch(the part with the actuator)...I also bought a new actuator. My latch had gotten stuck in the lock position or just stiff. Anyway..I was wondering before I put it all back in...can i leave the actuator unplugged? meaning I don't really care if my key FOB locks the back...maybe i could do it manually? or does the key activate the actuator..

Mine is stuck solid. Fed a cord with a slip knot down over the cable end next to handle and even though I pulled for all it was worth the latch remained closed so still unable to open the hatch. Have the parts on order to include new handle and latch. Will strip down from the inside to hopefully manipulate the cable better as to be able to open but not too hopeful, figuring the latch mechanism is seized.

Robb, not the first time I removed the back panels to fix the cable. This time, the lock is stuck. I am unable to open the door!!!! I pull the cable with pliers and no go. I saw on another channel that you have to cut the lock!. I have hopes for something easier, were you able to open it? I am stuck at this point of the video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gqemZ5texLXKgWg.html . I can hear the click but unable to open.

@@jumacaos In the end I took off inner panels to hatch. I pulled on the cable and got lucky it opened the hatch. Noticed lock very rusty. Replaced the handle and lock. Everything fine now and working OK. I suppose you could remove your inner hatch panel and maybe spray a load of PB Blaster from the top/inside and let it soak overnight. Also when you pull on the cable get someone to push down on hatch from the outside at the same time as I've noticed there is a very tight clearance between latch and lock. If that fails then you could use a Dremmel to cut away part of the plastic lock shroud from the inside to provide better access to try and manipulate lock to open. Good luck.

I replaced the locking lever rod peice with a steel bolt and nut so it wont ever fall down in the locked part of that lever and just left those 2 wires unplugged so I save 150 bucks and if I lock my keys the car the trunk is always open lol

I need to work in mine also. How about adding an emergency by-pass to manually unlock and avoid this hassle in the future and more specifically on sequoias that are currently working properly before this happens??? Please make a video if you find a way to do this. Thanks.

I've thought about it. Best thing is to keep them clean. Keep the salt water and the grit out. What I thought about doing was adding an escape handle and cable like most trunks have now.

I've thought about it myself....when I used to do alarm work in cars and some have shaved door handles. Add a dead battery to an alarm that is supposed to make npise and flash lights when your car is messed with while you're at work..... A hidden bicycle brake cable in a spot that is easily accessible...yet very invisible to the inquisitive car thief...and you can get your car to open up with some help. Some mechanisms are more challenging than others. You can either tack onto the metal latch itself OR you can use a device that would come with actuators that turn manual locks into remote locks.. It's kinda like a piggy back to a rod that moves back and forth with set screws to hold the new rod next to the old rod. This may be a lot easier shown than spoke...😇😎😀

My problem turned out to be a very dirty sticky latch. I sprayed some penetrating fluid up under and, voila, it opened no problem...
