Amazing picture clarity, hard to imagine that this was shot on a 35mm movie camera - I agree with Abhisek and Siddhartha.....the politics of the 70s ruined Calcutta....the city was at the time the financial capital of India and completely lost out to other states bringing decades of misery and heartache.

No. Naxal movement did not destroy Calcutta. It was the partition and later the attitude of the Government towards the refugees that resulted into outrage. Secondly, freight equalization policy destroyed the prospect of Bengal. Get some education before making stupid comments.

I just wanna ask you , that what is your notion of development?Is the only criteria inorder for a country to develop is it's GDP?Then I guess USA would have been the best country in the world, but then again, what about the thousands of people beside those sky scrapers who are homeless. Charlie Chaplin once said during the period of the great depression that if 5 million people are unemployed in the richest country of the world then something must be wrong in the system.

*_HOW WEST BENGAL WAS DESTROYED_* West Bengal has been on a decline ever since 1963, when Chief Minister of the state Bidhan Chandra Roy passed away. He reinforced the foundations of the state after partition of 1947, got the Durgapur & Alloy Steel Plant, Chittaranjan Locomotives, India’s 1st Satellite Town in Kalyani, Digha Beach Resort, expanded the engineering industries, set up engineering, technology, medical, management and other institutes. Calcutta and Jadavpur used to be the prime universities in India those days. West Bengal had the IIM, IIT, Indian Statistical Institute, the Operations Research School, Bengal Engineering College, besides, of course, Presidency College, SXC, Scottish Church and many other venerable institutes. It was the HQ of Birla, JK, Bangur, and Thapar and Tata. The Grand Tata Centre was built for that purpose. This was the vision of TATAS. Most of their investment was in Jamshedpur. Most foreign companies had their India HQs in Calcutta. This was the reason Calcutta has best of the Clubs in the country. It had the highest number of International flights, Bombay used to serve mainly Aden, Muscat, and East Africa. And then ‘Ashok Kumar Nite’ happened in February 1968. Women were dragged out and their naked dead raped bodies were found in and around the lake over the next two days. The CPM leaders (Jyoti Basu & Co) called it “The Rise of The Proletariat against the Bourgeoisie” and justified it. Calcutta started emptying. Soon after, Aditya Birla was dragged out of his car between GPO & RBI, opposite Writers Building, thrashed, clothes torn, stripped down to his undergarments and made to walk like that to his office at 15 India Exchange Place. With a crowd roaring in laughter and jeering, he went home and took a flight to Bombay, never to return. He took all his money and offices out of Bengal. Today they are one of the top industrial houses in the country. So did JK, so did Thapar, within a month. So did most entrepreneurs, so did most MNCs. Latest example was ousting of Tata Nano. Those were ‘Mass Exodus’ of money and employment from the state. Today no Industrial house plans to start any project in the state. That, this being the dream that the Communists wanted, and there is no change by the present government too. Communists in West Bengal started their political power capturing from ‘Ashok Kumar Nite’ in 1968 and went through ‘Sain Bari killings’ in 1970, ‘Marichjhapi massacre’ in 1979, ‘Bijon Setu massacre’ of 1982 to ‘Bantala gang rape’ of 1990, ‘Nanoor massacre’ of 2000 and ‘Nandigram massacre’ of 2007. They destroyed the work culture and closed down thousands of factories in West Bengal in the name of violent Trade Union and Co-ordination Committee. Presently, the state has been infected with culture of ‘Cut Money’, ‘Syndicate’, Para-teachers, Civic Volunteers and migration of lakhs of labourers to other states. Those educated ones, who could not cope up with destruction of West Bengal migrated out to other parts of India; to other countries. One finds so many teachers, scientists, researchers, doctors, economists, artists, from West Bengal in the US, UK, France, Germany, Benelux, Scandinavia, but none worth the name here in Bengal. It was a ‘Mass Exodus’ of brains. The people of West Bengal have been strangely watching this downhill journey of the state for five decades and will do so unfortunately for another five decades. Just keep your fingers crossed.” PS : Number of beggars per hundred thousand population is highest (89) in West Bengal at present. This is the bottom line. Apart from what has been written, Calcutta was once the head quarter of the State Bank of India, had headquarters of several banks. Even TATA group was planning to move it's corporate headquarters in the historic Tata Centre on Chowringhee. It had the largest ordnance factories at Cossipore and Ichhapur at the outskirts of the city. It had, perhaps the most versatile film, theatre and music industries. Literature was at its best and it was often told that every household in Calcutta had at least one poet, writer, singer, dancer or sportsman. Such was the cultural outreach in every nook and corner of the city and the state. Sports, especially, football, hockey, tennis and athelatics were at their peak. Great Olympians in football and hockey were regularly donning club colours in Calcutta League, Beighton Cup and IFA shield etc. The list goes on. We have seen it peak in our lifetime and seen it rapidly disintegrate too in a span fifty years. Once the Presidency College, the hallowed institution of the East, was the alma mater of India's most intelligent and creative minds and personalities since British reign. Everything is gone now. Everything. It now seems a distant dream. That's the most disappointing truth in the life of every Bengali. They say you can take a Bengali out of Calcutta but you can't take Calcutta out of a Bengali. So, this allround degeneration hurts, really hurts !

As swami vivekananda said what is good for others may be poison for us. Chinese as a race is very hardworking. They can succeed under any ideology. Apply the same on lazy Indians, nothing good comes out of it. It is always better to progress on Indic, dharmic lines rather than applying a foreign idelology hoping it succeeds here. As they say "doesn't matter the idelology, they're cut from the same cloth".

That was a different era my friend. You are saying about industrialization, just read the history about the post independent calcutta.. Calcutta has swallowed the violent partion, the roads were filled with refugees, then in the 60's and 70's naxalite movements begun, then in the name of naxal killings many innocent students were killed by the next Congress govt. So, is it true that this revolutions and naxals were responsible for the demolition of industries?. the industrial problems were much more older brother. Then just watching one video clip you have discovered in your mind that your last generation most of whom are communists are brainwashed? that means almost the whole generation was foolish, waiting to wash their brains by others? There were other political parties there, lot of anticommunist parties, why could have not they washed their brain? Net result is Bengal suffered due naxals & ultra left ideology , Bengal went back by 20 yrs. Work culture in Bengal got bad to worst. People were promoted to spend time on non productive activities. Net result we see today. Now Bengal is a successful full state can you please tell how many Big industries Bengal got after 2011 how much they have improved in Farming sector , what about loans it is (69.8B USD) now but in 2011 it was 23B USD . Punjab was also partitioned along with bengal, you see today where Punjab stands & where Bengal stands. Freight equalization applied to whole of India but why did only Bengal complain. Gujrat / Maharashtra did not complain. Terrorist type Naxal movement, killing of innocent people gave bengal bad name. Now when most of the people working in software sector in Rajarhat/Newtown dreams of going to US onsite on one hand , they cannot be leftist hypocrite on ther hand. My father has to leave bengal in 80s because there was no future or job opportunity in Bengal , he retired as Chief General Manager /ED from Maharatna PSU (outside Bengal). Most of my successful relatives all are settled out side Bengal or abroad. Let us bury our communist / Leftist past & be more pragmatic in our thinking & approach.
