About 3 years after my husband died, (he was from Morocco) I started a new job and met one of my coworkers who was in & out of my workplace during the day. We started chatting and my being a widow came up. She asked about my husband and when she found out that he died from Sickle Cell, she made a comment about how she didn't have a problem with interracial marriages (I didn't ask) but we shouldn't have children because other kids could be so cruel. I simply told her that a better solution would be for her to stop teaching her kids that there's something wrong with my kids. I don't know if she ever changed her mind, but she absolutely chewed on that for a day or two, because she came back and apologized and said she'd never thought of it that way before. Still wouldn't have her in my house though.

Granted the young lady who wrote this was ignorant. I would hope to see other essay assignments that represented other races. Was there an assignment for Native American's, Irish immigrants, Hispanic's, Asian's? If there were not, other similar assignments, this causes resentment among those whose race was not included. Black history month is a joke. Oh, yes start screaming now, because of what I just wrote. By having a month dedicated to one race, then the other 11 need to be dedicated to other races. By segregating the races this just breeds more hatred, but I believe that may very well be the entire purpose. Now, I would like to know if this was a school assignment, why was her school work made public? Unless she gave permission, I think, if this is a real essay from a real student she may have the right to a lawsuit against the teacher and school system for making her school work public... There's a fine line where someone should know that their mindset isn't based off of good morals, KNOWLEDGE, and truth. The issue is, they dont WANT to know. Also, with the way the Caucasian agenda is pushed around the WORLD, it's easy for parents to teach their kids about this "White Narrative" of Caucasian folk being smarter, more innovative, and more civilized. Everything in these damn books, movies, and documents pretty much credits Caucasian folk for every damn thing in this world. Bernard Gray You don't have to be raised a certain way to think the way you do. It plays a huge factor, but at the end of the day it's still up to the person. I know a guy at my old school who grew up in a interracial home, yet he talks down on afro women so badly. AND HIS MOM IS AFRO-DESCENT. How do you explain that? Had to be his peers. A parent sets the base, but a kids peers is who actually shapes their mindset. That's where the saying, "You are who you hang around" comes into play. I don't care if you're a Caucasian boy who grew up in a House with MLK and Angela Davis, if you hang around a bunch of folk who are ignorant and apathetic towards black issues and racist towards afro folk, That's what you're going to become. I appreciate your comment. I think black people are just about the only race that gives all people the 'benefit of the doubt'. We tend not to judge on sight - until proven wrong. However, if you truly have black friends, then you must know that race will NEVER be irrelevant. We are meant to see, and be proud of, our different colors. Try having that conversation with your black 'friends'.
